SMEG Bean-to-Cup Warning Lights: What Each Means (BCC02)
SMEG Bean-to-Cup Lights: Steady Warns, Flashing Blocks
The SMEG BCC02 bean-to-cup machine has five alarm lights above its drink keys: a water drop, a coffee bean, the grounds container, an exclamation mark and the descaling symbol. It has no numbered error codes. What matters is whether a light is steady or flashing. A steady light is a warning, and on most alarms you can still make coffee. A flashing light on the grounds, exclamation-mark or descaling alarm means the machine is blocked until you fix it.
The exclamation mark is the brewing group alarm. Steady, it means the brewing group is missing or not seated properly. Flashing, it means the side access door isn't fitted correctly.
This guide follows SMEG's BCC02 user manual. The BCC01 is the same family without the steam wand, but its manual wasn't read for this page. For SMEG's drip and espresso machines, see our SMEG error lights guide.
What Each Light Means
| Light (icon) | Steady | Flashing |
|---|---|---|
| Water drop (tank) | — | Tank missing, empty or too low: fit it or fill it |
| Coffee bean | Beans at the minimum or gone: fill the bean container | — |
| Grounds container | Grounds container full: empty it | Grounds container or the internal drip tray missing or fitted wrongly: machine blocked |
| Exclamation mark (!) | Brewing group missing or not inserted correctly: machine blocked | Access door on the side not fitted correctly: machine blocked |
| Descaling | Descale soon: drinks continue for a limited number of cycles | Machine blocked in all functions until you descale |
| All keys blinking at once | — | "Internal water circuit error": check the tank has water and wait for it to reset; if it persists, call service |
Normal, not alarms: at switch-on the drink keys flash in sequence while the machine heats, then it runs a short self-cleaning rinse. Drink keys lit white = Primary menu, orange = Secondary menu (light drinks, long coffee and steam). A key flashing after you hold it for 3 seconds = you're programming its quantity.
SMEG's manual doesn't give a colour for the five alarm lights, so match the icon, not the colour.
Try This First
- Which icon is lit, and is it steady or flashing? That's the whole diagnosis. Use the table above.
- Just emptied the grounds? SMEG says to empty the grounds container with the machine switched ON. "This is the only way of resetting the coffee grounds counter."
- Water tank seated and above minimum? A flashing water-drop light also stops a drink mid-way.
- Side door clicked shut? A flashing exclamation mark is usually just the door.
Fix 1: Exclamation Mark: Refit the Brewing Group and Door
Steady exclamation mark: the brewing group is missing or not inserted correctly. Flashing: the access door isn't assembled correctly. Either way the machine won't make drinks until it's fixed.
- Unplug the machine. SMEG says to always disconnect the plug before touching the brewing group.
- Remove the side door: press the door at the bottom until it releases, then lift it away at the top.
- Take out the brewing group: press the two release clips on its sides and pull it out.
- Rinse it under running water, dry it, and slide it back in until it's positioned correctly.
- Refit the door, making sure it sits correctly.
- Plug in and switch on.
⚠️ Don't put the brewing group in the dishwasher. SMEG says it can be damaged permanently.

Fix 2: Grounds Light: Empty It With the Machine On
Steady: the grounds container is full. Flashing: the grounds container or the internal drip tray under it is missing or fitted wrongly, and the machine is blocked.
- Leave the machine switched on. If you empty it while it's off, the counter doesn't reset and the light comes back.
- Remove the external drip tray.
- Pull out the grounds container together with the internal drip tray.
- Empty the grounds, wash both parts with mild dish detergent, and dry them.
- Push both back in fully, then refit the drip tray.
SMEG recommends emptying and cleaning the grounds container and internal tray daily.
Time: 3 minutes
Cost: Free
Difficulty: Easy
Fix 3: Water and Bean Lights
Flashing water drop: the tank is out, empty or too low. Lift the tank cover, remove the tank, fill it with fresh cold water up to MAX, and push it fully back in. A tank that's empty or not inserted is also SMEG's cause for a machine that stops during dispensing.
Steady coffee bean: the beans are at the minimum or gone. Fill the bean container. SMEG says to use whole beans only, because the machine isn't designed for ground coffee.
Adjusting the grind while you're here? Turn the grinding knob only while the grinder is running, or on first use with the bean container completely empty. Turning it with beans inside and the grinder stopped "could damage the grinding unit".
Time: 2 minutes

