Four Keurig frothers, four sets of rules: K-Café, K-Café SMART, K-Latte and the cordless SimpleCafé. Find yours and fix the whisk, fill line, timing or charge.
Keurig Frother Not Working? 5 Fixes by Model (K-Café, K-Latte)
Which Keurig Frother Do You Have?
Keurig makes four quite different frothers, and the fix depends on which one you own. Most "not working" frothers on a K-Café, K-Café SMART or K-Latte come down to the whisk not seated on its post, milk outside the fill lines, or the frother waiting for the brewer to finish. The cordless SimpleCafé wand usually just needs charging.
| Frother | How to recognise it | Heats milk? | Dishwasher |
|---|---|---|---|
| K-Café (original) | A jug on its own base beside the brewer, with LATTE, CAPP and COLD buttons | Yes, about 3 minutes (or cold with COLD) | Frother and lid top rack; whisk in the utensil basket |
| K-Café SMART | A jug on a base, with one frother button that toggles Cold Froth 1, 2, 3 or Hot Froth; you start it with the K | Yes (Hot Froth) or cold | No |
| K-Latte | A frother jug on a base lowered onto the side of the brewer, with its own power button | Yes, about 3 minutes | No (dishwasher damage isn't covered by the warranty) |
| SimpleCafé | A cordless wand with a cup and lid, charged by USB-C; Latte, Cappuccino and Manual settings | No: warm the milk to 160°F (71°C) in the microwave first | Cup, lid and whisk top rack; wand never |
Each section below follows Keurig's own Use & Care Guide for that frother.
Try This First
- Lift the whisk and put it back. Keurig's guides name a whisk that isn't fully on its post, or fully into the wand, as a cause of poor or no froth.
- Is the brewer still brewing? The K-Café, K-Café SMART and K-Latte won't brew and froth at the same time. A K-Café frother light that pulses in and out is waiting for the brew to finish.
- Check the milk line. Below the minimum, above the maximum, or no milk at all each stops a good froth.
- Take the jug off and set it back down. On the original K-Café, all the frother base lights flashing means milk, whisk or seating.
- SimpleCafé dead? One LED, blinking lights on the front, or no response at all usually means a flat battery.
Fix 1: Seat the Whisk Properly
The whisk is what makes the foam, and it only works when it's locked onto its drive. Keurig's guides name it on the K-Café (when the frother lights flash) and the K-Café SMART, and give it as a cause of both shaking and weak froth on the SimpleCafé.
Signs it's this one: the milk stays flat or the froth is thin; the K-Café lights flash; the SimpleCafé wand shakes in your hand.
- K-Café and K-Café SMART (the K-Latte jug has a whisk too): take the jug off the base, lift out the whisk, rinse off any milk, and press it back down onto the post in the bottom of the jug.
- SimpleCafé: push the whisk into the wand base until it won't go any further. Then push the wand firmly into the cup lid so it sits snug and straight (Keurig says "perpendicular to the lid").
- Look at the whisk. On the SimpleCafé, Keurig says a bent or damaged whisk causes shaking and poor froth. Spare parts are sold at keurig.com.
- Run the frother again with fresh cold milk.

Fix 2: Let the Brewer and Frother Take Turns
On the brewers with a built-in frother, the brewer and frother share the machine, and the guides say plainly that they can't run at the same time. Which one waits depends on the model.
Signs it's this one: the frother won't start, or starts late; a light pulses; the brewer won't brew just after frothing.
- K-Café: if the frother base light is pulsing in and out, you started frothing while coffee was brewing. Do nothing: Keurig says the frother starts automatically when the brew finishes.
- K-Café SMART: wait for the brew to finish before frothing. To make a latte in one go, Keurig's sequence is froth first, then queue a shot: the shot brews automatically after the froth.
- K-Latte: if the frother won't start, wait 30 seconds after the brewer finishes and press the frother button again.
- Brewer won't brew after frothing (K-Café, K-Latte): wait 30 seconds after the frother has finished, then brew.
- Still stuck after waiting? Both the K-Café and K-Latte guides say to contact Customer Service. Brewer-side faults on those machines are in our K-Café and K-Latte guides.

Fix 3: Fill Between the Lines
Keurig's jugs and cups are marked with fill lines, and the guides warn against both under- and over-filling. The amount of milk also changes the result: on the SMART, filling to Min makes more froth than Max.
Signs it's this one: milk overflows the jug; the bottom scorches; froth is thin; the frother won't run with too little milk.
- K-Café: chilled milk to the LATTE line (the maximum) or the CAPP line (the minimum). Never run it empty.
- K-Café SMART: fill to Min for a cappuccino or Max for a latte. Overflowing: fill below Max. Scalding or burning: fill above Min, and clean the milk film off the bottom after every use.
- K-Latte: chilled milk to the MAX line, lid on, then press its power button. Don't run it before adding milk.
- SimpleCafé: fill the cup to the Latte or Cappuccino line. Frothing in a mug instead? Keep the milk to one-third of the mug, because it can more than double.
- Frothing the same milk twice? On the SMART, Keurig says that shortens the froth time, because the milk is already warm. Start with fresh cold milk.

