Quick Fix

No water from your Nespresso? Every manual gives the same short list: the tank, capsule and lever, descaling and the first-use rinse. Vertuo lights decoded.

"No Coffee, No Water": What Nespresso Says

Every Nespresso manual read has the same troubleshooting row, "No coffee, no water", and the same short answer. Fill the water tank and seat it properly. Check the capsule and lock the lever or handle. Descale if it's due. On a new or long-unused machine, run the first-use rinse with warm water (max 55 °C / 131 °F).

Work through those four before suspecting anything else. On a Vertuo, read the light before anything else: a blinking button with no flow can mean the machine is reading the capsule or already running a program. None of the manuals describes an air lock to bleed, a needle to clear or a valve on the tank to free, so this guide skips those.

Try This First

  • Lift the tank out, fill it, and push it back down until it sits fully in place.
  • Eject the capsule and close the lever or head again.
  • Vertuo: note what the light is doing (blinking pattern, colour, steady).
  • OriginalLine: if the button lights blink irregularly, skip to "When to Call Nespresso". That pattern means repair.

Fix 1: Fill and Seat the Water Tank (Works About 30% of the Time)

"Water tank is empty. Fill water tank" is the first line under "No coffee, no water" in the OriginalLine manuals. The Vertuo row starts with "check the tank is filled". A tank that's full but not pushed home can't feed the machine either.

  1. Lift the tank off and fill it with fresh drinking water.
  2. Refit it and press it down until it's fully seated. The Vertuo and Pixie manuals also link "unusual coffee flow" to the tank's position.
  3. Pixie EN125: a red light behind the tank means it's empty.
  4. Vertuo Next, Pop, Pop+: an orange light on 1.5 seconds, off 0.5 seconds means the tank is empty.
  5. Try a cup again.

Fix 2: Check the Capsule and Lock the Lever (Works About 20% of the Time)

The machine won't pump through a capsule it can't use. The Vertuo row asks you to check that "a fresh undamaged capsule is inserted in the correct position" and that the handle is locked.

  1. Vertuo: unlock and open the head, let the capsule eject, insert a fresh one, and lock the handle fully.
  2. 2 blinks and a pause, repeating: check the capsule, handle and tank. If it continues, unplug for 10 seconds, plug back in and try again.
  3. OriginalLine (Pixie, CitiZ, Essenza Mini, Inissia): close the lever completely. The CitiZ manual warns: "Always completely close the lever and never lift it during operation."
  4. Pixie test: "Lift the lever. Press one coffee button and wait until water comes out."

Success Rate: About 20%

Never use a damaged or deformed capsule. The CitiZ manual notes that water can flow around a capsule the blades haven't pierced, and damage the machine.

Fix 3: Read What the Vertuo Is Doing (Works About 15% of the Time)

On the Vertuo Next, Pop and Pop+, the button light tells you whether the machine is waiting, busy or blocked.

  • Blinking, machine not running: "It will take some time before the coffee flow comes out (due to barcode reading and pre-wetting the coffee)." Give it a moment, then check the tank and the lock.
  • Blinking, and only water runs: a cleaning, descaling or emptying program is running. If you didn't mean to start one, push the button to stop it. If it keeps blinking, hold the button for at least 7 seconds to exit descaling.
  • Orange fading in and out: the machine is cooling after overheating. Leave it about 20 minutes.
  • Both rows end the same way: turn the machine off (hold the button 3 seconds), then press it again to switch back on.

Time: 1-20 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 15%
Difficulty: Easy

The Vertuo Plus uses green and orange lights, and its orange means a special function rather than an error. Its full table is in the Vertuo Plus guide.

Fix 4: Run the First-Use Rinse (Works About 10% of the Time)

A machine that's new, or has stood unused, can give no water at first. The OriginalLine manuals answer this in the same row: on first use, fill the tank with warm water, max 55 °C (131 °F), and run the first-use steps.

  1. Fill the tank with warm water, not hotter than 55 °C.
  2. Put a container of at least 1 L under the coffee outlet.
  3. Switch on and wait for the lights to stop blinking (about 25 seconds on the Pixie, CitiZ and Essenza Mini).
  4. CitiZ, Essenza Mini, Inissia: press Lungo three times to rinse.
  5. Then make a coffee with a capsule.

Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 5: Descale (Works About 20% of the Time)

"Descale if necessary" closes the "No coffee, no water" row in every manual. Scale builds up inside until water can barely pass. The CitiZ and Essenza Mini manuals also file "coffee comes out very slowly" under descaling.

  1. Use the Nespresso descaling kit, the agent the manuals specify. The Essenza Mini manual warns the solution can be harmful.
  2. Empty the drip tray and capsule container, and eject the capsule.
  3. Enter your machine's descaling mode:
  4. Run the solution through, refill with the collected solution and run it again, then rinse.

Time: About 15-20 minutes
Cost: A Nespresso descaling kit
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy

When to Call Nespresso

Every manual says to call when:

  • "No coffee, just water runs out (despite inserted capsule)"
  • The OriginalLine lights blink irregularly
  • A Vertuo error keeps returning after the 10-second unplug
  • No water flows after Fixes 1-5 with a full, seated tank

Nespresso warns, "Do not open the appliance. Hazardous voltage inside!" Before sending a machine for repair, the manuals have you run the emptying program; the steps by model are in the Nespresso pump guide.

Keep Water Flowing

  • Keep the tank topped up and seated after every refill.
  • Use fresh capsules, never damaged ones.
  • Descale on your machine's schedule. The Essenza Mini manual gives every 300 cups in hard water, 600 in medium and 1,200 in soft.
  • Before a long break or frost, empty the system as your manual describes.

FAQ

Why does my Nespresso make noise but no water comes out?

Nespresso's answer is the "No coffee, no water" row: an empty or loose tank, the capsule or lever, or scale. On a Vertuo, check whether the light is blinking with only water running: that's a cleaning, descaling or emptying program, not a fault.

Does a Nespresso have an air lock I need to clear?

No Nespresso manual read describes one. The nearest step is the first-use rinse: warm water (max 55 °C) in the tank, then Lungo three times on the CitiZ, Essenza Mini and Inissia.

Why is only water coming out of my Nespresso, with no coffee?

With a capsule in, every manual says the same: call Nespresso. On a Vertuo with no capsule, blinking with only water flowing means a cleaning, descaling or emptying program is running.

Why won't my Nespresso dispense after descaling?

On a Vertuo, the machine may still be in descaling mode. Holding the button for at least 7 seconds exits it. On OriginalLine machines, check you exited the mode as your manual says (Essenza Mini: both buttons again for 5 seconds) and refilled the tank with fresh water.
