Nespresso Vertuo Up vs. Vertuo Next: Which Should You Buy?

The Up Is the Slim One With More Buttons

Nespresso's own numbers separate these two clearly. The Vertuo Up is 12 cm wide with a 1.4 L tank and a 940 W heater that Nespresso rates at a 3-second heat-up. It has three controls: a coffee button, a Coffee Creations button for concentrated over-ice and milk recipes, and a maintenance button. The Vertuo Next has a 1.1 L tank, 1500 W (US/Canada), and a single button that does everything.

Both brew the same Vertuo capsules up to the 535 ml Carafe size, both switch off after 2 minutes, and both weigh about 4 kg. On the US editions, both have Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

What the Up Adds

Coffee Creations mode. Nespresso describes it as brewing "concentrated, temperature-adjusted coffee for all your over-ice and milk-based recipes". Press the Coffee Creations button, then the coffee button. If a capsule can't be brewed that way, the button turns off and the machine brews the normal cup size instead. Nespresso doesn't recommend the mode for Ristretto, XL, Cold Brew Style or Carafe Pour-Over Style capsules.

A maintenance button and menu. Holding it for 3 seconds opens a loop of rinsing, emptying the pipes, descaling, "reset my settings" and connectivity on/off. When descaling is due, the maintenance button turns steady orange. Descaling takes about 15 minutes and can't be interrupted once started. Temperature control, through the app only. The manual says temperature customisation is "exclusive... only through the App". There's no temperature setting on the machine itself.

A maintenance module. The used-capsule basket and residue tray lift out together, holding 18 espresso or 13 mug capsules. Wash the parts with hot water and a mild detergent, and keep them out of the dishwasher.

What the Next Does Differently

One button. The Next's single button and its light colours are the whole interface. Its factory reset is 5 presses within 3 seconds with the head closed and the lever unlocked. The Up has two reset levels instead: "reset my settings" through the maintenance menu, and a full reset that also unpairs the app (hold the coffee and maintenance buttons for 10 seconds).

Higher wattage, smaller tank. 1500 W against the Up's 940 W, and 1.1 L against 1.4 L. The Next manuals we read print no heat-up time.

Different rebadged versions. The Next is also sold as a KRUPS XN910 and a Magimix M700; the Up as a KRUPS XN940 and a Sage SNV620. Check the Nespresso code on the box (GCV1/GDV1 or MC1/MD1) to be sure which machine you're buying.

Cup Sizes

Both machines brew the 535 ml carafe size. A size missing from a manual's list may be a revision difference rather than a hardware one, so check the capsule's own guidance. On the Up, you can program a cup from 20 to 500 ml, or up to 1 L for Carafe Pour-Over Style.

Buy the Vertuo Up if counter width matters (12 cm), if you want the larger 1.4 L tank, or if you'll use Coffee Creations for iced and milk drinks. The dedicated maintenance button also makes descaling easier to find than the Next's button sequences.

Buy the Vertuo Next if you find it for less, or want a particular rebadged version. It brews the same capsules to the same 535 ml carafe size.
