Breville Precision Brewer Leaking Water? 5 Fixes

Where the Water Is Tells You the Fix

Breville's Precision Brewer book (BDC450) lists every leak it covers under the basket or the carafe. Coffee dripping when you lift the basket out means its drip-stop seal is blocked. Coffee over the basket rim means an overflow, and the book gives a list of causes. A carafe that overfills wasn't empty, or had too much water behind it.

The book doesn't describe a reservoir seal, internal tubing or any leak from the base. For water under the machine, call Breville.

Fix 1: Clean the Basket's Drip-Stop Seal (Works About 30% of the Time)

For "coffee leaking from basket when removed", Breville's cause is the basket's drip-stop seal, blocked by grounds or other material.

1. Take the basket out and turn it upside down.
2. Press the drip-stop seal and rinse it through under the tap.
3. Refit the basket.

Fix 2: Stop the Basket Overflowing (Works About 28% of the Time)

The book lists these causes for coffee overflowing from the basket:

• The carafe isn't inserted
• Too much coffee, or ground too fine
• No paper filter in a basket that needs one
• A paper filter in the mesh filter

Use the mesh filter without paper, and the other baskets with paper. Breville's ratio is 1 spoon of coffee per 5 oz (150 ml) of water.

Fix 3: Carafe Overfilling (Works About 20% of the Time)

• Empty the carafe before every brew.
• Don't fill the tank past MAX.
• Water must run freely through the carafe lid. Make sure the lid is locked and nothing blocks the opening.
• Never top up the tank once a brew has started.

For iced coffee, OVER ICE works with up to 20 oz of water. With more than that in the tank, the mode won't start.

1. Pull it back up.

Fix 5: Showerhead Loose or Falling Out (Works About 10% of the Time)

Baskets and Filters: Getting the Setup Right

Most of the book's leak rows come down to the basket setup. The Precision Brewer ships with:

• A flat basket, which is the factory setting, and a cone filter basket insert.
• A mesh basket filter, used without paper.
• FILTER TYPE in the Settings menu, so the brewer knows which you're using.

Breville's rule is simple: "Never use the mesh basket filter and a paper filter together." Rinse the basket and mesh filter after each brew, and keep the fine holes clear with a soft brush.

Water Under the Machine

Breville's troubleshooting table has no row for a leak from the base, and it describes no tubing or panel for owners to open. Wipe everything dry and run a water-only brew to find the source. Why does my Precision Brewer basket drip when I take it out?

Its drip-stop seal is blocked. Turn the basket upside down, press the seal and rinse it through.

Why is coffee overflowing from the basket?

Breville lists the carafe not in place, too much or too fine coffee, no paper in a paper basket, or paper in the mesh filter.

Why does my Precision Brewer carafe overflow?

It wasn't empty, or the tank was filled past MAX. Water also has to run freely through the carafe lid.
