Light blinking, motor cutting out or no grounds? The fixes from SMEG's own CGF01 and CGF02 manuals, including the reset and the burr check after cleaning.
SMEG Coffee Grinder Not Working? 5 Fixes (CGF01, CGF02)
A Blinking SMEG Grinder Is Usually a Seating Problem
When a SMEG coffee grinder (CGF01 or CGF02) won't start and the light round the START/STOP button blinks, the bean container isn't seated. SMEG's manuals give that blinking light exactly one meaning: "beans container not present or not inserted correctly." Lift the container off, line up the notches on the left of the motor body, and turn it clockwise until the marks meet.
Neither grinder has a screen or numbered error codes, so there's no "E" code to look up. Everything else the manuals list comes down to four things: a motor that has cut out to protect itself, a burr that's blocked or missing, empty beans, or worn burrs. The first three are yours to fix. The last one is a service-centre job.
The two models share a body but not every detail. The CGF01 is the all-rounder, with programs from a single espresso up to 12 cups and a FINE to COARSE lever. The CGF02 is SMEG's espresso grinder, with single, double and manual programs, a SUPERFINE to MEDIUM lever, a portafilter fork and a 58 mm dosing ring. Where they differ for a fix, it's flagged below. If your grinder is built into a SMEG bean-to-cup machine, this isn't your page: the BCC02 has its own alarm lights, covered in our SMEG bean-to-cup warning lights guide.
Try This First
- Press START/STOP once. Both grinders go to stand-by after 90 seconds unused, and START/STOP wakes them. A grinder that "died" between doses is usually just asleep.
- Look at the light when you press it. Blinking means the bean container isn't seated (Fix 1).
- Check the plug and the outlet. "Plug not connected" is the first row in SMEG's table. The manual asks for a properly earthed outlet rated at least 10 A.
- Think about the last few minutes. If it stopped after a long manual grind, the motor protection has tripped (Fix 2).
- Look into the bean container. Beans that have stopped falling into the burrs give a running motor and no grounds.
What Your Grinder Is Telling You
| What you notice | Most likely cause | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Light round START/STOP blinks; won't grind | Bean container not seated | Fix 1 |
| Stopped mid-grind, or dead after a long grind | Motor thermal protection | Fix 2 |
| Motor runs, no ground coffee comes out | No beans, or the grinder is blocked | Fix 3 |
| Grind setting does nothing, or grinds unevenly | Upper burr missing or not locked | Fix 4 |
| Doses suddenly too big or too small | Program amounts were changed | Fix 5 |
| Grind still wrong with the burr fitted | Worn burrs | When DIY Won't Work |
Fix 1: Reseat the Bean Container (Works About 40% of the Time)
The bean container locks onto the motor base with a quarter turn, and the grinder refuses to run until it's locked. SMEG files this under two problems in its table: "The appliance does not work" and "The Led on the knob blinks". A container that's been lifted off for cleaning and dropped back on without the turn is the usual cause.
Signs it's this one: the light round START/STOP blinks when you press it, and the motor doesn't start at all.
- Lift the container straight up. SMEG's bean-locking system holds the beans in while you do it, so you won't spill them.
- Find the two reference notches on the left side of the motor body.
- Lower the container so its notch lines up with the first mark.
- Turn it clockwise until the second pair of marks lines up. You should feel it lock.
- Press the lid down onto the container, and check the container support plate is in place on the base.
- Press START/STOP. The blinking should stop and the motor should run.
Time: 1 minute
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 40%
Difficulty: Easy
Model note: the CGF02's portafilter fork clips into its own housing at the front. It isn't part of the lock, so a loose fork won't make the light blink.
Fix 2: Let the Motor Protection Reset (Works About 25% of the Time)
Both grinders protect their motors with a thermal cut-out. SMEG's limit is 90 seconds of grinding in a row. In Manual mode the motor stops by itself once a grind passes that time, and a run of back-to-back doses can trip it too. Once it trips, the grinder won't do anything until the motor cools.
Signs it's this one: the grinder stopped partway through a grind, or went dead right after a long session, with the container properly locked.
- Press START/STOP to end any grind in progress, then unplug the grinder.
- Wait. SMEG's tables give about 15 minutes for the CGF01 and about 30 minutes for the CGF02 for the protection to reset.
