Breville won't brew? Its books list the causes: not at temperature, tank empty or unlocked, descaling due, too-fine grind or blocked basket. Fixes by model.

When Your Breville Refuses to Brew

Breville's instruction books have a row for exactly this: "Water does not flow from the group head." The Barista Express (BES870), Barista Pro (BES878) and Bambino Plus (BES500) list the same causes: the water tank is empty or not locked in, the machine needs descaling, or the coffee is ground too fine, over-dosed or over-tamped, or the filter basket is blocked. The Barista Express and Dual Boiler (BES920) add one more: the machine hasn't reached operating temperature.

If water comes out but only drips, the same row sends you to "Espresso only drips from the portafilter spouts or not at all", which is about grind, dose, tamp and a blocked basket.

Dual Boiler: beeps at switch-onSteam lever openFix 1

Fix 1: Let It Reach Temperature, Dials Closed (Works About 25% of the Time)

  1. Wait for the ready signal. On the Barista Express and Dual Boiler, the POWER light flashes while heating and goes steady when ready. On the Barista Express, all the button lights come on when it's ready.
  2. Barista Express: if the machine doesn't heat up and the STEAM/HOT WATER light flashes at switch-on, turn the steam dial to STANDBY.
  3. Dual Boiler: if it beeps at switch-on, move the steam lever to CLOSED. If the HOT WATER light flashes, turn the hot water dial to CLOSED.
  4. Woken from sleep (Barista Express): after an hour idle it goes to sleep, and after 3 hours it switches off. Press any button except POWER to wake it, and wait for it to re-heat.

Time: 1-2 minutes

Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 2: Fill and Lock the Water Tank (Works About 25% of the Time)

Two of the four "no flow" causes are the tank:

  1. Fill the tank with cold water. The Barista Pro and Bambino Plus books add a row: "Water doesn't come through (the machine makes loud noise)" means the tank is empty or below MIN.
  2. Push the tank down completely until it locks into place. On the Dual Boiler, push it fully in and close the latch. A Dual Boiler showing FILL TANK with a full tank means the tank isn't fully in and latched.
  3. Bambino Plus: if the froth and temperature lights flash together, the tank may be empty. Fill it, then hold the steam button for 3 seconds to purge.

Time: 1 minute

Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 3: Fix the Grind, Dose and Tamp (Works About 20% of the Time)

For "Espresso only drips from the portafilter spouts or not at all", Breville lists:

CauseFix
Coffee ground too finelyUse a slightly coarser grind
Too much coffee in the basketLower the dose; after tamping, trim with the Razor dose-trimming tool
Coffee tamped too firmlyTamp with about 10-15 kg (22-33 lb) of pressure (Barista Express, Bambino Plus); 15-20 kg in the Barista Pro book

Change one thing at a time, and pull a shot after each change.

Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 4: Unblock the Filter Basket (Works About 12% of the Time)

A blocked basket stops the flow even with the right grind.

  1. Use the pin on the end of the cleaning tool supplied with the machine to clear the holes.
  2. Barista Pro: if the holes stay blocked, dissolve a cleaning tablet in hot water and soak the basket and portafilter for about 20 minutes, then rinse thoroughly.
  3. Rinse and dry the basket before dosing.

Time: 5-25 minutes
Cost: Free (or a cleaning tablet)
Success Rate: About 12%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 5: Descale the Machine (Works About 12% of the Time)

"Machine needs to be descaled" is in the Barista Express, Barista Pro and Bambino Plus "no flow" rows. Use your model's procedure with Breville descaler:

  • Barista Express (BES870): one Breville descaling sachet in 34 fl oz (1 L) of water. With the machine off, hold 2 CUP, then hold POWER at the same time. Run the coffee, hot water and steam circuits as the book directs.
  • Barista Pro (BES878): remove the tank filter, fill to the DESCALE line, then MENU → DESCALE → 1 CUP.
  • Bambino Plus (BES500): with the machine off, hold 1 CUP + STEAM for about 5 seconds, with a 68 oz (2 L) container under the portafilter and steam wand.

More in our Breville descale light guide.

Time: One descale cycle
Cost: A Breville descaling sachet
Success Rate: About 12%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 6: Let It Cool, Then Call Breville (Works About 6% of the Time)

If the machine is on but stops working partway, the safety thermal cut-out may have tripped because the pump or grinder overheated.

  • Barista Express, Barista Pro, Bambino Plus: switch it off, unplug it and let it cool for about 30-60 minutes.
  • Dual Boiler: turn it off and wait 60 minutes before turning it back on.

If it still won't brew with a full, locked tank, a coarser grind, a clear basket and a fresh descale, contact Breville Consumer Support: 1-866-BREVILLE (1-866-273-8455) in the US, or 1-855-683-3535 in Canada. The instruction books give no owner procedure for the pump or valves.

Time: 30-60 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 6%
Difficulty: Easy

When to Contact Breville Support

Contact Breville if nothing comes from the group head after Fixes 1-5, if the thermal cut-out keeps tripping, or if the Dual Boiler shows E1, E2 or E3, which Breville calls errors the user can't reset.

Prevent Future Brewing Problems

  • Wait for the machine to be ready before brewing.
  • Keep the tank above MIN and locked in.
  • Adjust grind one step at a time, and trim the dose with the Razor tool.
  • Clear the basket holes when they look blocked.
  • Descale when the machine asks.

FAQ

Why is no water coming out of my Breville group head?

Breville's books list these causes: not at operating temperature yet (Barista Express, Dual Boiler), the tank empty or not locked in, the machine needs descaling, or the coffee is too fine, over-dosed or over-tamped, or the basket is blocked. Check them in that order.

Why does my Breville only drip espresso?

The grind is too fine, there's too much coffee, or it's tamped too hard. Try a slightly coarser grind, trim the dose, and tamp at about 10-15 kg. Also check the basket holes aren't blocked.

My Breville pump is loud but no water comes out. What's wrong?

On the Barista Pro and Bambino Plus, Breville's troubleshooting table says the tank is empty or below MIN. Fill it and make sure it's locked into place.

Can I adjust the pump pressure on my Breville?

The Breville instruction books don't describe any pump pressure adjustment. The documented fixes for weak or no flow are grind, dose, tamp, a clear basket and descaling.

How long should I let my Breville cool down if it stops?

Breville's books say about 30-60 minutes for the Barista Express, Barista Pro and Bambino Plus. The Dual Boiler book says 60 minutes.
