Breville Oracle Jet Not Working? 6 Fixes (BES985)

The Oracle Jet Fails Differently From the Oracle Touch

Most Oracle Jet faults in Breville's own troubleshooting table come from the grind-and-tamp path, not the heater. If the grinder runs but nothing lands in the portafilter, clear the hopper and burrs. If it overfills or won't stop, the tamping fan wasn't put back after cleaning. If no water reaches the group head, refill the tank and prime it: Brew for 30 seconds, then Hot Water for 30 seconds.

The BES985 isn't a cheaper Oracle Touch. Breville lists no dual boiler. It heats with a ThermoJet system and a separately heated 58 mm group head, and it grinds, doses and tamps 22 g of coffee for you at the grind outlet. It also has Wi-Fi for software updates, which brings a few troubleshooting rows of its own. Everything below is from the BES985 instruction book.

Try This First

• Tank latched? The water tank sits at the back. A tank that isn't fully in and latched is listed under both "won't operate" rows.
• Hopper locked? Beans on top of the burrs can stop it locking.
• Portafilter all the way round? Rotate it right until the handle is past centre. Breville says that won't damage the silicone seal.
• Water in the drip tray after steaming? Auto Purge releases steam and water when you lower the wand. That's normal.
• No Wi-Fi? The machine still works "in the same way as an espresso machine with no network connection".

Fix 1: Grinder Runs but No Coffee, or It Clicks

The motor starts but nothing comes out, or there's a loud clicking. Breville's causes are an empty hopper, a blocked grinder or hopper, a bean stuck in the hopper, a foreign object or blocked chute, or moisture clogging the grinder after cleaning.

1. Fill the hopper with fresh, whole roasted beans.
2. Unlock and remove the hopper. Look in the hopper and on the burrs for a blockage or foreign object, and remove it.
3. Clean the burrs and the grind outlet with the supplied brushes.
4. If it's damp, leave the burrs to dry fully before reassembling. Breville allows a hair dryer to speed it up.
5. Refit and lock the hopper, then grind again. The same grinder rows on other Breville models are in our Breville grinder guide.

Grinder overheated? Switch it off, unplug it and let it rest for 5 minutes.

Fix 2: Portafilter Overfills or the Grinder Won't Stop

Signs it's this one: grounds pile over the basket, or the grinder keeps running. Breville's cause for both: the tamping fan was removed for cleaning and not replaced (or the hopper is empty).

1. Emergency stop: rotate the portafilter to the left to stop grind, dose and tamp. Unplug if needed.
2. Check the hopper has beans.
3. Look up into the grind collar. The tamping fan must be in place and mounted on the drive shaft. Refit it by hand if it isn't.
4. Grind again.

Tamp too hard or too light? Tamping height is adjustable. With the machine off and unplugged, pull the tamping fan down from the grind collar, pull out the fan coupling, loosen its fastener with the supplied hex key and turn the coupling to the length you want.

Fix 3: No Water From the Group Head

When the tank has run empty, Breville has you refill it and then prime the system.

1. Fill the tank and push it fully in until the latch closes.
2. Touch Brew and run water through the group head for 30 seconds.
3. Touch Hot Water and run water through the hot water outlet for 30 seconds.
4. Try a shot.

If the water still barely moves and the shot only drips, Breville's other causes are grind too fine (go to a higher number) or a scale blockage: run the descale from Settings → Descale Cycle.

Fix 4: The Machine Is On but Won't Operate

Breville gives two causes: the tank isn't fully inserted and locked, or the pump has overheated from back-to-back extractions.

1. Push the tank fully in and lock the latch.
2. If you've been making shot after shot, switch the machine off, unplug it and let it cool down.
3. Then switch off, unplug, plug back in and turn it on.

Fix 5: Espresso Leaks Around the Portafilter

Coffee running down the outside of the portafilter, or the portafilter coming out during a shot, has three causes in the book.

1. Rotate the portafilter right until the handle is past centre and locked.
2. Wipe excess coffee off the basket rim after grinding.
3. Dry the basket and portafilter thoroughly before filling. Breville explains why: wet rims or lugs "reduce the friction required to hold the portafilter in place whilst under pressure".

Fix 6: Grind Is Coarse Even on Fine Settings

Signs it's this one: the grind stays coarse at low numbers, or the upper burr won't go back in. Breville's cause: the upper burr isn't aligned or seated.

1. Turn the grind dial to a coarse setting, such as 45.
2. Twist the upper burr holder counter-clockwise to remove it.
3. Clean grounds off both burrs.
4. Align the dots on the upper burr, then line it up with the dot on the lower burr and twist clockwise until it locks.
5. Turn the dial back to your usual setting.

⚠️ Safety: grinder burrs are sharp. Remove the hopper and keep fingers clear of the burrs.

Milk, Wi-Fi and Software Rows

• Not enough milk texture: the steam wand tip is blocked (Settings → Steam wand cleaning), there's scale (descale), or your milk needs a different froth level. Auto MilQ has settings for dairy, soy, almond and oat, 8 texture levels and 113-167 °F (45-75 °C).
• Pumps keep running, very wet steam or the hot water outlet leaks: you're using highly filtered, demineralised or distilled water. Switch to cold filtered water with minerals.
• Can't connect to Wi-Fi: check the password, move the router closer, unplug and replug the machine, and re-enter the credentials.
• Update downloaded but won't install: unplug and plug the machine back in. If that fails, Breville lists a factory reset (Settings → Reset factory settings), and don't unplug it during the reset.
• No Wi-Fi at all: use a phone hotspot, or skip setup. Choose Other, skip the network and password, and after the second failed attempt choose Update later.

When DIY Won't Work

• Call Breville if the machine still won't operate after cooling and a power cycle, if wet steam continues with mineral water, or if an update won't install after a reset. US 1-866-273-8455, Canada 1-855-683-3535.
• Warranty: the book gives a 2-year limited warranty, with full terms at breville.com.
• Leave the inside alone. "Servicing other than cleaning should be performed at an authorized Breville Service Center", and the programming port is for service staff only.

Prevention

• Clear-water back-flush after every session: cleaning disc in the basket, Brew, 20 seconds of pressure, stop.
• Rinse the basket and portafilter after each session. Soak them in a cleaning-tablet solution for about 20 minutes if the holes block.
• Run the cleaning and descale cycles when the screen asks. Breville also says to descale if you see scale in the tank, even with the filter fitted.
• Change the water filter every 3 months, and enter your water-hardness strip result.
• Hand-wash every part. Nothing goes in the dishwasher.
• Always refit the tamping fan after cleaning the burrs.

FAQ

Does the Oracle Jet need Wi-Fi to work?

No. Breville says that without Wi-Fi it "can still be operated in the same way as an espresso machine". Wi-Fi only adds software updates, which Breville recommends. You can skip setup by choosing Update later after two failed connection attempts.

Does the Oracle Jet have a dual boiler?

Not according to its book. It lists a ThermoJet heating system and a ThermoJet-heated group head, adjustable in 1 °F steps. The two-boiler machine is the Oracle Touch (BES990).

How much coffee does the Oracle Jet dose?

22 grams, ground, dosed and tamped automatically into the 58 mm portafilter. Tamping height can be adjusted with the hex key if you want a firmer or lighter tamp.

Can I put Oracle Jet parts in the dishwasher?

No. The book says "Do not clean any of the parts or accessories in the dishwasher." Wash everything by hand in warm water with a gentle dish soap, and don't use alkaline cleaners.
