De'Longhi Magnifica S Leaking Water? 5 Fixes

Where Magnifica S Water Usually Comes From

The Magnifica S book (ECAM20.11X, 21.11X and 22.11X) has no "leaking" row in its troubleshooting table. It does warn about one thing in particular: the drip tray. The tray has a red level indicator. Empty it before the indicator sticks up through the cup tray, or water may overflow "and seep inside or around the machine".

So most water under a Magnifica S comes from three places. The drip tray has overflowed, or the small condensate tray behind it is full. Or wet coffee residue has built up inside the machine. Every switch-on and switch-off also runs a rinse into the drip tray, and that is normal.

Fix 1: Empty the Drip Tray Before the Indicator Rises

Symptoms: water at the front, around the base or on the counter.

What the book says: empty the tray before the red indicator protrudes from the cup tray, or water may overflow "and seep inside or around the machine".

How to fix:

1. Pull out the drip tray and grounds container together.
2. Empty and rinse both. The book says always to empty the grounds container when you remove the drip tray.
3. Push them back in fully.
4. Keep an eye on the red indicator during long sessions.

Fix 2: Empty the Condensate Tray

Symptoms: water keeps appearing even though the drip tray is empty.

What the book says: the Magnifica S has a second, small red condensate tray. Check and empty it whenever you remove the drip tray.

How to fix:

1. Remove the drip tray.
2. Find the small red condensate tray, then empty and rinse it.
3. Refit it, then the drip tray.

Fix 3: Clean Inside the Machine

Symptoms: damp coffee grounds or wet residue behind the drip tray, or water that keeps returning.

What the book says: check "about once a week" that the inside, reached by removing the drip tray, isn't dirty. Remove coffee deposits with a sponge, then the residues with a vacuum cleaner.

How to fix:

1. Turn the machine off with the power button, then unplug it. The book says it must be unplugged before you clean internal parts.
2. Remove the drip tray and grounds container.
3. Wipe out coffee deposits with a sponge, then vacuum the residues.
4. Never immerse the machine in water.

Fix 4: Clean the Infuser and Its Support

Symptoms: wet residue around the infuser door on the right side.

What the book says: clean the infuser "at least once a month". It can't come out while the machine is on.

How to fix:

1. Turn the machine off with the power button.
2. Remove the water tank and open the infuser door on the right side.
3. Press the two coloured release buttons inwards and pull the infuser out.
4. Soak it in water for about 5 minutes, then rinse it under the tap. "Clean the infuser without using washing up liquid as it could be damaged."
5. Clean the coffee residue from the support it sits on.
6. Slide it back and push PUSH until it clicks. Check that the two coloured buttons have snapped out. Close the door and refit the tank.

If it's hard to insert, press its two levers first to adapt it to the right size.

Fix 5: Descale When the Light Flashes

Symptoms: the descale light is flashing, and water is collecting in the tray faster than usual.

What the book says: descale when the control panel light flashes. Use De'Longhi descaler: one 100 ml pack to level A on the back of the tank, then water up to level B. Place a container of at least 1.8 litres under the spouts and the cappuccino maker, then hold the rinse/descale button for at least 5 seconds. The programme runs about 25 minutes before the rinse stages.

Take out the water softener filter first if you use one. Empty the drip tray before and after, because a lot of water goes through.

Water That's Normal

• Switch-on and switch-off rinses: every switch-on runs a preheat and rinse that "cannot be interrupted", and every switch-off after coffee runs one too. That water goes into the drip tray. The Magnifica Start and Dinamica books suggest putting a container under the spouts to save emptying the tray so often.
• Water in the grounds container after a rinse: the Magnifica Start book calls this normal.
• Steam stops after 3 minutes: a safety device. That's not a fault.

When to Contact De'Longhi

The Magnifica S book has no seal, valve or internal part for owners to replace. Contact De'Longhi Customer Services if water keeps appearing with the trays emptied and the inside clean. Also contact them if water comes from under the machine itself, or if the cord or plug is damaged. The book says only Customer Services may replace those.

Why is water pooling under my Magnifica S?
