The Arte tamps by hand; the Prestigio tamps with a lever at the grinder and adds a steam heater and a cleaning cycle. Every difference from De'Longhi's manuals.

The Real Difference Is How the Coffee Gets Tamped

Both machines grind fresh beans straight into the portafilter, and both have a steam wand you use by hand. The split is the tamp. On the Arte (EC9155), you grind through a dosing funnel and tamp by hand with the supplied tamper. On the Prestigio (EC9355), you lock the portafilter onto the grinder outlet, it grinds, and you pull a presser lever to tamp without taking the portafilter off.

Everything on this page comes from De'Longhi's own instructions and service data sheets for the two machines, not from spec-sheet marketing. That changes a couple of things you'll read elsewhere. The Prestigio's tamping isn't automatic: grinding starts by itself, but you pull the lever. And neither manual describes the machine weighing your dose. On both, you set the dose with a dial until the tamped coffee reaches a "perfect dose" mark inside the filter basket.

Quick Picks

  • Pick the Arte if you want the simpler machine: fewer lights, one maintenance cycle, and the hands-on routine of tamping yourself.
  • Pick the Prestigio if you'd rather tamp in the grinder with a lever, want a separate steam heater, and don't mind an extra cleaning cycle that uses tabs.
  • Either way, the grinding and dosing routine is the same: dose dial, the basket mark, and grind changes made only while the grinder runs.

La Specialista Arte: Hands-On and Simpler to Look After

The Arte is the more manual of the two. After grinding, you tap the dosing funnel to level the coffee, tamp by hand and lift the funnel off. That's two more steps than the Prestigio, and the quality of the tamp is up to you.

What works in its favor:

  • Fewer things to answer. Its lights cover water, descaling, heating and temperature, and the manual's maintenance is descaling and brushing the grinder outlet and funnel.
  • One maintenance cycle. There's no separate coffee-outlet cleaning routine, and no cleaning tabs to buy.
  • A clear fix for a jammed grinder. De'Longhi's troubleshooting is to turn the selector to 8 and vacuum the hopper empty.

What to weigh:

  • Tamping is on you. A heavy or uneven tamp shows up in the shot, and the manual's fix is dose and grind, not the machine.
  • No owner access to the burrs. Worn or blocked burrs go to a service center.
  • One heater handles coffee and steam water.

Common problems and their fixes: the La Specialista Arte troubleshooting guide.

La Specialista Prestigio: The Tamp Happens at the Grinder

The Prestigio keeps the portafilter locked on the grinder outlet from grinding to tamping. You pull the lever down fully, and the manual says you can press twice. Then you keep it down while removing the portafilter. It also tells you more: a tamping light flags a lever out of position, a missed press or a clogged coffee slide.

What works in its favor:

  • No separate tamping step. The press happens at the outlet, and pre-ground coffee can be pressed the same way.
  • A separate steam heater. De'Longhi's service sheet lists a coffee thermoblock and a steamer, each with its own heating element.
  • You can reach the upper burr. The manual shows it lifting out by a handle for cleaning. None of the Magnifica or Dinamica manuals we've read offer that.
  • A My button to save drink sizes.

What to weigh:

  • More maintenance. On top of descaling, the orange cleaning light asks for a coffee-outlet cleaning cycle with a cleaning tab, bought separately.
  • More lights to learn. Tamping, bean container and cleaning lights all mean something specific.
  • More moving parts at the outlet. The tamping station needs brushing: the presser cylinder, the attachment area and the coffee funnel.

What Each One Asks of You in Maintenance

This is where the two differ most, and it's the part spec comparisons skip.

Both use the same descaler routine: one 100 ml packet of De'Longhi descaler to level A, then water to level B (1 liter). Both manuals warn that other descalers can cause faults the guarantee doesn't cover.

Reliability: What the Manuals Say Can Go Wrong

Their troubleshooting tables overlap heavily. Both list the same causes for no espresso: an empty tank, a blocked filter, closed tank valves, too fine a grind or too much coffee, and scale. Both say an espresso boiler gasket that has lost its elasticity should be replaced by Customer Services, and that worn burrs are replaced by a service center.

The Prestigio's table has more rows because it has more parts that can be out of place: the lever, the bean container lock and a coffee slide that can clog. The upside is that its manual gives owners more to fix themselves, including clearing foreign matter from the burrs. The Arte has fewer ways to stop, and fewer things an owner can reach when it does.

FAQ

Does the Prestigio tamp automatically?

Not quite. It grinds automatically once the portafilter is locked on the grinder outlet, but you tamp by pulling the presser lever down. The manual's tamping light reminds you when a press is needed.

Does the Prestigio have Sensor Grinding that weighs the dose?

Its manual doesn't describe one. You set the dose with the coffee dose dial until the tamped coffee reaches the mark in the basket, the same way as on the Arte. De'Longhi's service sheet does list a coffee-beans sensor, which fits the Prestigio's beans-empty warning.

Which is easier to keep clean?

The Arte has less to do: descaling plus brushing the grinder outlet and funnel. The Prestigio adds a coffee-outlet cleaning cycle with a tab and more parts to brush at the tamping station. In return, it lets you lift out the upper burr.

Can I add a tamping station to an Arte later?

De'Longhi doesn't offer one. On the Prestigio, the tamping station is part of the grinder outlet and presser lever, and the Arte's manual has no equivalent part.

Are the drip trays different?

Not in a way that matters for cleaning. Both manuals have you remove the drip tray to empty it, and both cleaning charts allow the tray and grilles in the dishwasher.

Which is the better first espresso machine?

We'd pick the one whose routine you'll actually keep up. The Arte asks you to tamp well and has little else to maintain. The Prestigio takes the tamp to the grinder but asks for an extra cleaning cycle and brushing of its tamping station.
