Keurig descale light still on after descaling? Usually the brewer never ran in Descale Mode, or the fresh-water rinse stopped early. Steps for each model.
Keurig Descale Light Won't Turn Off? 7 Fixes
Why the Descale Light Stays On (And How to Fix It)
A Keurig descale light that won't turn off almost always means the brewer never finished a descale in Descale Mode. On the K-Supreme, K-Slim and similar models, you enter it by holding 8oz and 12oz for 3 seconds with the brewer off. Pouring descaler through normal brews cleans the brewer but doesn't clear the light. Neither does stopping before the fresh-water rinse ends.
Keurig's own guides are explicit. The K-Supreme Plus guide says to "properly follow the descaling procedure in order to turn off the notification," and its quick-start card adds: "To turn off Descale notification, follow the full descaling procedure." Every step below comes from Keurig's Use & Care Guides for the K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus, K-Slim, K-Elite and K-Duo Essentials. There's no secret reset button combination in any of them.
Which Descale Procedure Does Your Keurig Use?
| Model | How descaling starts | How you know it's finished |
|---|---|---|
| K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus | Brewer off, hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 sec | Rinse until the DESCALE notification turns off |
| K-Slim | Brewer off, hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 sec until DESCALE turns solid | Rinse until ADD WATER lights; brewer exits Descale Mode |
| K-Duo Essentials (Gen 2) | Hold CUPS + OZ for 3 sec | Carafe rinse empties the reservoir; descale light turns off |
| K-Elite | No Descale Mode: normal brews with descaler | Full procedure: 30-min stand + at least 12 rinse brews |
If your model isn't listed, check its Use & Care Guide at support.keurig.com, and look for "Descale Mode" or a button combination.
Try This First
- Did you start with the brewer powered off? On the K-Supreme and K-Slim, the button hold only enters Descale Mode from off.
- Did the brew button flash? A flashing brew button (or a solid DESCALE light on the K-Slim) confirms you're in Descale Mode. Normal brews don't count.
- Did you stop after the descaler ran out? The light only clears after the fresh-water rinse stage.
- Did you use the whole bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution plus one bottle of water? That's the amount the guides specify.
- Was a water filter in the reservoir? Take it out before descaling.
Fix 1: Descale in Descale Mode, Not With Normal Brews (Works About 40% of the Time)
On Keurigs that have Descale Mode, the brewer only counts a descale that runs in that mode. Running descaler or vinegar through normal 12oz brews dissolves scale, but the brewer doesn't register it. The light stays on.
Signs it's this one: you descaled by brewing solution like water, and never pressed a button combination.
K-Supreme / K-Supreme Plus:
- Pour the entire bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution into the empty reservoir, then fill the bottle with water and add that too. Don't insert a pod. Put a large ceramic mug on the drip tray, not a paper cup.
- With the brewer plugged in and powered off, press and hold 8oz and 12oz together for 3 seconds.
- When the brew button flashes, press it. Pour the hot liquid into the sink.
- Repeat until the ADD WATER light comes on.
- Go to Fix 2 for the rinse. That's the stage that clears the light.
K-Slim:
- Add the descaler and water as above, and put a large mug in place.
- With the brewer powered off, hold 8oz and 12oz together for 3 seconds until the DESCALE light turns solid.
- When the brew button flashes, press it. Repeat until ADD WATER lights.
- Empty the reservoir, refill with fresh water to MAX, and continue with Fix 2.
K-Duo Essentials (Gen 2):
- Add the descaler and water, and put a mug on the drip tray and the carafe in place.
- Press and hold CUPS and OZ together for 3 seconds to enter Descale Mode.
- Follow Fix 4. The K-Duo descales both sides.
Time: About 20 minutes
Cost: About $10-15 for Keurig Descaling Solution
Success Rate: About 40%
Difficulty: Easy
Fix 2: Finish the Fresh-Water Rinse (Works About 25% of the Time)
The descale light doesn't turn off when the descaler runs out. It turns off at the end of the fresh-water rinse. People often stop once the solution is gone, or after a couple of rinse brews. The brewer is still in Descale Mode at that point, so the notification stays on.
