Water, grounds or triangle light on, four lights flashing, or coffee only dripping? Every ESAM3300 light pattern and fix, from De'Longhi's US instruction book.
De'Longhi Magnifica ESAM3300 Not Working? 8 Fixes (Lights Explained)
Most ESAM3300 Faults Are the Infuser, Not the Machine
A De'Longhi Magnifica ESAM3300 that won't make coffee is rarely broken. Its alarm lights usually point to the removable infuser behind the service door, the grounds container, or the water tank. Four lights flashing in turn with a strange noise means the infuser was left out, and De'Longhi's fix is to press 1 CUP and 2 CUPS together before you open the door.
The ESAM3300 is the original Magnifica, with two dials on the front (coffee quantity and coffee flavor), a ground-coffee button and a row of small warning lights. It has no screen and no numbered error codes. The lights have to be read by pattern, steady or flashing, and several patterns mean something different on the newer Magnifica S. Everything below follows De'Longhi's own US instruction book for the ESAM3300, from its US support page.
One rule from that book saves most service calls: the infuser can only come out with the machine switched off at the on/off button. Pulling it with the machine on can cause serious damage.
What Your ESAM3300 Lights Mean
| What you see | What De'Longhi says it means | Go to |
|---|---|---|
| Water light steady | Tank empty, not pushed in, or dirty and scaled | Fix 1 |
| Water light flashing, machine noisy | Tank was removed while coffee was being made | Fix 1 |
| Grounds light steady | Grounds container full or not in place | Fix 2 |
| Four lights flash in turn, strange noise | Infuser left out after cleaning | Fix 3 |
| Grounds and triangle flash alternately at switch-on | Infuser not clicked in, door not shut | Fix 3 |
| Triangle flashing | Service door open | Fix 3 |
| Triangle steady, green lights flashing | Infuser out, or the inside is very dirty | Fix 3, Fix 4 |
| Grounds light flashing | Out of beans, or ground-coffee mode with no coffee in the funnel | Fix 5 |
| Ground-coffee light flashing | Ground coffee funnel clogged | Fix 5 |
| 1-cup, 2-cup and hot water lights flashing | Switched on with the steam knob open | Fix 7 |
| Descale light flashing | Time to descale | Fix 8 |
The two green cup lights flashing on their own just means the machine is heating. Wait for them to go steady before you brew.
Try This First
- Close the steam knob all the way clockwise, then switch the machine on again.
- Turn the frother towards the center before you lift the water tank out. The tank won't come out otherwise.
- Push the water tank all the way in, and don't take it out while coffee is being made.
- Empty the grounds container every time you pull the drip tray, even if it isn't full. De'Longhi says a part-full container can overfill on the next coffee and block the machine.
- Check the service door is shut. A flashing triangle means it isn't.
Fix 1: Clear the Water Light (Works About 20% of the Time)
The water light has two meanings. Steady means the tank is empty, not pushed fully in, or dirty and lined with scale. Flashing, with a noisy machine and no coffee, means the tank was taken out while coffee was being made. De'Longhi's reset for that is to run water through the frother.
Signs it's this one: the water light is on with a full tank, or the pump got loud right after you refilled mid-cup.
- Turn the frother towards the center of the machine, then lift the tank out.
- Rinse it. If it's furred with scale, descale the tank itself.
- Fill it to no higher than MAX, and push it all the way in.
- If the water light is flashing: put a cup under the frother, turn the steam knob counter-clockwise as far as it goes and let water run for a few seconds. Then close the knob.
- Wait for the two cup lights to go steady before making coffee.
Time: 2 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy
A little water left in the tank when the light comes on is normal, according to the book.
Fix 2: Empty the Grounds Container and Drip Tray (Works About 15% of the Time)
The ESAM3300 counts coffees. After 14 single cups or 7 doubles, the grounds light comes on steady and the machine stops making coffee until you empty the container. The same light shows when the container isn't in place, including after cleaning.
Signs it's this one: the grounds light is on steady and nothing brews.
- Open the service door on the front by pulling its handle.
- Pull out the drip tray and empty it.
- Empty the grounds container and clean it, including anything stuck on the bottom.
- Wipe up any condensation inside the machine under the drip tray.
- Refit the container and tray fully, then close the door.
Time: 3 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 15%
Difficulty: Easy
Empty the drip tray on its own whenever its red level indicator starts to show. Neither the tray nor the grounds container can go in the dishwasher.
Fix 3: Get the Infuser and Service Door Right (Works About 15% of the Time)
The infuser is the brewing unit behind the service door. If it isn't clicked in with both red buttons sprung out, the door won't close properly and the machine won't run. Three different light patterns point here, and one has its own recovery step.
