All sizes flashing, no Pods or Grounds light, or water under the machine? Ninja's own fixes for the PB051, PB041ST and PB040, from needles to the drip stop.

The Pods & Grounds Has to See Your Filter or Adapter First

A Ninja Pods & Grounds (PB051, PB041ST, PB040) won't brew until its Smart Sensing sees what's in the brew basket: the Pod Adapter for K-Cups or the Permanent Filter for grounds, with the lid shut. If neither the Pods nor the Grounds indicator lights, that's the problem. Reseat the part with its handle lined up with the brew basket handle, and close the lid firmly.

The other two things that stop this machine are a clogged needle and scale. Ninja's guide links both to one sign: every size on the panel flashing. Leaks have their own short list, and most of them come down to the drip stop, the nozzle or an overflowing basket. (The Ninja Specialty carafe brewer works differently: see our Ninja Specialty Coffee Maker guide.)

Everything here comes from Ninja's PB040/PB050 Series Owner's Guide, which covers the PB040, PB041ST, PB051 and their colour variants.

Try This First

  • Look at the Pods and Grounds indicators. If neither is lit, the adapter or filter isn't seated, or the lid isn't shut (Fix 1).
  • All the sizes flashing? Check the needles, then descale (Fix 2).
  • Push the reservoir down firmly onto its base. Ninja's fix for an unstable reservoir is exactly that.
  • Dripping after a brew? Open the lid to pop up the brew basket. That engages the drip stop (Fix 3).
  • Orange clean light? A descale is due (Fix 5).

Fix 1: Seat the Pod Adapter or Permanent Filter (Works About 25% of the Time)

The machine decides whether you're brewing pods or grounds by what's in the brew basket. Ninja's guide lists three states: Pods (adapter inserted, lid shut), Grounds (Permanent Filter inserted, lid shut), and No State, which it explains as "one of the above criteria has not been met".

Signs it's this one: neither indicator lights, and the machine won't start a brew.

  1. Open the lid. Check the brew basket is in place.
  2. For pods: put the Pod Adapter in the basket with its handle lined up with the basket's handle, and press down firmly until it clicks.
  3. For grounds: take the Pod Adapter out first, then put the Permanent Filter in with its handle lined up. It lives in the adapter storage bin on the right of the machine.
  4. Close the lid firmly. With a pod, you'll feel resistance and hear a click as the needle pierces it.
  5. Check the matching indicator lights, then choose style and size and press Brew.

Time: 1 minute
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy

Two things the guide rules out: reusable K-Cup filters don't work with the Ninja Pod Adapter, and you should never use a paper filter in this machine.

Fix 2: Clear the Needles When Every Size Flashes (Works About 25% of the Time)

When all the sizes on the control panel flash, Ninja's guide says there are either grounds built up inside the top needle or calcium scale in the brew system. The same guide names clogged needles as the cause of inconsistent brews and an "add water" error, so this fix covers those too.

  1. Check the pod. Open the lid and look at the used pod: are both the top and the bottom pierced?
  2. Not pierced? Put in a new pod and press it down with your fingers until the bottom needle punctures it, then close the lid. If a new pod still won't pierce, contact Customer Service.
  3. Pierced? Look inside the top and bottom needles. If you can see grounds, clear them with a paper clip or similar flat wire or plastic clip.
  4. Clean the needle in the Pod Adapter the same way.
  5. Restart: power the machine off and on, then run a water-only 12 oz brew to flush it.
  6. No grounds in the needles? Then it's scale: run a clean cycle straight away (Fix 5).

Time: 5-10 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy
Tools: a paper clip

⚠️ Safety: the needles are sharp. Let the machine cool, and keep your fingers clear of the needle when you clean it.

Fix 3: Stop Leaks and Drips (Works About 20% of the Time)

Ninja's guide sorts leaks by where the water appears. Only one location means a fault you can't fix yourself.

Where the water isWhat Ninja says
A few drops in the reservoir valve after lifting the reservoir offNormal: wipe it with a dry cloth
Above the brew basketThe basket overflowed (Fix 4)
Below the brew basket, after brewingLift the lid to engage the drip stop
Behind the nozzleClean the nozzle
Several streams from the nozzleResidue in the nozzle: clean it
The bottom of the machineCall Customer Service

To clean the nozzle: pinch its sides and pull it out of the machine, then wash it by hand or in the dishwasher. Ninja says residue left in the nozzle "may cause overflow". Push it firmly back in place afterwards.

Dripping after every brew? On this machine the drip stop works with the lid: open the lid when the brew finishes, and the brew basket pops up to stop the drips.

Reservoir wobbling? Press it down firmly into its base, as Ninja's guide says to.

Time: 2-5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 4: Stop the Brew Basket Overflowing (Works About 10% of the Time)

Ninja's guide names two blockages and two coffee problems behind an overflowing basket: a clogged basket bottom or nozzle, coffee ground too fine, too many scoops, and decaf, which drains more slowly.

