Carafe side won't brew, the wrong side runs, or coffee spills onto the base? The Scoop 2-Way Brewer's lever, carafe and cleaning fixes, from Hamilton Beach's guide.

Check the Lever Before Anything Else

The Hamilton Beach Scoop 2-Way Brewer (49980A) brews on one side at a time, and a lever picks which one: push it left for single-serve, right for the carafe. If the lever points at the other side, water heads there instead, and the side you're watching does nothing. Set the lever, check that side's own reservoir has water, and press I/O.

If the lever is right and the carafe side still won't start, Hamilton Beach's guide points first at the carafe: the coffee maker won't brew unless the carafe is sitting on the keep-hot plate. Slow brewing, overflow and coffee on the base have short, specific lists of their own, and none of them involves taking the machine apart.

This page follows Hamilton Beach's own Use & Care Guide for The Scoop 2-Way Brewer. The copy on Hamilton Beach's document site is the China-market edition (model 49980-CN). Its English section describes the same lever, the one-side-at-a-time rule, the timer, BOLD and the 2-hour shutoff as the US 49980A, but check your own guide for anything regional. If your machine takes K-Cup pods on its single-serve side, it's a FlexBrew instead: see our Hamilton Beach FlexBrew guide.

Try This First

  • Look at the lever. Left = single-serve, right = carafe. Set it before you press I/O.
  • Fill the right reservoir. Each side has its own. Water in the single-serve reservoir won't brew a carafe.
  • Seat the carafe on the keep-hot plate, lid on. A missing carafe is the first cause in Hamilton Beach's "not brewing" row.
  • Dead after a power cut or surge? Unplug it, plug it back in, and reset the clock.
  • Is the program light on? A green LED means the timer is set and waiting (Fix 6).

Fix 1: Set the Lever to the Side You're Brewing (Works About 25% of the Time)

The lever decides which side brews. Hamilton Beach's guide is clear that the unit "will only brew on one side at a time", so the lever has to match the side you want before you start.

Signs it's this one: the machine runs but nothing comes out where you expect, or water appears on the other side.

  1. Press I/O to stop any brew in progress.
  2. Push the lever left for single-serve or right for the carafe, all the way across.
  3. Make sure that side's reservoir has water, and its basket has coffee.
  4. Press I/O to start.

Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy

If the lever is fully on one side and water still comes out of the other basket, the selector inside isn't switching. That's a service job: Hamilton Beach says not to remove the bottom cover and not to take the unit apart. Call Hamilton Beach (see When DIY Won't Work below).

Fix 2: Get the Carafe Side Brewing (Works About 25% of the Time)

Hamilton Beach's troubleshooting table lists six causes for "Coffee not brewing or unit will not turn on", and five of them take seconds to check.

  1. Put the carafe on the keep-hot plate, with its lid attached. This is the first cause the guide lists.
  2. Fill the carafe-side reservoir. Pour water from the carafe, no higher than the 12-cup mark (60 oz / 1.8 L).
  3. Check it's plugged in and the outlet works. A power outage stops it too.
  4. After a power surge, unplug it, then plug it back in. That's the guide's only reset.
  5. Reset the clock after an outage. It also has to be set before you program a brew.
  6. Check the brew basket is fully seated in its well.

Time: 2 minutes

Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy

Not a fault: the carafe side switches itself off 2 hours after a brew, and the single-serve side as soon as its cup is done. Press I/O to start again.

Fix 3: Clean Out Mineral Deposits (Works About 20% of the Time)

When brewing takes longer than it used to, Hamilton Beach's guide names one cause: mineral deposits building up in the pump. Its cure is a vinegar clean through each side, and it recommends cleaning at least once a month, or once a week in hard-water areas. Deposits are also the guide's "needs cleaning" cause for overflow and slow brewing.

Carafe side:

  1. Pour 1 pint (2 cups, 500 ml) of white vinegar into the carafe-side reservoir, with the empty carafe on the plate and the lever right.
  2. Press I (ON), then O (OFF) after 30 seconds.
  3. Wait 30 minutes, then press I (ON) and let it finish. Press O (OFF) when it's done.
  4. Run 2-3 brew cycles with clean water only, letting it cool between cycles.

Single-serve side:

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of white vinegar and 1/2 cup of cold water into the single-serve reservoir, with a mug in place and the lever left.
  2. Use the same sequence: ON, OFF after 30 seconds, wait 30 minutes, ON, then OFF when it's done.
  3. Run 2-3 water-only cycles, cooling between them.

Time: About 1 hour per side, with rinses
Cost: A few dollars of white vinegar
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 4: Stop Carafe-Side Overflow and Leaks onto the Base (Works About 15% of the Time)

Hamilton Beach puts "brew basket overflows", "brews slowly" and "coffee leaks onto base" in one row, because they share causes: too much coffee for the water to drain through, a filter that lets grounds around it, or a carafe that was lifted away mid-brew.

