COFFEE and TEA icons flashing, Add Wtr, Hot Wtr or CLn on the clock, or coffee overflowing? What the Hot & Cold Brewed System is telling you, and the fix.
Ninja Hot & Cold Brewed System Not Working? 7 Fixes (CP301, CP307)
When It Won't Brew, Check the Filter Holder First
If both the COFFEE and TEA icons are flashing and the Ninja Hot & Cold Brewed System won't start, there's no filter holder in the brew basket. The machine reads which holder is fitted (the orange coffee holder or the green tea holder) and won't brew without one. Fit the right holder, slide the basket in until it clicks, and press START/SELECT.
Most other stops are explained on the clock display. Add Wtr, CLn, Hot Wtr, CnCL and Er each have a specific meaning in Ninja's owner's guide, and only Er sends you to Customer Service. This page follows Ninja's own guide for the CP301 series, plus its Canadian guide for the thermal-carafe CP307C, for the few places the two differ.
It's a different machine from the Ninja Coffee Bar and the DualBrew. If yours takes pods, see our Ninja Pods & Grounds guide or the DualBrew Pro guide instead.
Try This First
- Look at the clock. A word there (Add Wtr, CLn, Hot Wtr, CnCL) tells you exactly what to do. The table below lists them.
- Check the filter holder. COFFEE and TEA both flashing means none is fitted.
- Push the brew basket in until it clicks.
- Fill with cool water, up to the Max Fill line and no higher.
- Check the Drip Stop button. Lit means the drip stop is closed and nothing will flow out of the basket.
What the Display Is Telling You
| On the display | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| COFFEE and TEA both flashing | No filter holder in the brew basket | Fit the coffee or tea holder (Fix 1) |
| Add Wtr | Not enough water to finish the brew | Add water and press START/SELECT to resume (Fix 2) |
| Hot Wtr | Hot water was poured into the reservoir | Empty it, refill with cool water (Fix 2) |
| CLn | Scale in the boiler: clean now | Run a clean cycle before brewing (Fix 3) |
| CLEAN light on | A clean is recommended | Run a clean cycle (Fix 3) |
| CnCL | The brew was cancelled | Press START/SELECT to start again |
| End | Brew, clean or calibration finished | Nothing |
| Er plus a number | A fault with no published meaning | Call Ninja: 1-877-646-5288 |
Fix 1: Fit the Right Filter Holder (Works About 25% of the Time)
The control panel shows coffee or tea settings depending on which filter holder is in the basket. With none fitted, both icons flash and nothing brews. The holders are colour-coded: orange with a coffee bean for coffee, green with a tea leaf for tea.
- Slide the brew basket out.
- Put in the holder for what you're brewing. The coffee holder takes the coffee permanent filter or a #4 paper cone. The tea holder takes the tea permanent filter, which clicks when it's seated properly.
- Add the coffee or tea, using the Smart Scoop measurements.
- Slide the basket back in until it clicks.
- Choose the size with the Multi-Serve dial and the style with START/SELECT, then press the dial to start.

Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy
Brewing tea? Press the Tea button to switch to the tea menu, then pick the tea type with the dial. Ninja's guide suggests the Herbal setting for Rooibos and Black for Pu'erh.
Fix 2: Clear Add Wtr and Hot Wtr (Works About 20% of the Time)
The brewer measures the water it needs for the size and style you choose. Add Wtr means there isn't enough to finish. Hot Wtr means the machine detected hot water in the reservoir.
Add Wtr:
- Add fresh water to the reservoir.
- Press START/SELECT to resume the brew.
- Reservoir already full? Lift it off (up and to the right) and seat it again.
- Still showing? Ninja says to call Customer Service at 1-877-646-5288.
Hot Wtr:
- Take the reservoir off and pour the hot water away.
- Refill it with fresh, cool water and put it back.
- Wait until Hot Wtr disappears from the display before using the machine.
Time: 2 minutes

Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy
Water left in the reservoir after a brew is normal. Ninja says the reservoir markings are minimum fill lines, and the brewer leaves some water behind so it doesn't run dry.
Fix 3: Run the Clean Cycle Properly (Works About 20% of the Time)
The CLEAN light means scale is building up in the boiler, and CLn means it's bad enough that Ninja wants a clean before you brew again. The light only clears when a full clean cycle finishes. Ninja's guide also warns that a water-only cycle won't descale the brewer.
- Select the Full Carafe size, and put the empty carafe under the brew basket.
- Fill the reservoir with one of these:
- A descaling solution made for coffee makers, following its package directions, up to Max Fill (50 oz).
- White vinegar up to the Travel Mug line (16 oz), then water up to Max Fill. Ninja says to use only white vinegar.
- Press CLEAN. The clock counts down about 60 minutes. The pauses are part of the cycle.
- Don't take the carafe out at any point, and don't cancel. A cancelled clean doesn't descale the machine.
- When it beeps and shows End, the CLEAN light goes off. Empty the carafe and wash the reservoir.
- Fill the reservoir with fresh water and run a Full Carafe, Classic brew to flush it.
Time: About 75 minutes, including the flush
Cost: A few dollars for vinegar or descaler
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy
CLEAN light back on straight away? Ninja's guide says you may need a second cycle to clear more mineral buildup. Hard water makes the light come on more often.
Fix 4: Stop Brew Basket Overflows and Leaks (Works About 15% of the Time)
When coffee can't drain out of the filter holder fast enough, it backs up and overflows the basket. Ninja's guide gives three causes, and they're all about what's in the filter.
Signs it's this one: grounds or coffee spilling over the top of the basket, or coffee leaking from above the basket.
- Use a medium grind. Ninja warns that grinding too finely can make the basket overflow.
- Measure with the Smart Scoop. A full carafe takes 4-6 big scoops (8-12 Tbsp). Too much coffee clogs the bottom of the holder.
- Never use a paper filter and the permanent filter together. Ninja says that clogs and backs up the water.
- Use fewer scoops for decaf. It absorbs water differently.
- Clear the bottom of the filter holder if it's clogged, and wash it.
Where's the leak? Ninja's troubleshooting table locates it for you:
- A small drop under the reservoir valve when you lift the reservoir off is normal. Wipe it with a dry cloth.
- Above the brew basket = an overflow (the steps above).
- From the brew basket = check every part is assembled correctly and securely.
- From the bottom of the brewer = call Ninja Customer Service.

Cup or travel mug overflowing instead? The vessel is too small for the size you picked. Ninja's minimums are a 12 oz cup for Cup, 14 oz for XL Cup, a 16 oz travel mug for Travel Mug, and 20 oz for XL Multi-Serve.
Fix 5: Brew Paused Mid-Carafe: Check the Drip Stop (Works About 10% of the Time)
The Drip Stop lets you pull the carafe out mid-brew and pour a cup. While its button is lit, the basket is closed, so nothing comes out. If you forget to reopen it, the machine waits, reminds you, then gives up.
- Put the carafe back and press Drip Stop to continue the brew.
- The machine beeps a reminder after 30 seconds. After 5 minutes, it cancels the brew and shows CnCL.
- Coffee still dripping after a brew? The drip stop closes automatically when a brew ends. Finely ground coffee and decaf can take longer to drain. To keep the drip stop open longer, hold Drip Stop until the display flashes, then choose +15, +30, +45 or +60 seconds (or OFF) with H or M.

Fix 6: Iced and Cold Brew Coming Out Warm (Works About 5% of the Time)
Ninja's guide says the machine brews Over Ice and Cold Brew at elevated temperatures for flavor, and the ice then cools it. Without enough ice, it stays warm.
- Fill the cup, mug or carafe right to the top with ice before you brew. Some melting is normal.
- Never put ice in the reservoir.
- For Cold Brew coffee, add one extra scoop of grounds. A full carafe of Cold Brew takes about 15 minutes.
- For a carafe of Over Ice, use the Ninja carafe. Ninja says other glassware is fine for Cold Brew but not for Over Ice.

