Nespresso blinking orange, green or not at all? Every light pattern from the Vertuo, Pixie, CitiZ, Essenza Mini and Lattissima manuals, with the fix for each.
Nespresso Error Codes: Red, Orange & Yellow Light Fixes (All Models)
Nespresso Error Lights Depend on Which Machine You Have
Nespresso home machines don't display error codes. They signal with the button light, and what a colour means depends on the family. A Vertuo Next or Pop uses white and orange, where orange blinking twice then going dark means an error. A Vertuo Plus uses green and orange. A Pixie, CitiZ or Essenza Mini has no colours at all, only blinking or steady lights.
So the same "orange light" can mean an empty tank on one machine and a normal cleaning cycle on another. Find your machine's section below, match the pattern, and do the fix Nespresso prints for it. Everything here comes from the user manuals for the Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ and Plus, Pixie, CitiZ, CitiZ Platinum, Essenza Mini, Lattissima One and Creatista.
Nespresso Error Codes Quick Reference
| What you see | Machine | What the manual says | First fix |
|---|---|---|---|
| Orange, 2 quick blinks, then long off | Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ | Error | Check the capsule and lever, unplug 10 seconds |
| Orange on 1.5 s, off 0.5 s | Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ | Water tank is empty | Fill and seat the tank |
| Orange fading to off, then back on | Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ | Cooling down after overheating | Off, on, wait about 20 minutes |
| Orange and white, 3 blinks, then steady | Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ | Descaling alert | Descale soon |
| Orange blinking 2 or 3 times a second | Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ | Cleaning, or descaling/emptying, running | Let it finish |
| Green, 2 blinks, back to steady green | Vertuo Plus | Water tank empty or capsule missing | Fill the tank, check the capsule |
| Steady or slow-blinking orange | Vertuo Plus | Special function menu, or a function running | Let it finish |
| Irregular blinking | Pixie, CitiZ, Essenza Mini, Lattissima One | Needs repair | Call Nespresso |
| Red backlight | Original Pixie (EN125) | Water tank empty or needs cleaning | Fill or clean the tank |
| All buttons blinking fast | CitiZ Platinum | Error, overheating, or below freezing | Wait a few minutes, then unplug and replug |
| All buttons blink 10 s, then it switches off | Lattissima One | Error alarm, needs repair | Call Nespresso |
| Descaling alert orange | Lattissima One | Descaling due | Descale |
| "Machine Error" on screen | Creatista Plus | A major fault | Press START/CANCEL; call if it persists |
Numbered text codes, such as "Error on coffee main: 124", don't appear in any home-machine manual listed above. Searches for them mostly mention Nespresso Professional office machines. See our Error 124 guide.
Try This First
- Lock the lever fully. Every Vertuo troubleshooting row starts by checking the lever is locked. On a Pixie or CitiZ, a lever that won't close usually means a full capsule container.
- Refill the water tank and press it fully into place. Tank problems cause more light patterns than anything else in these manuals.
- Open the head and let the capsule eject, then try a fresh, undamaged capsule.
- Check whether a cycle is still running. Fast orange blinking on a Vertuo while only water flows is a cleaning, descaling or emptying cycle, not an error.
- Switch it off, unplug it for 10 seconds, and plug it back in. That's the step Nespresso itself prints for the Vertuo fault pattern.
Vertuo Next, Vertuo Pop and Pop+ Lights
These three share one light language, printed with its colours in the combined Vertuo manual:
| Light | Meaning |
|---|---|
| No light | Machine off (auto-off after 2 minutes) |
| Steady white | Ready |
| White blinking once a second | Brewing |
| White pulsing up, then off | Heating up |
| White blinking twice a second | Software update |
| Orange blinking twice a second | Cleaning mode |
| Orange blinking three times a second | Descaling or emptying |
| Orange fading to off, then on again | Cooling down after overheating |
| Orange blinking twice quickly, then long off | Error |
| Orange on 1.5 s, off 0.5 s | Water tank is empty |
| Orange blinking 5 times in 10 seconds | Factory reset done |
| Orange and white alternating 3 times, then steady | Descaling alert |
Orange 2 Blinks, Then Off (Error)
This is the one Vertuo pattern Nespresso calls an error. The troubleshooting row for a light blinking "2 blinks and 1 pause" with the machine stopped gives these steps:
- Unlock the lever and open the head. Check there's a fresh, undamaged capsule in the correct position.
- Close the head and turn the lever to LOCKED.
- Check the water tank is filled.
- If it's mid-descale, mid-clean or emptying, check the capsule has been ejected and the lever is locked.
- Still blinking? Unlock and open the head, replace the capsule if needed, unplug for 10 seconds, plug back in, close the head, press the button to turn it on, then press again to brew.