Signs it's this one: you entered Descale Mode, ran the solution through, and then went back to normal brewing.
K-Supreme / K-Supreme Plus:
- Empty and rinse the reservoir, then refill it to the MAX line with fresh water.
- When the brew button flashes, press it. Pour the hot water into the sink.
- Keep repeating until the DESCALE notification turns off. Refill the reservoir if ADD WATER comes on first.
K-Slim:
- With fresh water at MAX, press the flashing brew button.
- Repeat until ADD WATER lights. The brewer then exits Descale Mode.
Time: 10-15 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy
If you've already gone back to normal brewing, start again from Fix 1. There's no way to resume a descale later. It's quicker to run the whole procedure, and it keeps the solution-to-rinse ratio right.
Fix 3: Run the Full K-Elite Procedure (Works About 10% of the Time)
The K-Elite's guide has no Descale Mode button combination. Its procedure is longer than on other models. It includes a 30-minute stand with the brewer switched on, followed by at least 12 rinse brews at the largest size. If you skipped either stage, the descale wasn't completed the way Keurig describes, so start the procedure again.
Signs it's this one: you own a K-Elite and did a quick descale with only a few rinse brews.
- Empty the reservoir, and remove the Keurig water filter if fitted.
- Press the power button to turn the brewer off. Pour in the whole bottle of descaling solution plus one bottle of water, then turn the brewer back on.
- Put a large mug on the drip tray. Press the hot water button, select the largest size, and brew with no pod. Repeat until ADD WATER lights.
- Let the brewer stand for at least 30 minutes while still on.
- Pour out any solution left in the reservoir and rinse it well.
- Fill with fresh water to the MAX line, no higher. Run rinse brews at the largest size, with no pod, until you've done at least 12. You'll need to refill the reservoir at least once.
Time: About 45 minutes
Cost: About $10-15 for descaling solution
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy
Fix 4: Descale Both Sides of a K-Duo (Works About 10% of the Time)
The K-Duo Essentials descales its single-serve side and its carafe side in one cycle. Keurig's guide says the brewer only exits Descale Mode, and the light only turns off, after the carafe fresh-water rinse empties the reservoir. Stopping after the single-serve rinse leaves the light on.
Signs it's this one: a K-Duo whose light stayed on after you rinsed the single-cup side.
- In Descale Mode (Fix 1), press the flashing BREW button for the single-serve descale.
- When it's done, press the flashing BREW button again for the carafe-side descale. This is only a partial brew. When it finishes, ADD WATER lights. Empty the mug and carafe into the sink.
- Refill the reservoir with fresh water to MAX FILL.
- Press the flashing BREW button for a single-serve rinse, then press it again for a second single-serve rinse. Empty the mug each time.
- Press the flashing BREW button for the carafe rinse. It empties the reservoir. The brewer exits Descale Mode and the descale light turns off.
Time: About 30 minutes
Cost: About $10-15 for descaling solution

Fix 5: Recover a Descale That Stopped Pumping (Works About 10% of the Time)
A heavily scaled Keurig can stop filling once the descaler goes in. Every Keurig guide we checked describes this. You get little or no output, followed by the sound of air blowing out. People often give up at that point, so the cycle never finishes and the light stays on. This is also why some owners find their Keurig won't brew, or seems dead, right after descaling.
Signs it's this one: foam or a trickle, then air noise and no water, partway through descaling.
- Turn off and unplug the brewer.
- If there's descaling solution left in the reservoir, pour it out, rinse the reservoir thoroughly and refill it with fresh water.
- Plug back in, power on, and run the fresh-water rinse (Fix 2, or Fix 3's rinse on a K-Elite). As the solution rinses out and the scale clears, the brewer should start working normally.
