ADD BEANS with a full hopper, TAMP, RINSE or an Er code? The Pro's ten on-screen notifications decoded from Ninja's guide, plus grinder, froth and leak fixes.

The Luxe Café Pro Usually Tells You What's Wrong

A Ninja Luxe Café Pro (ES700 series, ES701) that stops mid-drink usually spells out the reason on its control panel. Ninja's owner's guide lists ten on-screen notifications, from ADD WATER and ADD BEANS to INSTALL HOPPER and TAMP, and each one has a short fix. Read the word, do what it asks, and press START BREW to carry on.

That's the big difference from the original Luxe Café. The original's guide lists no display messages at all, while the Pro's guide gives each notification its own remedy. The Pro also has an integrated tamper lever, a hot water button and a TEMP/STRENGTH button. So if a fix written for the original Luxe Café doesn't match what your panel shows, that's why.

This page follows Ninja's ES700 Series Owner's Guide (UK edition, ES701UK). The US ES701 belongs to the same series, but check your own guide for its phone number and warranty terms.

Try This First

  • Read the panel. A word like ADD WATER, INSTALL PORTAFILTER or TAMP is the machine telling you the next step (Fix 1).
  • Look in the bean hopper. ADD BEANS with beans still in the hopper has its own fix (Fix 2).
  • Check the reservoir is above the min line and pushed firmly onto the back. A loose reservoir appears in five of the guide's troubleshooting rows.
  • Dead machine? Plug it into a working socket and press POWER. It also switches itself off after 20 minutes to save power.
  • CLEAN or DESCALE button lit? Those are two different cycles (Fix 6).

Fix 1: Do What the Notification Asks (Works About 30% of the Time)

Most stops on a Luxe Café Pro are the machine waiting for you, not a fault. Ninja calls these "intelligent notifications", and the guide gives each one an action:

NotificationWhat to do
ADD WATERAdd fresh water and press START BREW to resume. If the reservoir already has water, remove it, reseat it firmly, then press START BREW
INSTALL PORTAFILTERSit the portafilter flat in the grinding cradle and push it all the way back. Brush out any grounds in the cradle. Still showing? Unplug the machine and plug it back in
INSTALL HOPPERTurn the hopper handle clockwise to lock it. If that fails, unlock it (counterclockwise), lift the hopper off, clear any beans sitting on top of the grinder, reseat it firmly and lock it again
INSTALL JUGPut the milk jug on its platform. The bottom of the jug and the platform must be clean and dry
TAMPPush the integrated tamper lever down firmly until it stops, release it and tamp a second time. Do this for every espresso drink and for L+ and XL coffee. For smaller coffees, just shake the portafilter to level the grounds
RINSETake the portafilter out of the group head, put a cup of at least 355 ml (12 oz) underneath and press START BREW. About 250 ml rinses through to bring the temperature down for a cold drink
PURGEPress PURGE with the steam wand down. If the machine ran out of water, it won't purge until you add water and press PURGE

Time: 1-2 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 30%
Difficulty: Easy

Pro tip: brew all your cold drinks before the hot ones, and you'll never see RINSE.

Fix 2: ADD BEANS With a Full Hopper (Works About 25% of the Time)

If the hopper has beans but the panel says ADD BEANS, the beans aren't reaching the grinder. Ninja's remedy is specific: unplug the machine and gently push the beans down toward the burrs.

Signs it's this one: ADD BEANS with a hopper that clearly has beans in it, or no grounds come out when you press START GRIND.

  1. Unplug the machine.
  2. Push the beans in the hopper gently down toward the burrs.
  3. Check the hopper is seated and locked (handle turned clockwise).
  4. Lift the portafilter out of the grinding cradle and put it back level, pushed all the way in.
  5. Brush out anything sitting inside the grinding cradle with the cleaning brush.
  6. Plug in, press POWER and press START GRIND.

If it still won't grind, clean the burrs:

  1. With the machine off and unplugged, empty the beans. To clear what's left, the guide has you hold START GRIND with the portafilter and funnel in the cradle before you unplug.
  2. Lift the hopper handle and turn the hopper counterclockwise to remove it.
  3. Turn the upper burr counterclockwise until its orange arrow lines up with the orange ALIGN arrow, then lift it out.
  4. Brush both burrs and the inside of the grinding cradle. The chute cover comes off for cleaning.
  5. Keep the burrs away from water. Ninja says to clean the fixed burr with the cleaning brush only.
  6. Refit the burr and hopper, and lock the hopper.