If it persists after that, Nespresso's instruction is to call them. The Vertuo capsule not recognized guide helps if it keeps failing on the same capsules.
Orange Fading In and Out (Overheating)
The machine is cooling down after heavy use. Hold the button 3 seconds to switch it off, press it again to turn it back on, and wait about 20 minutes. It isn't broken, and it'll brew again once it's cooled.
Orange 3 Blinks Then Steady (Descale Due)
On the Pop+ this reads as "blinking orange 3 times before steady white". You can keep brewing for a little while, but only "a few times" after the alert before descaling becomes necessary. Descaling takes about 20 minutes and can't be paused. The full Vertuo sequence, with its two 7-second holds, is in our Vertuo descaling guide.
Seeing red on a Vertuo? Neither Vertuo manual uses red anywhere. The patterns owners describe as a red blink are almost always the orange error or tank-empty rhythms above. Our Vertuo Pop red light guide goes through them, and the Vertuo Next light guide covers the Next.
Vertuo Plus Lights (Green and Orange)
The Vertuo Plus is the odd one out. Its manual section uses green where the Next uses white, and orange only for special functions:
| Light | Meaning |
|---|---|
| No light | Off (auto-off after 9 minutes on the Plus) |
| Steady green | Ready |
| Green blinking once a second | Heating up |
| Green rotating fast | Brewing |
| 2 blinks, then back to steady green | Water tank empty or capsule missing |
| Steady orange | Entering the special functions menu |
| Orange blinking once a second | A special function (cleaning, descaling, emptying) is running |
| 3 orange blinks, then steady green | Factory reset completed |
There's no orange error pattern on the Plus. Orange means you've entered, or are running, a special function. To switch a Plus off, push the lever down for 3 seconds rather than holding the button. For a Plus that won't brew at all, see our Vertuo Plus not working guide.
Pixie, CitiZ and Essenza Mini (OriginalLine)
These machines have two buttons, Espresso and Lungo, and no coloured lights. Their manuals describe three states: blinking while heating (about 25 seconds), steady when ready, and blinking irregularly when something is wrong.
- Irregular blinking means send the machine for repair or call Nespresso. The Pixie manuals add one check first: if you were descaling, exit descaling mode, because a machine left in that mode keeps blinking.
- Both buttons blinking together after a long two-button hold means the machine is in descaling mode. On the Pixie and CitiZ you exit by holding both buttons again (3 seconds; one second on the original EN125 Pixie).
- Both buttons blinking alternately (Pixie) means the emptying cycle is running.
- A red backlight on the original Pixie (EN125) means the water tank is empty or needs cleaning. The 2018 Pixie (BEC430) has no red light.
CitiZ Platinum and Essenza Plus are different. They have a separate descaling alert: blinking means descale soon (level 1), steady means descale now (level 2). All the beverage buttons blinking fast means an error, overheating, or a room below freezing. Wait a few minutes for it to stop; if it doesn't, unplug and replug it, and call Nespresso if it continues.
Our Pixie, CitiZ and Essenza Mini guides cover each machine in full.
Lattissima One and Creatista Alerts
Lattissima One. It has two small alert icons, DESCALING and CLEAN, and its manual says both "shine orange":
| What you see | Meaning |
|---|---|
| Descaling alert orange | Descale the machine |
| Descaling alert blinking orange, Espresso button steady | In descaling mode; press Espresso to start |
| Clean alert orange | Take the milk system apart and wash it |
| Both alerts blinking | You're in the settings menu; hold the milk button 3 seconds to leave |
| All 3 buttons blink fast 3 times | Water tank is empty |
| Coffee and milk buttons flashing alternately | Overheated; let it cool |
| All buttons blink for 10 seconds, then it turns off | Error alarm: needs repair |
Creatista. The Uno uses a descale LED and a steam wand cleaning LED. The Plus and Pro show named messages such as Fill Water Tank, Descale Now and, on the Plus, Machine Error. For a Creatista that's on but has stopped working, the manuals' remedy is to switch it off, wait 60 minutes, and switch it on again. Our Creatista guide covers all three.
