Where an Oracle Leak Comes From

Breville's Oracle (BES980) and Oracle Touch (BES990) books have no row called "leaking". Wet benches show up in four other rows. Espresso runs out around the portafilter. The drip tray overflows. The hot water outlet leaks or the steam is very wet. Steam pours out of the group head. The most common is the first, and it has an owner fix: wipe the basket rim, dry the lugs and turn the handle fully past centre.

Note when the water appears. During a shot means the portafilter seal. After milk or at idle means the drip tray. From the hot water outlet means your water. Steam from the group head means switch off and wait an hour.

Try This First

• Watch a shot. Coffee seeping from the rim of the portafilter is the most common Oracle leak, and the easiest to fix.
• Pull out the drip tray. Is the Empty Me! indicator up? An overfull tray spills at the front.
• Check what water is in the tank. Distilled, demineralized or heavily filtered water is the book's cause for a leaking hot water outlet.
• Push the tank in and close its latch. A FILL TANK message with a full tank means it isn't locked.

Fix 1: Seat the Portafilter Properly (Works About 40% of the Time)

The silicone seal in the group head only holds if the portafilter is fully locked and the rim is clean and dry. Both books list the same three causes for "espresso runs out around the edge of the portafilter" and for the portafilter coming out during a shot.

1. Turn the handle right until it's past centre and firmly locked. Breville notes this "will not damage the silicone seal".
2. Wipe the basket rim after grinding. Grounds left on the rim stop the seal closing.
3. Dry the basket and the portafilter lugs before dosing. Wet surfaces "reduce the friction required to hold the portafilter in place" under pressure.
4. Pull a shot and watch the rim.

If the portafilter overfills before it's even in the group head, check the tamping fan is back on its drive shaft after cleaning. Both books list a missing fan as the cause.

Fix 2: Empty the Drip Tray (Works About 25% of the Time)

The Oracle sends water into the drip tray as part of normal use. The steam wand, for example, purges itself when you lower it. A full tray overflows at the front and looks like a leak from inside.

1. Empty the tray after each use, or when the Empty Me! indicator rises.
2. Remove the grill and wash the tray in warm soapy water. The indicator lifts out too.
3. Refit the tray fully before the next drink.

Fix 3: Change the Water (Works About 20% of the Time)

This is the only row in either book that names a leak outright: "Pumps continue to operate / Steam is very wet / Hot water outlet leaks." The cause given is "highly filtered, demineralized or distilled water", which affects "how the machine is designed to function".

1. Empty the tank.
2. Refill with cold, filtered tap water that still has its minerals. The Oracle Touch book says to avoid reverse osmosis water unless minerals are added back.
3. Keep the supplied water filter in the tank and replace it every 3 months or 10.6 US gal (40 L).

Fix 4: Close the Descale Valves (Works About 10% of the Time)

Descaling the Oracle means draining both boilers by hand through two valves behind the DESCALE ACCESS cover on the lower front. The Oracle Touch has a descale access point too, and its screen guides you through it. Each drain ends with closing the screws "clockwise until sealed". If water appears at the lower front after a descale, a valve wasn't closed fully.

⚠️ Safety: switch off and let the machine cool for at least 1 hour first. Steam can escape when a valve opens, and the drip tray may be hot.

1. Remove the DESCALE ACCESS cover.
2. With a flat-head screwdriver, turn each screw clockwise until it's sealed.
3. Don't overtighten. Breville warns it can damage the valves.
4. Refit the cover, dry the area and run hot water to check.

Oracle Touch: descale only from Settings → Descale Cycle. The book warns, "DO NOT attempt to descale your machine without using the Descale procedure in the Settings menu. Damage to your machine could occur." On the Oracle, the entry is machine off, hold 1 CUP then POWER for 3 seconds, then dESc.

Fix 5: Steam From the Group Head Means Switch Off (Works About 5% of the Time)

"Steam pouring out of group head" has one answer in both books: turn the machine off, wait 60 minutes, and turn it back on. If it happens again, call Breville. The same advice applies to "the machine is On but ceases to operate".

1. Switch off with POWER and let it sit for 60 minutes.
2. Switch on and let it heat fully.
3. If steam comes from the group head again, stop using it and call Breville.

When DIY Won't Work

Stop using it and call Breville if:

• Water collects under the machine, away from the drip tray
• Steam keeps coming from the group head after the 60-minute rest
• The display shows ERR or "Operation Error"
• You smell burning or see water near the power cord

Breville's books describe no owner repair inside the housing. Boiler seals, probes and internal hoses are service work.

FAQ

Why is coffee leaking around my Oracle's portafilter?

Breville gives three causes: the portafilter isn't turned fully past centre, there are grounds on the basket rim, or the rim or lugs are wet. Wipe and dry them, then lock the handle firmly to the right. Going past centre won't harm the seal.

Why is my Oracle's hot water outlet dripping?

The Oracle and Oracle Touch books blame highly filtered, demineralized or distilled water, which also causes very wet steam and pumps that keep running. Switch to cold, filtered tap water, and call Breville if it continues.

Is water in the drip tray a leak?

No. Water in the drip tray is normal. The steam wand purges into it after milk, for example. It only becomes a problem when the tray overflows, so empty it after each use or when Empty Me! rises.

Can I replace the Oracle's boiler seals myself?

Breville's books don't describe any owner repair inside the machine, and they give no seal part numbers. Anything behind the panels, apart from the descale valves' screws, is a job for Breville or an authorized repairer.