Fix 7: Delay Brew, Clock and Excessive Steaming (Works About 5% of the Time)
Three settings catch people out: Delay Brew needs the machine left on, the clock resets after a power cut, and at high altitude the machine needs calibrating.
- Delay Brew didn't start? Ninja says the unit must stay powered on after you set it. Fill the reservoir, fit the holder with coffee, close the basket and place the carafe. Press DELAY BREW, set the time with H and M, and choose the size and style. Then press DELAY BREW again: it beeps and stays lit.
- Changing a setting made it beep and flash? You can't change options while Delay Brew is set. Cancel it with DELAY BREW, then set it again.
- Clock flashing? The time is lost when the brewer is unplugged or after a long power cut. Press H or M to set it.
- Lots of steam while brewing, at altitude? Run Ninja's calibration. Fill the reservoir to Max Fill, put an empty filter holder in the basket and an empty vessel underneath. Then hold Drip Stop and Tea together until a two-minute countdown starts. It beeps and shows End when it's done, and the setting is saved permanently.

CP301 vs CP307: What's Different
| CP301 (glass carafe) | CP307 / CP307C (thermal carafe) | |
|---|---|---|
| Carafe | Glass, dishwasher-safe | Stainless steel thermal carafe, not dishwasher-safe |
| Warming plate | Intelligent Warming Plate, 0-4 h, High or Low (STAY WARM) | None, so no STAY WARM button |
| Priming before first use | One Full Carafe, Classic cycle with water | Two cycles |
| Power | 1550 W | 1500 W (Canadian guide) |
The display messages, clean cycle and frother are the same in both guides. On the CP301, the warming plate comes on by itself for Half or Full Carafe Classic or Rich brews, for 2 hours on High by default. Press STAY WARM after a brew to turn it off. To change the time or temperature, hold STAY WARM.
When DIY Won't Work
Call Ninja Customer Service at 1-877-646-5288 if:
- The display shows Er and a number. Ninja publishes no meanings for them, and no reset.
- Water leaks from the bottom of the brewer
- Add Wtr stays on with a full, reseated reservoir
- The cord or plug is damaged, or the brewer was dropped
Ninja's warranty is one year (limited). It excludes the wearable parts: filter holders, permanent filters, the frother whisk, the carafe and lid, the reservoir and lid, and the scoop. Ninja pays to have the brewer sent in, and charges $20.95 to ship the repaired or replacement unit back. You need the receipt.
Keep It Brewing
- Medium grind, measured scoops, and never a paper filter inside the permanent filter.
- Cool, fresh water only, and nothing else in the reservoir.
- Rinse the reservoir after brewing. Ninja suggests washing it weekly, upside down on the dishwasher's bottom rack.
- Run the clean cycle when CLEAN lights, with descaler or vinegar. Ninja's safety list says to clean the system weekly.
- Use a big enough cup for the size you choose.
FAQ
Does the Ninja Hot & Cold frother heat milk?
No. Ninja's guide says the Integrated Frother doesn't heat milk. For hot froth, microwave the milk in your cup for 45-60 seconds first, filling it about a third full. Then froth for 30-45 seconds with the whisk just below the surface. More in our Ninja frother guide.
Can I use K-Cups in the Ninja Hot & Cold Brewed System?
No. Both owner's guides describe brewing only ground coffee or tea, in the coffee or tea filter holder. For pods, Ninja makes other brewers such as the Pods & Grounds and the DualBrew.
How long should a brew take?
From about 4 minutes to 18 minutes, according to Ninja's guide. Full carafes, Rich and Cold Brew take longer than single cups and Classic. Some brews pause briefly at the start to soak the grounds, which is normal.
Why does my Ninja show "Er 03"?
Ninja doesn't publish meanings for its Er numbers. Its guide says that if the clock shows Er and a number, you should call Customer Service on 1-877-646-5288. There's no published reset for it.
Can I make tea without the tea filter holder?
No. The machine reads the holder to switch between coffee and tea settings, and with no holder it won't brew. You can take the tea permanent filter out of the holder if tea bags need more room, but the green holder itself must be in.