- Plug it back in and run a normal program.
- Next time, keep each manual grind under 90 seconds and let the grinder rest about 15 minutes before running it again, as both safety pages ask.
Time: 15-30 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy
Common mistake: grinding a whole week of filter coffee in one manual run. The CGF01's cup programs (2 to 12) stop by themselves, so use those for big batches instead of holding M.
Fix 3: Clear a Blocked Grinder (Works About 20% of the Time)
If the motor runs but nothing comes out, either no beans are reaching the burrs or something is stopping the burrs from turning freely. SMEG's remedy for a blocked grinder is to take it out and check that nothing blocks rotation. The manuals also warn you to check there are no foreign objects inside the grinder before use.
Signs it's this one: the motor hums or runs, the container has beans in it, and the ground-coffee container or portafilter stays empty.
⚠️ Safety: unplug the grinder before you take anything apart. SMEG says to disconnect it before every assembly, disassembly and cleaning job, and before going near parts that move during use.
- Empty the bean container. If you can, run the grinder in Manual (M) first to clear residue, as SMEG's cleaning steps begin.
- Unplug it. Turn the bean container anticlockwise and lift it off.
- Brush out any loose beans with the supplied cleaning brush.
- Lift the handle on the upper burr, turn the upper burr anticlockwise to release it, and lift it out.
- Look between the upper and lower burrs and in the coffee outlet for anything that isn't coffee. Remove it.
- Brush both burrs and the outlet cavity with the supplied brush or a stiff-bristled one. Don't wash the burrs. SMEG says the grinder "must never be washed and must always be kept dry".
- Refit the upper burr (Fix 4, step 3), refit and lock the container, plug in and test.
Time: 10 minutes

Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy
Tools: the supplied cleaning brush, or any stiff-bristled brush
If the grinder is clear, the burr is refitted and beans are loaded, but still nothing comes out, stop there. That's past what the manual lets you fix.
Fix 4: Refit the Upper Burr (Works About 10% of the Time)
SMEG's table gives two causes for a grind setting that's "incorrect or difficult": a missing upper burr, and worn burrs. The missing burr is the one to rule out first, especially after a clean, when the upper burr comes out and either doesn't go back or isn't turned home. Both manuals open their use instructions by asking you to check it's inserted and secured.
Signs it's this one: the grind setting seems wrong or the lever does little, usually right after you've cleaned the burrs.
- Unplug the grinder and remove the bean container (anticlockwise).
- Check the upper burr is in its seat. If it's out, find it.
- Line up the two notches on the upper burr with the marks on its seat, drop it in and turn it clockwise until it locks.
- Refit the container, plug in and grind a small dose to check the setting.
Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy
Pro tip: when you move to a finer setting, SMEG "highly" recommends taking out the upper burr and cleaning out any leftover beans first. Beans trapped between the burrs make the lever stiff and the first dose uneven. And never move the lever or turn the program knob while the motor is running.
Fix 5: Restore the Factory Doses (Works About 5% of the Time)
Both grinders stop pre-set programs by themselves, using amounts you can reprogram. Hold START/STOP in a program and the grinder learns a new grind time. That's handy, but holding the button too long in a program saves a new dose, and that can look like a fault. The factory reset puts the amounts back. It doesn't fix a fault.
Signs it's this one: the grinder works, but a program now gives far more or far less coffee than it used to.
CGF01:
- Turn the knob to program 12.
- Hold START/STOP for 5 seconds.
- The ring round the button flashes 5 times. Both the espresso and the filter/French press amounts are back to factory values.
CGF02:
- Turn the knob to M (manual).
- Hold START/STOP for 5 seconds.
- The ring flashes 5 times, and the factory values are restored.
Time: 1 minute
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 5%
Difficulty: Easy
Model note: on the CGF01, changing the single-espresso amount also changes the double, and changing the 2-cup amount re-scales every cup program from 2 to 12. On the CGF02, you set programs 1 and 2 separately.