  1. Measure one level tablespoon per cup. Use slightly less for decaf or flavored coffee.
  2. Use an automatic-drip grind, not fine. Coffee ground too finely can overflow the basket.
  3. Using a paper filter? Rinse the brew basket first so the filter's edges stay pressed to the sides, open the filter fully, and keep grounds from getting between it and the basket. A poor-quality filter can also cause trouble.
  4. Don't lift the carafe off the plate for more than 20 seconds during brewing. The guide lists that as a cause of overflow and coffee on the base.
  5. If none of that applies, clean it (Fix 3).

Grounds in your cup? For the carafe side, Hamilton Beach suggests a high-quality basket-style paper filter instead of the permanent filter.

Fix 5: Measure the Single-Serve Side Properly (Works About 10% of the Time)

The single-serve side brews whatever water you put in its reservoir, so the guide's main overflow cause is simply too much water. Its fix is to measure with the cup itself.

  1. Fill the single-serve reservoir using the mug or travel mug you'll brew into. Never use more than 14 oz (410 ml): Hamilton Beach gives that as a burn-hazard limit.
  2. Push the mug fully under the basket.
  3. Fill the Scoop basket to the right mark: the lower mark for 8 oz (250 ml), the higher for 14 oz (410 ml). For regular coffee, use a maximum of two level tablespoons, and keep it below MAX. Hamilton Beach warns that filling the scoop to the top causes overflow.
  4. Weak cup? The guide's only cause is not enough grounds.

Time: 1 minute
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

For a hotter cup: rinse the travel mug with warm water first, then brew straight into it with the lid on, as the guide suggests.

Fix 6: Program the Timer Correctly (Works About 5% of the Time)

The timer works for either side, but only after it's been activated. The last step is easy to miss.

  1. Set the clock with HOUR and MINUTE.
  2. Hold PROGRAM until the clock flashes.
  3. Keep holding PROGRAM and set the start time with HOUR and MINUTE, then release.
  4. Press PROGRAM again to activate it. A green LED shows it's programmed.
  5. Set the lever, fill that side's reservoir and basket, and put the carafe or mug in place.

Time: 2 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 5%
Difficulty: Easy

BOLD takes longer. If you choose BOLD under BREW OPTIONS, Hamilton Beach says the brew cycle needs extra time. If you don't choose it, the machine brews regular strength.

When DIY Won't Work

Call Hamilton Beach (US customer service: 1-800-851-8900) if:

  • Water comes out of the wrong side with the lever pushed fully across
  • The machine won't turn on after you've checked the outlet, unplugged and replugged it
  • Brewing stays slow after a full vinegar clean on that side
  • The display shows a code. The guide doesn't list any error codes, so there's nothing to look up and no published reset.

Stop using it if the cord is damaged, it has been dropped, or the carafe is cracked or its handle is loose. Hamilton Beach warns not to remove the bottom cover: there are no user-serviceable parts inside.

Keep It Brewing

  • Set the lever first, every time.
  • Measure water with the cup on the single-serve side, and never fill past 14 oz.
  • Use 1 tablespoon per cup on the carafe side, and a little less for decaf.
  • Leave the carafe on the plate until the brew finishes.
  • Clean each side with vinegar monthly, or weekly with hard water.
  • Don't plug it into an outlet timer. Hamilton Beach warns against running it through an external switching device.

FAQ

Can I brew a carafe and a single cup at the same time?

No. Hamilton Beach's guide says the 2-Way Brewer will only brew on one side at a time. Brew one side, then move the lever across, fill that side's reservoir and brew the other.

Why does my Hamilton Beach 2-Way Brewer turn itself off?

It's designed to. The single-serve side shuts off as soon as the brew cycle finishes, and the carafe side shuts off 2 hours after brewing. Press I/O to start it again.

What does E01 mean on a Hamilton Beach 2-Way Brewer?

Hamilton Beach's Use & Care Guide for the 2-Way Brewer doesn't list any error codes, so there's no published meaning for E01. Check the lever, water, carafe and power first. If a code stays on the display, call Hamilton Beach rather than following an unofficial reset.

Can I use paper filters in the 2-Way Brewer?

On the carafe side, yes. The guide allows a cupcake-style paper filter instead of the permanent filter, and suggests a basket-style paper filter if you get sediment in your cup. Rinse the basket first so the filter sits flat against it.

How much coffee goes in the single-serve scoop?

No more than two level tablespoons of regular coffee, kept below the MAX line. Fill to the lower mark for an 8 oz cup and the higher mark for 14 oz. Use slightly less for decaf or flavored coffee to avoid overflow.