  1. Clean the nozzle (Fix 3) and rinse the brew basket and Permanent Filter.
  2. Use medium-ground coffee.
  3. Measure with the Smart Scoop: 2-3 scoops for 6-12 oz, 3-5 for 14-18 oz, 5-7 for 24 oz, and 4 for a Specialty brew.
  4. Use one scoop less for decaf, and one less again if a brand still overflows.
  5. Always use the Permanent Filter for grounds: never put coffee straight into the brew basket, and never add a paper filter.

Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 5: Run the 75-Minute Clean Cycle (Works About 10% of the Time)

The Intelligent Clean Cycle indicator lights orange when scale is affecting the coffee or the machine. The clean cycle is the descale, and Ninja says it must run with vinegar or descaler: cancel it partway and the machine "will not be properly descaled".

Tools: white vinegar (or a descaler made for coffee makers), and a bowl or saucepan that holds at least 56 oz, about 2 quarts.

  1. Put the Permanent Filter or Pod Adapter in the basket with no grounds or pod, and close the lid.
  2. Lift out the adjustable cup tray and put the large bowl under the nozzle.
  3. Pour 16 oz of white vinegar into the reservoir, then top up with water to MAX.
  4. Press CLEAN, then press BREW. It runs for about 75 minutes, with long pauses. That's normal.
  5. At the end it beeps and the orange light goes off.
  6. Empty the bowl, wash the reservoir in warm soapy water, refill to the 24 oz line, and run a water-only 24 oz Classic brew to flush it.
  7. Orange light still on? Ninja says a second cycle may be needed, especially in hard-water areas.

Time: About 90 minutes, including the flush
Cost: A few dollars of white vinegar
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 6: Run the High-Altitude Calibration (Works About 5% of the Time)

Water boils at a lower temperature at altitude. Ninja says skipping its high-altitude calibration in a high-altitude area "will result in excessive steaming during brewing".

  1. Fill the reservoir to MAX, put the brew basket in, and close the lid.
  2. Put a 24 oz cup or travel mug under the nozzle.
  3. Power on, then hold BREW and CLEAN together until you hear a confirmation sound.
  4. The progress bar runs until it's done, then the machine beeps. Pour the water away.

Time: About one brew
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 5%
Difficulty: Easy

The calibration is saved permanently, even through power cuts. Pods at altitude: before closing the lid, press the pod down with your fingers until the exit needle pierces its bottom. Ninja says this releases built-up gas and prevents the pod from blowing out.

When DIY Won't Work

Call Ninja Customer Service (1-877-646-5288) if:

  • The panel shows an error state: a single size number lit with dashes across the panel. The guide pictures it for every size and gives one instruction: call. There's no published meaning or reset.
  • Water leaks from the bottom of the machine.
  • A new pod won't pierce with the lid fully closed.
  • All sizes keep flashing after you've cleared the needles and run a full clean cycle.

Warranty: Ninja gives a one-year limited warranty in North America for the original owner. Claims are made by phone with your receipt. SharkNinja pays to have the unit sent in and charges a $20.95 fee to ship the repaired or replacement unit back (subject to change).

Keep It Running

  • Clear the needles with a paper clip whenever brews get inconsistent.
  • Clean the nozzle regularly, so residue doesn't cause overflow or split streams.
  • Throw away pods after they cool, so water doesn't collect in the brew basket.
  • Fill with cool or room-temperature water only, never hot.
  • Wash the reservoir in the dishwasher: Ninja suggests the bottom rack, upright, opening down.
  • Run the clean cycle whenever the orange light comes on.

FAQ

Why does my Ninja Pods & Grounds keep dripping after brewing?

The drip stop isn't engaged. On this model it works with the lid: open the lid when the brew finishes and the brew basket pops up, which stops the dripping. Ninja's guide gives this as the fix for coffee that keeps dripping after a brew.

Can I use a reusable K-Cup filter in the Ninja Pod Adapter?

No. Ninja's guide says reusable K-Cup coffee filters aren't compatible with the Ninja Pod Adapter. For your own coffee, remove the adapter and use the Permanent Filter instead, which is made for grounds.

Can I use paper filters in the Ninja Pods & Grounds?

No. The guide says not to use a paper filter in this coffee maker. Use the Permanent Filter that comes with it, and never put grounds straight into the brew basket.

Why is there water left in the reservoir?

It's normal. Ninja leaves some water behind so the reservoir never runs dry, which protects the pump and brew system. It happens even when you fill the reservoir to the line for the size you brew.

Why is my Over Ice coffee not cold?

Fill the cup to the top with ice before you brew. The machine brews hot on purpose and relies on the ice to chill it, so a half-full cup of ice gives you warm coffee.

How long does a Ninja Pods & Grounds clean cycle take?

About 75 minutes, plus a water-only 24 oz flush afterwards. Use 16 oz of white vinegar topped up with water to MAX, and a bowl that holds at least 56 oz. Don't cancel it partway.