Time: 5-15 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy
Tools: the supplied cleaning brush

Common mistake: putting cold or frozen beans in the hopper. Ninja names them, along with debris, as a cause of a loud grinder. Use whole beans at room temperature.

Fix 3: Correct the Grind, Tamp and Water (Works About 15% of the Time)

Ninja's espresso flow rows come down to the grind, the tamp, a clogged basket, the water in the tank and scale. The Pro's Barista Assist Technology suggests a grind on the panel (from 1, the finest, to 25, the coarsest), and most flow problems start with a current setting that doesn't match it.

Signs it's this one:

  • No water comes through, or it only trickles: grind too fine, basket clogged, or not enough water
  • The shot gushes and has no crema: grind too coarse or tamped too lightly
  1. Check the water. The Luxe basket needs 533 ml in the reservoir. For the single or double basket, fill at least to the min line. Push the reservoir firmly onto the back.
  2. Let a bad shot finish rather than stopping it. Then turn the grind dial so CURRENT matches RECOMMENDED before the next shot. With new beans, it can take 2-3 brews to settle.
  3. Tamp twice with the lever, firmly until it stops.
  4. Clean the basket so none of the holes is blocked.
  5. Wait for heat-up if you've just switched on: the guide lists warming up as a cause of no water.
  6. Descale if none of that helps (Fix 6).

Time: 5-10 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 15%
Difficulty: Easy

Model note: after a grind, the machine locks in that drink style and size. To change your mind, tip out the grounds, switch the machine off and on, and choose again.

If the coffee comes out fine but lukewarm, preheat the cup and portafilter and raise the temperature: hold TEMP/STRENGTH for 3 seconds to reach TEMP, then pick high (three dots). Over ice, cold brew and cold-pressed drinks have no temperature setting.

Fix 4: Frothing Won't Start or the Milk Isn't Hot (Works About 10% of the Time)

The frother has its own short list in the guide, and most of it is about water, heat and the jug. Milk that comes out cold is often just the wrong setting: COLD FOAM, the setting with a snowflake, never heats.

  1. Give it a moment after switching on. Frothing waits until the machine reaches operating temperature.
  2. Water above the min line, and the reservoir firmly seated.
  3. Jug on the platform with the steam wand down inside it, and milk at least to the min line (never over max). The whisk must be installed.
  4. Pick a heated style: Steamed Milk, Thin, Thick or Extra-Thick (on some models). Set DAIRY or PLANT-BASED with MILK TYPE.
  5. Clear the wand tip if the milk is still cool or the steam weak: use the needle under the cap of the cleaning brush, or take the tip off with the wrench in the brush and clean inside it. Then purge.
  6. Raise the froth temperature: hold SIZE for 3 seconds, turn to _h06 Froth Temperature, and choose HI.

Time: 2-10 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

⚠️ Safety: the wand and jug get very hot. Don't touch the wand while it's working. Let it cool before taking the tip off.

Fix 5: Stop Leaks and Espresso Around the Portafilter (Works About 10% of the Time)

Some water in the drip tray is by design. The Pro bypasses a little water into the tray during every brew to keep the pressure right, and it purges the steam wand into the tray after every froth. Ninja says the tray holds the bypass from about six cappuccinos. Real leaks come from a full tray, a loose reservoir, a misaligned portafilter or a worn seal.

  1. Empty the drip tray when the orange empty indicator rises into view. Don't brew or froth without it in place.
  2. Push the reservoir firmly onto the back of the machine.
  3. Seat the portafilter properly: line up its orange dot with the orange dot on the group head, then turn it until the dot reaches the lock arrow.
  4. Wipe grounds off the basket rim before fastening.
  5. Still leaking around the portafilter with the handle fully tight? The group head seal (the rubber gasket) may need replacing. The troubleshooting rows say to contact Ninja Customer Service. The UK guide's maintenance page also shows owners how to change it: machine off and unplugged, remove the central screw and shower screen with a Phillips screwdriver, ease the gasket out with a flat-head screwdriver, check it and fit a genuine Ninja replacement, then refit the screen.