Signs it's this one: any pattern with the triangle or "four lights in turn" from the table above, right after cleaning.
Four lights flashing in turn, with a strange noise (infuser left out):
- Leave the service door closed and the infuser out.
- Press 1 CUP and 2 CUPS together until all four lights go off.
- Only then open the door and fit the infuser (steps below).
Fitting the infuser:
- Slide it onto its supports so the pin goes into the pipe at the bottom of the infuser.
- Press where it's marked PUSH until it clicks.
- Check that both red buttons have snapped out. If they haven't, the door won't close.
- Close the door and press the on/off button.
If it's hard to push in: squeeze the infuser firmly from above and below at the same time, then try again. Still stuck? Leave it out, close the door, unplug the machine and plug it back in. Wait for all the lights to go off, then open the door and fit it.
Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 15%
Difficulty: Easy
Triangle steady and the green lights flashing can also mean the inside of the machine is very dirty. Clean it as in Fix 4.
Fix 4: Clean the Infuser and the Inside of the Machine (Works About 10% of the Time)
Coffee builds up on the infuser and inside the brewing area, and De'Longhi says these deposits lead to malfunctions. The book asks for regular cleaning, and also after the machine has stood unused for a long time. This is also the fix for several ground-coffee mistakes (Fix 5).
Signs it's this one: a steady triangle with flashing green lights, a sluggish or messy brew, or coffee coming out round the service door.
⚠️ Safety: switch off with the on/off button and wait for every light to go out before you open the door. De'Longhi says not to unplug it for this step, and never to remove the infuser while the machine is on.
- Press the on/off button and wait for all the lights to go off.
- Open the service door. Take out the drip tray and grounds container and clean them.
- Press the two red release buttons on the infuser sideways and towards the center, and pull it out.
- Rinse it under running water without detergent. Never put it in the dishwasher.
- Scrape the coffee off the parts inside the machine with a plastic or wooden fork, then vacuum up the residue.
- Refit the infuser as in Fix 3, then the tray and container, and close the door.
Time: 15 minutes
Cost: Free
Tools: a plastic or wooden fork and a vacuum cleaner
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy
Coffee running out round the service door instead of the spouts? De'Longhi gives two causes. The spout holes may be clogged with dry coffee, so scrape them with a needle. Or the mobile drawer inside the service door may be stuck, so clean it, especially round its hinges, until it swings freely.
Fix 5: Fix Slow, Fast or Watery Coffee (Works About 15% of the Time)
The ESAM3300 has two dials and a grinder adjustment, and each changes the shot in a different way. The flavor dial sets how many beans it grinds. The quantity dial sets the cup size. The grinding coarseness regulator, inside the bean container, sets how fine it grinds.
Signs it's this one: coffee that drips, gushes, tastes thin, or comes out as plain water.
| Problem | De'Longhi's fix |
|---|---|
| Coffee comes out a drop at a time | Turn the grinding regulator one click clockwise (coarser), or the flavor dial a little counter-clockwise |
| Coffee too fast, not creamy | Flavor dial a little clockwise; if still thin after several coffees, regulator one click counter-clockwise |
| Coffee tastes thin over time | The grinder wears and grinds coarser, so go one click counter-clockwise |
| 1 CUP or 2 CUPS gives only water | Ground coffee stuck in the funnel |
Adjusting the grind:
- Start a coffee so the grinder is running. Only turn the regulator while the grinder runs.
- Turn it one click (one number) at a time.
- Judge the result after at least 2 cups.
Using pre-ground coffee:
- With the machine on, press the ground-coffee button. Its light comes on and the grinder is switched off.
- Lift the central lid and add one measuring scoop, no more. Use 1 CUP only.
- Press the button again afterwards to go back to beans.
If the funnel blocks, push the coffee down with a plastic knife, then clean the infuser and the inside as in Fix 4. The same clean-up applies if you added more than one scoop, added coffee with the machine off, or forgot to press the ground-coffee button.
Time: 5-10 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 15%
Difficulty: Easy
Grounds light flashing: add beans, or add the scoop of ground coffee you selected. A very noisy grinder means a small stone in the beans may have jammed it. De'Longhi says to take it to an authorized service center, not to open it yourself.
Fix 6: Make the Coffee Hotter (Works About 10% of the Time)
The book's two causes for coffee that isn't hot are cold cups and a cold infuser. The infuser cools down if the machine sits for more than 2-3 minutes between coffees.
Signs it's this one: lukewarm coffee, especially the first cup or after a pause.
- Press the rinse button before brewing. It heats the infuser with a short shot of hot water into the drip tray.
- Use that hot water to warm your cup, then empty it.
- Or leave cups on the cup warmer tray with the machine on for at least 20 minutes.
- Avoid thick cups unless they're preheated, because they soak up heat.