CGF01 vs CGF02: What Differs
| CGF01 | CGF02 | |
|---|---|---|
| Grind lever | FINE / MEDIUM / COARSE | SUPERFINE / FINE / MEDIUM |
| Programs | 1 and 2 (espresso), 2-12 cups, M | 1, 2, M |
| Bean container | 350 g | 240 g |
| Portafilter accessory | Centring filter support | Support fork + 58 mm dosing ring |
| Thermal cut-out wait (table) | About 15 minutes | About 30 minutes |
| Factory reset | Knob on 12, hold 5 s | Knob on M, hold 5 s |
The CGF01's manual matches grind to brewer: FINE for espresso machines and moka pots, MEDIUM for filter machines and COARSE for a French press. The CGF02 doesn't go coarser than MEDIUM, so it isn't the grinder for a French press. SMEG advises SUPERFINE when pairing it with its own EMC02 espresso machine.
Is It Fixed?
Run one pre-set program with the container locked and the burr fitted. A healthy grinder starts as soon as you press START/STOP, the light doesn't blink, and the motor stops by itself at the end of the program. Then move the lever one way and back, between doses only, and check the grind visibly changes.
When DIY Won't Work
Stop and get it serviced if:
- The grind stays wrong with the upper burr fitted and clean. SMEG lists worn grinders as the other cause and says to replace them by taking the appliance to an authorised after-sales centre. The manuals don't give owners a burr-replacement procedure or a part number.
- The motor won't run at all, with the container locked, the outlet working and the motor rested for 30 minutes.
- The cord or plug is damaged. SMEG says only its Technical After-sales centre should replace it.
- You smell burning, or it trips a breaker. Unplug it and stop using it.
SMEG's instruction for a breakdown is plain: don't attempt to repair it. Switch it off, unplug it and contact SMEG's after-sales service. Don't open the motor base.
Warranty: SMEG's UK and Ireland small-appliance guarantee runs 2 years, and SMEG asks you to report faults through help.smeguk.com rather than the shop. SMEG's US and Canada small-appliance warranty is one year, with service through ADCO at 1.888.763.4782. Keep your proof of purchase and the model code from the base.
Keep It Grinding
- Lock the container with the clockwise turn every time you put it back.
- Keep manual grinds under 90 seconds, and give it about 15 minutes' rest after a long run.
- Change the grind only between doses, never with the motor running.
- Clean the burrs before going finer, and whenever the grind starts to look uneven.
- Brush, don't wash, the burrs. SMEG wants them kept dry.
- Wash the containers, lid and plate in warm water with a mild detergent. Wipe the motor base with a damp cloth only, and never put it in water.
- Check for foreign objects in the grinder before use, as both manuals ask.
FAQ
How do I reset my SMEG coffee grinder?
There's only one reset, and it restores the program doses, not a fault. On the CGF01, turn the knob to 12 and hold START/STOP for 5 seconds. On the CGF02, turn the knob to M and hold it for 5 seconds. The ring round the button flashes 5 times to confirm. A grinder that won't run needs Fix 1 or Fix 2 instead.
Why does my SMEG grinder turn itself off?
If it's idle, that's stand-by. Both models switch to stand-by after 90 seconds unused, and START/STOP wakes them up. If it stops mid-grind, the motor's thermal protection has cut in after a long run, and it needs about 15 minutes (CGF01) or 30 minutes (CGF02) to reset.
Can I wash the burrs on a SMEG grinder?
No. Both manuals say the grinder must never be washed and must always be kept dry. Clean the upper and lower burrs and the outlet with the brush that came in the box, or any stiff-bristled brush. The bean container, its lid, the ground-coffee container and the plate are fine in warm, soapy water.
Does the SMEG grinder have error codes?
No. The CGF01 and CGF02 have no display and no codes. The only signal is the light round START/STOP: blinking means the bean container isn't seated, and flashing while you hold the button means you're programming a dose. Pages quoting a SMEG "E06" or similar code are describing a different SMEG machine.
Can I use the CGF02 for filter coffee?
It's built for espresso. Its lever runs from SUPERFINE to MEDIUM, and its programs are single, double and manual. The CGF01 adds a COARSE range and cup programs for filter machines and French press. For a drip machine, SMEG's CGF01 table puts filter coffee at MEDIUM.
Can I replace the burrs myself?
SMEG doesn't give owners a way to. You can lift out and refit the upper burr for cleaning, but SMEG's fix for worn grinders is replacement at an authorised after-sales centre. The manuals don't list burr part numbers.
