Nespresso Vertuo Up Not Working? 5 Fixes That Work

How the Vertuo Up Tells You What's Wrong

The Vertuo Up has three buttons, the coffee button, the Coffee Creations button and the maintenance button, plus a connectivity light. Their colours tell you most of what you need. Nespresso's US manual has a troubleshooting row for each of these:

• Coffee button off: it switched off after 2 minutes of non-use. Press it once.
• Coffee button steady orange, won't brew: fill and seat the water tank, then descale.
• Maintenance button steady orange: descaling is due.
• Coffee button steady white, won't brew: close the lever and use a fresh capsule. If it's connected, it may be updating software.

Fix 1: Turned Off or Won't Turn On

What the manual says: "The machine turned off automatically after 2 minutes of non-use. Press the coffee button once to turn it on." It stays on while you're using the Nespresso app. Check the plug and voltage. If nothing helps, unplug it, wait a few seconds, and plug it back in.

Fix 3: Steady Orange, Won't Brew

What the manual says: fill the tank with fresh drinking water, check it's well positioned, and press the coffee button. Descale if the maintenance button is also steady orange.

Ran out of water mid-cup? Refill and press the coffee button once. The cup is topped up to the missing volume.

Fix 4: Only Water, No Coffee, or Unusual Flow

What the manual says:

• Only "water": the machine couldn't read the capsule code, so it dispensed 40 mL of non-drinkable water. Use an undamaged capsule, and never reuse one.
• No water or coffee: tank filled and positioned; fresh capsule; lever closed. Eject the capsule and run a cleaning, then descale.
• Unusual flow: "the coffee flow speed depends on the coffee variety." Check the capsule, lever and tank, then descale.
• Pressed the button with no capsule? That's Short Rinsing: about 40 mL of hot water.

Cleaning: with the machine on and the lever open, hold the maintenance button for 3 seconds until the coffee button is steady blue. Close the lever and press it once. Rinsing takes up to about 3 minutes, with 0.5 L of water in the tank.

Fix 5: Descale or Reset

Descale when the maintenance button is steady orange. It takes about 15 minutes and can't be interrupted. Use the Nespresso descaling kit: 0.6 L water + 1 unit of descaling liquid, with a 1.5 L container. Start it from the maintenance menu (hold the maintenance button 3 s), or from the app.

Resets:

• Reset my settings (maintenance menu): removes your customisations only. The 3 buttons blink 3 times.
• Remove and reset the machine: hold the coffee + maintenance buttons for 10 seconds. All lights blink 5 times, the machine unpairs from the app and turns off.

Coffee Creations Button

• Steady white: you turned on Coffee Creations, a concentrated extraction for iced and milk drinks. Press it again before brewing to turn it off.
• Turns off before brewing: that capsule can't be brewed this way (Ristretto, Cold Brew Style, Carafe Pour-Over Style), so it brews at the normal size.