Difficulty: Easy
Fix 4: Descaling Light: Run the Full Cycle
Steady: SMEG "highly" recommends descaling now; you can still make drinks for a limited number of cycles. Flashing: the machine is blocked until you descale. How often it asks depends on the water hardness you've set (Fix 5).
- Put a container of at least 1.4 litres under both the coffee dispenser and the steam wand.
- Make sure the Primary menu is selected (keys lit white).
- Fill the tank to MAX with water and descaler, in the doses the descaler's maker recommends.
- With the machine ready, hold the program key and the Coffee key together for at least 3 seconds. The Coffee key flashes orange and the descaling light stays on.
- Wait. The machine pauses during the cycle to let the descaler work. It ends when the tank is empty.
- Rinse: fill the tank with clean water to MAX and press the Coffee key. The rinse ends when the tank is empty and the keys turn white.
Descaling light still on afterwards? SMEG says that means too little descaler was used, so run another full cycle.
Time: One tank of solution plus one tank of rinse water (SMEG says "several minutes", with pauses)
Cost: Descaler
Difficulty: Easy
Fix 5: Set the Water Hardness
The descaling alert follows the hardness setting. SMEG's FAQ says the machine leaves the factory set to hard. Test your water with the strip in the box, then:
- Hold the Ristretto key and the program key together for at least 3 seconds. The water, bean and grounds lights start flashing.
- Press the Ristretto key to choose: water-drop light = Light, bean light = Medium, grounds light = Hard. The chosen light stays on.
- Hold the same two keys for 3 seconds to save, or just wait 15 seconds.
Using SMEG's optional softener filter? Set the hardness to Light.

All Keys Blinking at Once
When all the keys blink together, SMEG's troubleshooting calls it an internal water circuit error. Check there's water in the tank and wait for the circuit to reset. If it keeps happening, contact SMEG's service centre.
Other BCC02 Problems in SMEG's Table
| Problem | SMEG's cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Coffee comes out slowly | Grind too fine: go coarser (while grinding); or a clogged dispenser spout: clean it |
| Coffee comes out too fast | Grind too coarse: go finer; or worn grinders: authorised service centre |
| Coffee not hot | Long inactivity: dispense hot water into the same cup first. After breaks over 20 minutes, the first coffees can be cooler |
| No steam | Not up to temperature: wait until the steam key stops flashing and stays lit |
| Machine switched itself off | It switches off after 20 minutes of non-use |
Reset drink quantities: hold ON/OFF and the program key together for at least 3 seconds. A single beep confirms the factory settings are back. This resets your programmed drink sizes. It doesn't clear the alarms, which go out when you fix their cause.
When to Call SMEG Service
- All keys blinking at once and it doesn't reset with water in the tank
- Coffee runs too fast even at a finer grind: SMEG lists worn grinders, a service-centre job
- Any other fault the table doesn't solve: SMEG says other servicing "should be performed by an authorized service representative"
Before storing it or sending it for service, SMEG's Empty system routine drains the water. Hold the Ristretto and Hot water keys together for 3 seconds. The machine drains through the dispenser and the steam wand and switches itself off. Let it finish.
Keep the Alarms Away
| Task | How often |
|---|---|
| Empty the grounds container and internal tray (machine on) | Daily |
| Empty the drip tray | When the red float pops up |
| Rinse the brewing group under running water (unplugged) | When you clean; SMEG's FAQ says an alarm also tells you when it's due |
| Descale | When the descaling light comes on |
| Manual rinse after steam (Primary menu: hold the program and Hot water keys 3 s) | After using the steam wand |
FAQ
What does the exclamation mark mean on a SMEG coffee machine?
On the SMEG BCC02 bean-to-cup, the exclamation mark is the brewing group alarm. Steady means the brewing group is missing or not seated, and flashing means the side access door isn't fitted correctly. Either way the machine stops until you fix it.
Why is my SMEG bean-to-cup light flashing?
A flashing alarm usually means the machine is blocked. Flashing grounds = container or internal tray missing; flashing exclamation mark = access door; flashing descaling = descaling is now mandatory; flashing water drop = no water or tank not fitted.
How do I reset my SMEG coffee machine after cleaning?
Empty the grounds container with the machine switched on, because that's the only way to reset the grounds counter. Refit the brewing group, its door and the drip trays so their alarms clear. Holding ON/OFF and the program key for 3 seconds restores drink quantities. It isn't an alarm reset.
Does the SMEG BCC02 have error codes?
No. It uses five alarm lights and the drink keys. The only fault SMEG names is "internal water circuit error", shown by all keys blinking at once.
Can I use ground coffee in a SMEG bean-to-cup machine?
No. SMEG says the machine is designed for whole beans only, not ground coffee.