Time: 1 minute
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy
Fix 7: Get Steam and Hot Water Working (Works About 10% of the Time)
If the 1-cup, 2-cup and hot water lights flash together at switch-on, the machine was turned on with the steam knob open. If the knob turns and no steam comes out, De'Longhi blames clogged holes in the frother.
Signs it's this one: no steam, weak steam, or flashing lights right after switching on.
- Turn the steam knob fully clockwise if those three lights are flashing.
- Purge the frother with a few seconds of steam, then close the knob fully.
- Hold the frother handle and unscrew the frother cover clockwise, then pull it down.
- Pull the steam nozzle down off the spout.
- Wash both in warm water, and clear the two small holes with a needle or pin.
- Push the nozzle back up firmly, then refit the cover by pushing it up and turning counter-clockwise.
Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy
For froth, use about 3.5 oz of skim or 2% milk straight from the fridge (about 41°F / 5°C). Don't dip the frother past the raised line on it. Steam for no more than 2 minutes at a time, and run hot water for no more than 2 minutes.
Fix 8: Descale When the Light Flashes (Works About 5% of the Time)
The descale light flashes when the machine has run long enough for scale to build up, judged against your water hardness setting. You can keep making coffee for now, but De'Longhi says failure to descale regularly invalidates the warranty.
Signs it's this one: the descale light is flashing.
- Empty the tank. Add one 125 ml bottle of descaler plus 1 liter of water (the book names DURGOL; an earlier edition says to dilute the descaler as its pack directs). Keep it off marble and granite.
- Put a container of at least 34 oz under the frother.
- Switch on and wait for the green lights to go steady.
- Hold the rinse/descale button for at least 5 seconds. The descale light comes on and the cup lights go off.
- Turn the steam knob half a turn counter-clockwise. The machine runs the solution through in stages.
- After about 30 minutes, when the water light comes on, close the knob.
- Rinse and refill the tank with clean water, empty the container, and open the knob half a turn again. When the tank is empty and the water light comes on, close the knob and refill the tank.
Time: About 45 minutes
Cost: About $10-15 for descaler
Success Rate: About 5%
Difficulty: Easy
If the cycle is interrupted, the light stays on and you have to start again from the beginning.
Descale light coming on too often? Set the water hardness. Dip the test strip for a few seconds and wait about 30 seconds. With the machine off, hold the rinse button for 5 seconds until four lights come on. Press the ground-coffee button until the number of lit lights matches the red squares, then press the rinse button to save.
When DIY Won't Work
Stop and contact De'Longhi or an authorized service center if:
- The grinder is very noisy or jammed. De'Longhi suspects a stone in the beans and sends this to service.
- The infuser won't come out with the machine switched off and all lights out. Don't force it.
- Lights or noises keep coming back after the matching fix in the table above.
- The on/off button does nothing in an outlet you've checked works.
Warranty: De'Longhi's book says there are no user-serviceable parts inside and repairs should be done by authorized service personnel. The US limited warranty printed in it runs two years from purchase for the original buyer. If your machine is past that window, expect a paid repair. Find a service center through delonghi.com.
Prevention
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| Every refill | Frother to the center, tank pushed fully in |
| Every 14 singles or 7 doubles | Empty the grounds container (the light will remind you) |
| Every time you pull the drip tray | Empty the grounds container too |
| After every milk drink | Purge and clean the frother |
| Regularly, and after long disuse | Clean the infuser and the inside (Fix 4) |
| When the light flashes | Descale (Fix 8) |
| Once | Set the water hardness |
Never fill the bean container with ground, freeze-dried or caramelized coffee, and never add ground coffee to the funnel with the machine off.
FAQ
Does the ESAM3300 turn itself off?
Yes. De'Longhi says it switches itself off 3 hours after the last use, running a short rinse first. It also rinses whenever you switch it off with the on/off button. That hot water in the drip tray is normal.
Why is my brand-new ESAM3300 making weak coffee?
De'Longhi says the first 4-5 coffees won't be at their best, and the grinder shouldn't be adjusted until you've made some. Traces of coffee in a new grinder are from factory testing, not a used machine.
Can I make a bigger cup after the coffee stops?
Yes. Within 3 seconds of the coffee stopping, press and hold the same button (1 CUP or 2 CUPS) until you have the amount you want.
Is the ESAM3300 the same as the Magnifica S?
No. The Magnifica S (ECAM22.11X) has a different control panel and its own light patterns, so don't read one machine's lights from the other's manual. Our De'Longhi warning lights guide covers the newer Magnifica models.
Can the infuser go in the dishwasher?
No. De'Longhi says the infuser, grounds container, water tank and drip tray must never go in the dishwasher. Rinse the infuser under running water without detergent.