Factory Reset, by Family
There is no universal Nespresso reset. Each family has its own sequence, and a sequence borrowed from the wrong family does nothing, or starts something else. These are the ones in the manuals:
| Machine | Factory reset | How it confirms |
|---|---|---|
| Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+ | Plugged in; open and close the head, leave the lever unlocked, then press the button 5 times within 3 seconds | Orange blinks 5 times in 10 seconds |
| Vertuo Plus | Push the lever down 3 seconds, then push the lever and press the button together for 3 seconds | 3 orange blinks, then steady green |
| Essenza Mini, Pixie (2018, BEC430), CitiZ (EN167) | Machine off; hold Lungo for 5 seconds | Lights blink fast 3 times |
| Original Pixie (EN125) | Machine off; hold Lungo and switch the machine on | Not described |
| CitiZ Platinum, Essenza Plus | Machine off; hold Espresso for more than 5 seconds | Factory settings restored |
| Creatista Uno | Machine on; hold Lungo + Ristretto 5 seconds, then press either to confirm | Restarts ready |
| Creatista Plus / Pro | Menu: Settings → Reset → Factory Reset | Plus powers off |
| Lattissima One | Menu mode (milk button 3 seconds), press milk, press again | All buttons blink 3 times |
What a reset does: it restores cup volumes and settings (for example Espresso 40 ml and Lungo 110 ml on the OriginalLine machines). The Lattissima One's version only restores drink volumes. None of these manuals offers a reset as the fix for an error light or a descaling alert. The Inissia's, from Nespresso's help page, is machine off, hold Lungo for 5 seconds (three fast blinks confirm). For Lattissima Touch and Lattissima Pro, we haven't verified a sequence, so none is given here.
Don't mix up the holds. On a Vertuo Next or Pop, 3 seconds turns it off, a 7-second hold (done twice) enters descaling, and 5 quick presses is the reset. On a Pixie or CitiZ, holding both buttons is the descaling entry, not a reset.
When to Contact Nespresso
Unplug it and stop using it if you smell burning, see water pooling under the base, the cord is damaged, or it trips a breaker. Nespresso's manuals say not to open the machine: "Hazardous voltage inside!"
Call Nespresso when:
- A Vertuo still shows the 2-blink error after the unplug-for-10-seconds step
- An OriginalLine machine or Lattissima One blinks irregularly
- A Lattissima One blinks all its buttons for 10 seconds and switches off
- The CitiZ Platinum's fast blinking doesn't stop after unplugging
US: 1-800-562-1465 · Canada: 1-855-325-5781 (printed in Nespresso's US/Canada manuals). Elsewhere, the number is in the "Welcome to Nespresso" folder in the box. Warranty terms vary by machine and maker. For example, the US 2018 Pixie (BEC430) carries a one-year Breville warranty, so check the booklet that came with yours.
Prevention
- Descale when the alert first appears. Vertuos allow only a few more coffees. The Creatista Pro counts down 30 uses and then stops.
- Set the water hardness on machines that have the setting (CitiZ Platinum defaults to the hardest level, 4). It changes how often the alert appears.
- Use Nespresso descaler, not vinegar. The Pixie and CitiZ manuals both warn against other products.
- Keep the tank topped up and seated. It's the most common cause of blinking on every family.
- Empty the capsule container and drip tray daily. A full container stops the lever closing.
- Give it a rest after several drinks in a row if your Vertuo shows the cooling pattern.
- Don't leave it somewhere freezing. The CitiZ Platinum treats a room below 32°F (0°C) as an error, and the manuals say to empty the system before frost.
FAQ
Do Nespresso machines have error codes?
Not the home machines covered here. Their manuals use lights only: colours and blink rhythms on Vertuo, blinking vs steady on the Pixie, CitiZ and Essenza Mini, and named messages on the Creatista Plus and Pro. Text codes like "Error 124" aren't in any of these manuals.
What does a yellow light on a Nespresso mean?
None of these manuals uses yellow. Nespresso's own colours are white, orange and green (plus turquoise for the Pop+'s concentrated-extraction mode). A light that looks yellow is almost always the orange of a Vertuo, so match its blink rhythm to the Vertuo table above.
Why is my Nespresso blinking orange and not brewing?
On a Vertuo Next, Pop or Pop+, check the rhythm. 1.5 seconds on and half a second off means the tank is empty. Two quick blinks then dark is an error: check the capsule and lever, then unplug for 10 seconds. Orange fading in and out means it's cooling, so wait about 20 minutes.
Will a factory reset clear an error light?
No manual offers it for that. Resets restore volumes and settings. An error light clears when its cause is fixed. For a descaling alert, the manuals prescribe a full descale, not a reset. The one documented "fixes itself" pattern is the Vertuo's cooling-down light, which needs time rather than a reset.
Is the Vertuo Plus reset the same as the Vertuo Next's?
No. The Next, Pop and Pop+ use five quick button presses with the lever unlocked. The Plus uses the lever: push it down for 3 seconds, then push the lever and press the button together for 3 seconds. It confirms with three orange blinks, then steady green.
Can I keep brewing with the descaling alert on?
Briefly. The Vertuo manuals allow only a few coffees after the alert. The CitiZ Platinum escalates from a blinking to a steady alert, and the Creatista Uno and Pro lock you out if you ignore it. Descale within a day or two.
