Nespresso Vertuo Up Leaking Water? 5 Fixes

Is Your Vertuo Up Really Leaking?

Often it isn't. Nespresso's own Vertuo Up manual has a row titled "The machine seems to be leaking". It starts: "You might find some coffee/water liquid in the drip tray after each brewing (few ml per coffee), resulting from the machine technology & design." That liquid collects in the maintenance module, the lift-out unit that holds the used-capsule basket and the waste water. Empty it every time you empty the capsule basket.

If water really is getting out of the machine, the same row names three checks. Is the water tank well positioned? Is the maintenance module well positioned? Is the capsule basket full, or is a capsule stuck?

Fix 1: Empty the Waste Water With the Capsules

Symptoms: liquid in the drip tray or the module after normal brewing, a few ml per cup.

What the manual says: this is from "the machine technology & design". It also appears in a second row: "I can see too much coffee/water liquid in my waste water container."

How to fix:

1. Lift the maintenance module straight up.
2. Separate the used-capsule basket from the rest. Recycle the capsules and pour away the coffee/water residue.
3. Wash the parts with hot water and a mild odourless detergent, then dry them.
4. Reassemble and put the module back.

Do this every time you empty the capsules, not only when the basket is full. Don't put the parts in the dishwasher; the manual says no.

Fix 2: Account for Short Rinsing and Maintenance Water

Symptoms: more water than usual in the module, or clear water in your cup instead of coffee.

What the manual says:

• Pressing the coffee button with no capsule starts Short Rinsing. About 40 mL of hot water comes out; it's not drinkable, and 20 ml goes to the waste container.
• If the machine can't read the capsule code, it does the same thing: 40 mL of non-drinkable water. Use a fresh, undamaged capsule, and never brew the same capsule twice.
• After cleaning, descaling or emptying, "Water may accumulate in the maintenance module". Empty it after any maintenance run.

Fix 3: Reseat the Water Tank and the Maintenance Module

Symptoms: water around the base or behind the machine.

How to fix:

1. Lift off the water tank, refit its lid and put it back in position.
2. Lift out the maintenance module and push it back down fully.
3. Brew a cup and watch where the water appears.

The manual's "unusual coffee flow" row also starts with the tank: "Check that the water tank is well positioned on the machine."

Fix 4: Clear a Full Basket or a Stuck Capsule

Symptoms: leaking right after a brew, or the lever feels obstructed.

How to fix:

1. Open the lever. The manual says opening the lever removes the capsule after extraction, so open it only once brewing is finished (coffee button steady white).
2. Empty the capsule basket. It holds 18 espresso or 13 mug capsules.
3. Look for a capsule still in the head, and take it out if you can reach it.
4. Close the lever and brew with a fresh capsule.

Fix 5: Run a Cleaning, Then Descale If It's Due

Symptoms: coffee residue in the cup, unusual flow, or the maintenance button steady orange.

Cleaning (monthly, or when you see coffee residue):

1. Eject the capsule and remove the maintenance module, then empty it and put it back.
2. Rinse the tank and fill it with 0.5 L (17 fl oz) of fresh water, once only.
3. Remove the cup support and place a container of at least 1 L (34 fl oz) under the outlet.
4. Turn the machine on, open the lever and hold the maintenance button for at least 3 seconds, until the coffee button is steady blue.
5. Close the lever and press the blue coffee button once. Rinsing takes up to about 3 minutes.
6. Wash and dry the maintenance module, then refit it.

Descaling: when the maintenance button is steady orange. It takes about 15 minutes and can't be interrupted once started. You need the Nespresso descaling kit: 0.6 L of water + 1 unit of descaling liquid, and a 1.5 L container. The Vertuo Up manual has no seal, tank valve or internal part for owners to replace. Contact Nespresso customer service if:

• water keeps escaping with the tank, module and basket seated and emptied
