Original, Arte, Prestigio, Maestro or Opera? Each wires its lights differently. Find your model, read its light table, and clear water, tamping and descale alerts.

One Name, Five Different Light Panels

A De'Longhi La Specialista doesn't show numbered error codes. Its warning lights do the talking, and each model wires them differently. The general alarm alone looks different on almost every one: a lit triangle on the original La Specialista and the Maestro, all three temperature lights flashing on the Arte, every light flashing on the Prestigio, and a red triangle on the Opera. So identify your model first, then read its own table below.

Most La Specialista lights are routine: an empty tank, beans to refill, a tamp to finish, a descale or a cleaning cycle that's due. Only the general alarm means "call De'Longhi". This guide follows De'Longhi's US instructions for the five models that use lights. The La Specialista Touch has a display and its manual wasn't read for this page.

The model code is on the rating plate and in your manual. Every model blinks all its lights briefly at switch-on. That's a self-diagnosis and needs nothing from you.

Try This First

  • Note the light and its state. Steady and flashing mean different things on every La Specialista, so "the water light" isn't enough.
  • Press the water tank down. Its valves open only when it's fully seated. Every model's table lists an unseated tank as a cause of a flashing water light.
  • Check the tamping lever is back up (original, Prestigio, Opera). A lever left down keeps a tamping light on.
  • Look at the bean container. Empty, not clicked in, or a grind selector moved too far all light a bean or "!" light.
  • Read the colour on the Opera. Its one triangle is orange for "clean the coffee spout" and red for the general alarm.

La Specialista (Original, EC9335) Lights

The first La Specialista has eight indicator lights above the pressure gauge: descale, steam ready, overtemperature, energy saving, general alarm (triangle), beans, no water and tamping.

La Specialista Arte (EC9155) Lights

The Arte has no tamping lever, so it has no tamping light. Its lights are the water light, the red descale light, the OK button light and three temperature lights. For brewing faults, see our La Specialista Arte not working guide.

La Specialista Prestigio (EC9355) Lights

The Prestigio adds a tamping light, a bean-container "!" light and an orange cleaning light. Our Prestigio not working guide covers its brewing faults.

La Specialista Maestro Lights

The Maestro shares the Prestigio's layout but has a dedicated general alarm light (a triangle), a milk-clean light for the LatteCrema System and no tamping light in its table. Its descale light is orange, not red. More in our Maestro not working guide.

La Specialista Opera (EC9555) Lights

The Opera makes hot and cold drinks, and its OK light shows which: white for hot, blue for cold. One triangle does two jobs, and an anti-clogging light watches the grinder funnel.

Fix 1: Clear a Flashing Water Light (Tank Is Full)

A flashing water light while the tank is full means water isn't getting through. De'Longhi's tables list the same five causes on every model: the tank isn't pressed down far enough to open its valves, the grind is too fine, the filter in the portafilter is clogged, scale in the circuit, or (on the original and Maestro) an air bubble from the water softener filter. The original also lists too much coffee in the filter.

Signs it's this one: coffee comes out slowly or not at all, with water in the tank.

  1. Press the tank down lightly until it sits fully home. Its bottom valves only open when it's seated.
  2. Rinse the filter basket under running water. On the original, also pull out the perforated disc by its tab, clear the holes and push it back.
  3. Regrind one step coarser, adjusting only while the grinder runs, and check the tamped dose sits at the "perfect dose" mark, not above it.
  4. Softener filter fitted? (Original, Maestro.) Release the air bubble: press the hot water button and let delivery stop by itself. On the original, take the filter out first, then refit it.
  5. Still flashing? Descale (Fix 3).

Time: 5-10 minutes

Difficulty: Easy

Fix 2: Clear a Tamping or Anti-Clogging Light

These lights mean the dose didn't make it from the grinder into a pressed basket. A flashing tamping light right after grinding is just the prompt to pull the lever. A light that comes back, or comes with the triangle (original), usually means coffee is packed in the funnel between the burrs and the basket.

Signs it's this one: the basket comes out empty after grinding, or with too much coffee in it.

  1. Pull the lever all the way down after grinding. The Prestigio and Opera manuals say to keep it down while you draw the portafilter away, then return it to rest (on the Opera, the 1x/2x lights stop blinking).
  2. Brush the attachment area, pull the lever fully down and brush the presser, then release it.
  3. Push the tube brush through the coffee funnel.
  4. Still clogged? Open the access hatch or flap (Prestigio, Maestro, Opera, original) and free the coffee guide with the brush.
  5. Opera: check the 1x/2x selection matches the basket, and turn the dose dial down.

Time: 5 minutes

Fix 3: Run the Descale Cycle Your Model Uses

The descale light comes on after a period set by the water hardness in the menu, and it goes out only when the full cycle and its rinse finish. Every La Specialista manual says to use De'Longhi descaler only: the wrong descaler can cause faults the guarantee doesn't cover.