Time: 2-20 minutes
Cost: Free, or the price of a Ninja gasket
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy (gasket: Moderate)
Tools: Phillips and flat-head screwdrivers, for the gasket

⚠️ Safety: never take the portafilter out mid-brew; the guide warns it's under pressure. Switch off, unplug and let the group head cool before you touch the shower screen.

Fix 6: Run the Cycle That's Lit (Works About 10% of the Time)

The CLEAN and DESCALE buttons light up when their cycle is due. They're separate cycles with separate buttons, so run the one that's lit. Ninja warns that skipping a descale lets drink quality drop, and that "the machine may clog and stop working".

CLEAN (about 6 minutes):

  1. Empty the drip tray and fill the reservoir to Max.
  2. Put the double basket in the portafilter, the cleaning disc on top (handle up) and one cleaning tablet in the centre of the disc.
  3. Fasten the portafilter, press CLEAN, then press the centre dial. The machine backflushes the group head into the drip tray.
  4. Wash the portafilter and drip tray afterwards.

DESCALE (about 90 minutes):

  1. Empty the drip tray.
  2. Dissolve Ninja descale powder in 1.1 L of water and pour it into the reservoir, or pour in 500 ml of white vinegar and top up with water to the Descale line.
  3. Fasten the portafilter with the double basket, put the milk jug on its platform with the wand inside, and set a cup of at least 550 ml under the portafilter.
  4. Press DESCALE, then the centre dial. A countdown shows the time left.
  5. Afterwards, wash the portafilter, drip tray and jug. Refill with fresh water, brew an M+ CLASSIC to flush the group head, then press PURGE with the jug removed.

Time: 6 or 90 minutes
Cost: Free with the included tablets and powder; vinegar costs little
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

When DIY Won't Work

Contact Ninja if:

  • The panel shows "Er" and a number (for example Er 03). Ninja's guide gives no meanings, only one instruction: contact Customer Service. There's no reset to clear it.
  • The grinder won't run with beans in the hopper after Fix 2, or it stays loud after you've cleared debris.
  • No hot water or froth comes out at all, with a full, seated reservoir.
  • Leaks continue with an empty tray, seated reservoir and a fully tightened portafilter.

Stop using it if the cord or plug is damaged, if it's been dropped, or if water is pooling under the machine.

Warranty: the UK guide's guarantee is one year, or two years if you register within 28 days. US owners should check the guide that came with their ES701. Repairs or alterations by anyone other than Ninja or its agents aren't covered. The settings menu does have a Factory Settings Reset (_h05), but Ninja describes it as resetting the machine's settings, not as a fix for a fault.

Keep It Running

  • Empty the portafilter and wash the basket after each use, by hand.
  • Wipe and purge the steam wand after every froth.
  • Empty the drip tray when the orange indicator shows.
  • Brew cold drinks before hot ones to skip RINSE.
  • Match the grind to the recommended setting, and tamp twice.
  • Run CLEAN and DESCALE as soon as they light up.
  • Change the water filter when its month dial comes round, and set the hardness (_h07) from the test strip.

FAQ

What does ADD BEANS mean when the hopper is full?

The beans aren't reaching the grinder. Ninja's fix is to unplug the machine and gently push the beans down toward the burrs. Check the hopper is locked and the portafilter is flat in the grinding cradle, then press START GRIND again.

Why does my Luxe Café Pro say RINSE?

You picked a cold drink straight after a hot one. With the portafilter out, put a cup of at least 355 ml under the group head and press START BREW. About 250 ml of water runs through to cool it. Brew cold drinks first to avoid it.

What does Er 03 mean on a Ninja Luxe Café Pro?

Ninja doesn't say. The Luxe Café Pro guide covers every "Er" code with one instruction: contact Customer Service. Neither Luxe Café guide decodes an Er number, so be wary of sites that do.

Can I use vinegar to descale the Luxe Café Pro?

Yes. The guide gives two options: Ninja descale powder dissolved in 1.1 L of water, or 500 ml of white vinegar topped up with water to the Descale line. Either way, the cycle takes about 90 minutes.

Can I wash the grinder burrs?

No. Ninja says the burrs must not come into contact with water. Lift out the upper burr at the ALIGN mark and brush both burrs and the grinding cradle with the cleaning brush.

Why is there always water in the drip tray?

It's normal. The machine sends some water to the tray during every brew to keep the pressure right, and it purges the steam wand there after each froth. Empty it when the orange indicator shows.