- Still not pumping? Leave the brewer unplugged for at least 30 minutes, then carry on with the rinse.
- Once it pumps normally, run the full descale procedure again from the start, so the brewer registers a completed cycle.
Time: 30-60 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy
Foam is normal. Keurig says the solution reacting with scale can produce foam, and that isn't a fault.
Fix 6: Repeat the Full Procedure Once More (Works About 3% of the Time)
A brewer with a lot of scale may need two complete descales. The first dissolves most of the buildup, and the second finishes the job and the rinse. Keurig's guides use the same two-descale threshold for partial cups: if the brewer still brews partial cups after two descales, contact Customer Service.
Signs it's this one: you completed one full descale correctly, but brewing is still slow or short and the light is still on.
- Buy a fresh bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution.
- Run your model's full procedure again from Fix 1 (or Fix 3 or Fix 4), including every rinse brew.
- Don't open the lid, lift the handle or remove the reservoir during the cycle.
- If the light is still on after the second complete descale, go to Fix 7.
Time: 20-45 minutes
Cost: About $10-15
Success Rate: About 3%
Difficulty: Easy
Fix 7: Contact Keurig After Two Complete Descales (Works About 2% of the Time)
If two full descales, done exactly as your model's guide says, don't clear the light, the brewer may have a fault. Keurig's guides say brewers aren't user-serviceable beyond cleaning and descaling. Don't open the brewer to reset it.
- Note your model and when you bought it.
- Call Keurig at 1-866-901-BREW (2739), or use support.keurig.com.
- Explain that you ran two complete descales in Descale Mode, including the full fresh-water rinse.
- Keurig brewers carry a limited one-year warranty. Keurig decides whether to repair or replace, and a replacement may be new or reconditioned. Don't send the brewer anywhere without a Return Materials Authorization (RMA) number from Keurig.

Prevent a Stuck Descale Light
- Descale on schedule: every 3 months for the K-Supreme, K-Slim and K-Duo; every 3-6 months for the K-Elite, as its guide says. Descale sooner with hard water.
- Always use Descale Mode on models that have it
- Don't stop the fresh-water rinse early
- Remove the water filter before descaling
- Don't use distilled water for everyday brewing. The K-Slim guide says not to. Use bottled or filtered water if taste is a problem.
- Descale before and after long storage. Keurig recommends it for brewers stored for a few months or more.

FAQ
Is there a button combination to reset the Keurig descale light?
No. None of Keurig's Use & Care Guides for the K-Supreme, K-Supreme Plus, K-Slim, K-Elite or K-Duo Essentials lists a reset combination. The button holds they list (8oz + 12oz, or CUPS + OZ) start Descale Mode. The light turns off when the full procedure, including the fresh-water rinse, is complete.
Can I use vinegar instead of Keurig Descaling Solution?
Keurig's guides are written for Keurig Descaling Solution: a whole bottle plus a bottle of water. Vinegar dissolves scale too, but the procedure and rinse counts in the guides assume Keurig's solution. If you use vinegar, still run it in Descale Mode and complete every rinse, or the light won't clear either way.
Why won't my Keurig turn on or brew after descaling?
Usually a heavily scaled brewer stopped filling partway through. Keurig's guides describe little or no output and the sound of air. Turn it off and unplug it, rinse the reservoir, refill it with fresh water, then run the fresh-water rinse. If it still won't pump, leave it unplugged for 30 minutes first (Fix 5).
On models with a power button, check it's switched on too. Keurigs turn themselves off 5 minutes after the last brew.
How often should I descale my Keurig?
Keurig says every 3 months for the K-Supreme, K-Slim and K-Duo Essentials, or when the descale light comes on. The K-Elite guide says every 3-6 months. Descale more often with hard water, or if brews get slower or smaller.
Does the descale light stop my Keurig from brewing?
The light is a reminder. It doesn't block brewing. But the scale it warns about reduces performance over time. Keurig's guides link repeated partial cups to scale, and after two descales, to a Customer Service call.