  1. Remove the water softener filter, if you use one.
  2. Pour De'Longhi descaler to level A inside the tank (one 100 ml packet), then water to level B.
  3. Take the portafilter off and put containers under the spouts and the steam wand. The Arte, Prestigio, Maestro and Opera manuals call for about 2 L of capacity.
  4. Start the cycle for your model:
    • Original, Prestigio: turn the dial to Descaling, press OK.
    • Arte: turn the dial to Descaling, hold OK at least 3 seconds.
    • Maestro: fit the descaling accessory to the LatteCrema connection, then hold the Descaling button until it blinks.
    • Opera: hold the hot water button until the descale light blinks, then press OK.
  5. Rinse: when it stops, empty the containers, rinse the tank, fill it to MAX and start the rinse (OK, or the Rinse button on the original).

Asked for another rinse? The tank wasn't filled to MAX. Repeat the rinse.

Time: About 40 minutes (Arte, Prestigio, Maestro); about 20 (Opera); the original's manual gives no time
Cost: De'Longhi descaler
Difficulty: Easy

Model-by-model descaling detail is in our De'Longhi descaling guide.

Fix 4: Run the Coffee Outlet Cleaning Cycle

The orange cleaning light (Prestigio, Maestro) and the orange triangle (Opera) ask for a cleaning cycle that pushes a cleaning tab through the coffee outlet. It isn't a fault. You need the 1-cup filter, the cleaning disc that came with the machine and a De'Longhi cleaning tab (the Opera ships with some; the Prestigio and Maestro manuals say they're bought separately).

  1. Put the 1-cup filter in the portafilter and press the cleaning disc to the bottom.
  2. Put a cleaning tab on the disc, and attach the portafilter to the coffee outlet.
  3. Fill the tank and empty the drip tray.
  4. Start it: Prestigio, hold the hot water button until the cleaning light blinks orange · Maestro, hold Active Rinse · Opera, hold the temperature button until the triangle blinks, then press OK.
  5. When it stops, wash the portafilter and filter, run the rinse it asks for, and empty the drip tray.

Time: A few minutes
Cost: Cleaning tabs
Difficulty: Easy

When DIY Won't Work

  • General alarm (original and Maestro triangle on, Arte's three temperature lights flashing, Prestigio's all lights flashing, Opera's red triangle): every manual's remedy is contact De'Longhi Customer Services. Don't keep restarting it.
  • Espresso dripping from the portafilter edges when it's locked in firmly: the manuals list a worn or dirty gasket or seal (the Opera calls it the coffee spout seal) that Customer Services replaces.
  • Dose short of the mark with the dose dial at maximum (and, on the Arte, Prestigio and Opera, the extra grinding range already selected): the burrs are worn. De'Longhi's service replaces them.
  • Doesn't grind after you've removed foreign matter: the original and Prestigio let you lift out the upper burr to clean it; the Opera manual says turn the selector to 15 and vacuum out the beans; the Arte's says selector to 8 and vacuum. If it still won't grind, call.

De'Longhi's US safeguards say not to remove the cover and that repairs should be done by authorised service personnel only, so opening the machine can void the warranty. Your warranty card and the support page for your model at delonghi.com give the terms and contacts for your country.

FAQ

What does the triangle light mean on a La Specialista?

It depends on the model. On the original La Specialista and the Maestro, a lit triangle is the general alarm: contact Customer Services. On the Opera, the triangle is orange when the coffee spout needs its cleaning cycle and red for the general alarm. On the original, a triangle flashing with the overtemperature light means the drip tray isn't seated.

Is there a yellow warning light on a La Specialista?

None of the five manuals calls any light yellow. The amber-looking lights they describe are orange: the cleaning light on the Prestigio and Maestro, the Opera's triangle when the spout needs cleaning, the Maestro's descale light, and the Arte's OK light during descaling. Match your light to those rows.

Why are all the lights flashing on my La Specialista?

A brief flash of every light at switch-on is a self-diagnosis and is normal on all five models. If every light keeps flashing on a Prestigio, that's its general alarm. On the Arte, the general alarm is only the three temperature lights flashing together.

Does a La Specialista have error codes?

No. The original, Arte, Prestigio, Maestro and Opera manuals use lights only, with no numbered codes. The La Specialista Touch has a display, and its manual wasn't read for this guide.

How do I reset a La Specialista to its default settings?

Each model resets from its own menu, and a reset restores settings only. It doesn't clear an alarm.

Original: hold X2 + My 3 s, then hold My until it flashes. Arte: hold the 1-or-2-cups and temperature buttons 3 s, then hold STEAM 3 s. Prestigio: X2 + My 5 s, then hold My 5 s. Maestro: X2 + My 5 s, then OK 5 s. Opera: 1x + hot water 5 s, then hold hot water until OK blinks.

Can I descale a La Specialista with vinegar?

The manuals say to use De'Longhi descaler only and warn that an unsuitable descaler can cause faults the guarantee doesn't cover. None of them gives a vinegar method.