Fix 4: Seat the Frother on Its Base and Restart the Brewer
The jug frothers get their power through the base. If the jug isn't seated, or the brewer's electronics need a restart, the frother does nothing or flashes.
Signs it's this one: all the frother lights flash (K-Café); the frother button does nothing (K-Café SMART); the frother won't heat or spin.
- K-Café, all frother base lights flashing: Keurig's three checks are milk in the frother, the whisk in place, and the frother properly seated on the base. Fix all three, then press LATTE or CAPP again.
- K-Latte: make sure the frother base is lowered fully onto the side of the brewer and the jug sits on it, then press the frother's own power button. It lights while heating and is done when the button flashes and then turns off.
- K-Café SMART frother not turning on: unplug the brewer, wait 30 seconds and plug it back in. If it still won't work, Keurig says to call Customer Service. Its settings and fill rules are covered in more depth in our K-Café SMART frother guide.
- Keep the jug's underside dry. The SMART guide says never to immerse the frother or wash the bottom part that contains the electrical plug.

Fix 5: SimpleCafé: Charge It and Check the Wand
The SimpleCafé is a cordless wand with a battery. Keurig's troubleshooting table gives three causes for a wand that won't start or a button that doesn't respond: it needs recharging, its "power-off protection" has triggered, or the wand is damaged.
Signs it's this one: no response to the button; only one LED lit; the front panel blinking.
- Charge it with the USB-C cable in the box and a 5V USB power adapter (not included). A fully flat battery can take up to 3 hours. The LEDs on the back blink while it charges, and all three light when it's full.
- Power-off protection: Keurig's fix is not to use the frother to stir or mix heavy, thick liquids. Let it rest, then try again in milk.
- Pick the right setting. Latte and Cappuccino stop by themselves; Manual runs until you press the button again.
- Hot drink? The SimpleCafé doesn't heat. Warm the milk in the frother cup (it's microwave safe) to 160°F, about 1-2 minutes, before frothing. The wand and whisk must never go in the microwave.
- Plant milk or lactose-free? Keurig says to use Manual for more frothing time, and that results vary by type and brand.
Time: Up to 3 hours to charge
Cost: Free (5V adapter if you don't have one)

Clean It So It Keeps Frothing
Milk residue is the slow cause behind most of the fixes above. Keurig's cleaning rules differ by frother:
| Frother | How Keurig says to clean it |
|---|---|
| K-Café | Right after each use. Frother and lid on the dishwasher top rack, whisk in the utensil basket; or soak the whisk 15 minutes in warm soapy water and brush it softly |
| K-Café SMART | Before and after each use. Remove the silicone ring from the lid and the whisk; wash by hand in warm soapy water; never immerse the frother or wash its bottom |
| K-Latte | Right after use. Remove the silicone ring and whisk; wash by hand with a soft cloth to protect the inner coating; don't submerge the frother; not dishwasher-safe |
| SimpleCafé | Whisk, lid and cup on the top rack; wipe the wand with a nonabrasive cloth, never submerge it, and dry it |
None of these guides gives a descaling step for the frother itself.
When DIY Won't Work
- Milk still won't froth with the whisk seated and milk at the right line: the K-Café and K-Latte guides both say "please call Customer Service".
- K-Café SMART frother dead after the 30-second unplug.
- A bent whisk or a damaged SimpleCafé wand: Keurig sells spare parts at keurig.com, or call about a manufacturing fault.
- Burning smell or cracked jug: stop using it.
Keurig's brewers and the SimpleCafé carry a limited one-year warranty in the US and Canada. Call Keurig at 1-866-901-BREW (2739) before returning anything; you'll need a Return Materials Authorization number. Keurig's guides say the brewers aren't user serviceable beyond cleaning and maintenance.
FAQ
Does the Keurig frother heat the milk?
On the K-Café, K-Café SMART and K-Latte, yes: they heat and froth in one go, and the K-Café and K-Café SMART can also froth cold. The SimpleCafé wand doesn't heat at all. Keurig's guide says to warm the milk to 160°F in the microwave first.
Why is my K-Café frother light pulsing?
It's waiting for the brewer. A light that pulses in and out on the K-Café frother base means you pressed it while coffee was brewing. Keurig says it starts frothing by itself once the brew finishes.
Can I make iced lattes with a Keurig frother?
Yes on the K-Café (press COLD, then LATTE or CAPP) and the K-Café SMART (Cold Froth 1, 2 or 3). The K-Latte guide only describes hot frothing. With the SimpleCafé, Keurig suggests skipping the milk-heating step and adding ice to the coffee.
Can I froth oat or almond milk in a Keurig frother?
The SimpleCafé guide says whole milk works best and recommends Manual mode for dairy alternatives, which lose their bubbles faster. The K-Café guide asks for chilled milk and the SMART guide gives no milk-type rules, so results with plant milks can vary.
How long does a Keurig frother take?
About 3 minutes on the K-Café and K-Latte. Keurig says the SimpleCafé froths in under a minute, after you've warmed the milk. On the SMART, froth time varies with the milk's temperature.
