Why No Water Comes Out of a Breville

Every Breville espresso book gives the same short list of causes for "water does not flow from the group head". The machine isn't hot yet, the tank is empty or not locked in, it needs descaling, or the coffee and basket are blocking the flow. You can tell which in a minute: run water with no portafilter in.

If water flows freely, the machine is fine, and the cause is the grind, the dose, the tamp or a blocked basket. If it doesn't, work through heat, tank and scale.

The books don't describe an air lock to bleed, a solenoid valve to free, or an inlet filter to clean, and they have no owner steps inside the housing.

Try This First

• Wait for the machine to finish heating. Barista Express: the POWER light stops flashing and all the buttons light.
• Push the tank down until it locks (Dual Boiler: close the latch), with water above MIN.
• Run water with the portafilter out. Press 1 CUP or 2 CUP, and watch the group head.
• Barista Express: check the STEAM/HOT WATER dial is at STANDBY.
• Dual Boiler: check the hot water dial is closed and the steam lever is in the closed position.

Find Your Cause

Fix 1: Let It Reach Temperature (Works About 20% of the Time)

Breville's first cause is that the machine "has not reached operating temperature". It won't deliver until it has.

1. Barista Express (BES870): wait until the POWER light stops flashing and every button lights. If the STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes at switch-on, the dial isn't at STANDBY; turn it there, or it won't heat at all.
2. Dual Boiler (BES920): wait until POWER stops flashing. A flashing HOT WATER LED at switch-on means the hot water dial is open. A beep means the steam lever is open.
3. Barista Express Impress (BES876): the POWER light flashes for up to about 40 seconds while it heats.
4. Barista Pro and the Bambinos heat with a ThermoJet in about 3 seconds, so waiting rarely helps on those.

Fix 2: Fill and Lock the Tank (Works About 30% of the Time)

The second and third causes in every book are an empty tank and a tank not fully inserted and locked. The Barista Pro and Bambino books add a row for "water doesn't come through (the machine makes loud noise)": the tank is empty, or below MIN.

1. Lift the tank out and fill it with fresh, cold water up to MAX.
2. Check the water filter holder is locked in place inside the tank.
3. Push the tank down until it locks. Dual Boiler: close the latch. A FILL TANK message with a full tank means the latch is open.
4. Run water with the portafilter out.

Bambino (BES450): the lights flash 6 times in 3 seconds when it detects no water. Barista Express Impress: its book says the machine won't operate if the water is below MIN.

Fix 3: Clear the Puck and the Basket (Works About 25% of the Time)

If water runs freely with the portafilter out, the restriction is the coffee or the basket. Breville calls drips-or-nothing over-extraction.

1. Grind a few numbers coarser.
2. Lower the dose and trim with the Razor. The BES870 and BES876 doses are about 8-11 g (1 cup) and 16-19 g (2 cup).
3. Tamp lighter: 22-33 lb (10-15 kg) on the BES870, BES500 and BES920; 15-20 kg on the BES878 and BES450.
4. Unblock the basket with the pin on the cleaning tool. If it stays blocked, soak the basket and portafilter in a dissolved cleaning tablet for about 20 minutes.
5. Pull a shot. Flow should start after about 8-12 seconds on most models.

Fix 4: Descale the Way Your Model Asks (Works About 20% of the Time)

"Machine needs to be descaled" appears under the no-flow row in every book read. Breville says hard-water scale reduces "brewing flow, brewing temperature, power of the machine".

• Barista Express (BES870): CLEAN/DESCALE solid, then hold 2 CUP + POWER. Full steps
• Barista Pro (BES878): DESCALE on the LCD, then MENU → DESCALE → 1 CUP. Full steps
• Bambino Plus (BES500): with it off, hold 1 CUP + STEAM for 5 seconds. Bambino (BES450): hold 2 CUP + STEAM for 5 seconds.
• Dual Boiler (BES920): Advanced Features → dESC, which drains both boilers. Allow about 1.5 hours.

Fix 5: Let the Thermal Cut-Out Reset, Then Call (Works About 5% of the Time)

If the machine stopped working mid-use, the books' answer is a safety thermal cut-out from the pump or grinder overheating.

1. Switch off and unplug.
2. Wait 30-60 minutes. Wait 60 minutes on the Dual Boiler and Oracle models.
3. Plug in and try again.
4. If water still won't flow with a full, locked tank, a hot machine and a recent descale, call Breville. The books describe no owner repair inside the machine.

Prevent Flow Problems

• Keep the tank above MIN and locked, every time.
• Change the water filter on schedule: every 2 months on the BES870 and BES878, every 3 months on the BES876 and BES920.
• Rinse the basket after every shot, and soak it in a tablet solution when it clogs.
• Descale when asked. Don't use distilled or demineralized water: Breville says not to.

FAQ

Why is no water coming out of my Breville?

Work through Breville's list in order: is it hot yet, is the tank full and locked, does water flow with the portafilter out, and when did you last descale? If water flows with the portafilter out, the grind, dose, tamp or a blocked basket is the cause.

Does a Breville need priming?

Only on first use. The books describe a first flush: water through the group head, steam and hot water. That conditions the machine. They don't describe an air lock to bleed in normal use; an empty tank is the cause they list instead.

Why is my Breville pump loud but nothing comes out?

The Barista Pro and Bambino books give one cause: the tank is empty or below MIN. Fill it and lock it down. On other models, also check the tank is fully inserted, and on the Dual Boiler that the latch is closed.

Can I clean the solenoid valve myself?

Breville's books don't describe a solenoid valve or any owner steps inside the machine. If water won't flow after the steps above, it's a Breville service job.
