Lever-assisted tamping and on-screen dose feedback on the Impress, a wider grind range on the Touch. The BES880 and BES881 compared from Breville's books.

Barista Touch vs Touch Impress: Same Screen, Different Puck

Both are touch-screen Breville machines with a built-in grinder and automatic milk texturing on a drip-tray sensor. The Barista Touch Impress (BES881) adds the Impress puck system: a lever-assisted 10 kg tamp with a 7° twist, and a screen that rates the dose and tamp as low, ideal or high, then corrects the next dose. On the Barista Touch (BES880) you dose and tamp by hand.

Two other differences don't appear in most reviews. The Impress grinder runs 1-25, not 1-30. And its book gives a different answer when the machine stops: wait 60 minutes, not the BES880's 30-60-minute cool-down.

Edition note: the BES881 facts come from Breville's US, Australia/New Zealand and Sage UK/EU books. The BES880 books we used are the Australia/New Zealand and Sage UK editions.

Both use a 54 mm portafilter and 8-11 g / 16-19 g baskets, and both books aim for flow to start at about 8-12 seconds.

The Impress Puck System

  • Tamp: push the lever down to the end position, release slowly, and repeat. "Screen will indicate if tamp or dose is low, ideal or high."
  • Under-dose: the screen offers "A Bit More". Grind again and tamp again; the machine lengthens its auto grind time for next time.
  • Over-dose: trim with the Razor tool, and the machine shortens the next grind.
  • Intelligent Dose can be switched off in Settings → Drink Settings. The US book adds an Intelligent Brew Setup for new beans or when the screen says too fast or too slow.

The book lists what throws the dose off: fresh beans added, beans ageing, a different bean, or a grind change. Expect two to three extractions to calibrate after any of them.

On the BES880, the book's extraction guide does the same job in a table. Flow that starts in 1-7 seconds means grind finer or dose more. Drips, or no flow at all, mean over-extraction: go coarser or dose less.

Milk and Hot Water

Both texture automatically. The jug sits on the milk temperature sensor on the drip tray, with milk covering the ring around the wand tip. Both purge the wand when you lower it.

  • BES880: steam switches itself off after 90 seconds of continuous steaming.
  • BES881: milk options are Dairy, Almond, Oat and Soy. Hot water stops after about 90 seconds. Use only the supplied stainless steel jug: the book warns glass or plastic may overheat the milk.

The BES881 books describe no Wi-Fi or app, and none appears in the BES880's Settings list.

Living With Them: Settings and Care

Both put maintenance in the Settings menu (the icon at the upper right of the screen):

Factory Reset on both deletes custom drinks and returns programmable values to default. The BES880 book offers it as the fix for one cause: "an error on purging setting". The BES881 book gives it for no troubleshooting row.

Water: both books warn against highly filtered, demineralised or distilled water.

When It Stops or Won't Brew

  • BES880, on but stopped: "The safety thermal-cut out may have activated due to the pump or grinder overheating." Switch off, unplug, cool 30-60 minutes, then call Breville.
  • BES881, on but stopped: "Turn machine off. Wait for 60 minutes and turn machine back on." Then call Breville.
  • No water from the group head: on both, check the tank is filled and locked. The BES880 adds descaling, and grind or dose problems.
  • Coffee too cold: pre-heat the cups. On the BES881 also check the milk temperature setting; on the BES880, raise Brew Temperature in Settings.

Neither book describes owner repairs inside the housing. The BES881 book adds: "Do not open the programming port." Breville US: 1-866-BREVILLE (1-866-273-8455). Only the Sage UK/EU book prints a warranty (2 years); the Breville books we read print none.

Which Should You Buy?

  • Choose the Touch Impress if you want help with dose and tamp, feedback on screen, and the bigger hopper.
  • Choose the Barista Touch if you're comfortable tamping by hand and want the wider 1-30 grind range.

We haven't compared prices, and the books say nothing about reliability.

FAQ

Is the Barista Touch Impress a ThermoJet machine?

Its books don't name the heater; they say "Rapid Heat Up" in 3 seconds. The Barista Touch book is the one that names a heater, and it says thermocoil.

Does the Barista Touch Impress have a pressure gauge?

No. Neither the Touch nor the Touch Impress lists a pressure gauge. The Impress shows dose and tamp levels on screen instead.

Do both have a factory reset?

Yes. Both have Factory Reset in Settings, and both delete custom drinks. On the Impress it's under Settings → Other.

Which has more grind settings?

The Barista Touch: its dial runs 1-30. The Touch Impress runs 1-25.
