De'Longhi leaking underneath? Usually it's the drip tray or the red condensate tray, not a seal. The manuals' fixes for the Magnifica, Dinamica and Dedica.

Water Under a De'Longhi Is Usually Not a Broken Seal

Most De'Longhi "leaks" aren't a failed part. On the Magnifica S, Magnifica Start and Dinamica, the water underneath almost always comes from the drip tray, which fills fast because every switch-on and switch-off rinse runs hot water into it. It also comes from a small red condensate tray most owners never knew was there. On a Dedica, water or coffee escaping round the filter holder is its own documented problem with its own fixes.

There's no portafilter or group-head gasket on a Magnifica or Dinamica. Those are bean-to-cup machines with a removable infuser, so gasket-replacement advice written for manual espresso machines doesn't apply to them. What De'Longhi's manuals do describe is below, starting with the checks that fix most leaks in a few minutes.

Try This First

  • Look at the red indicator on the drip tray. It rises as the tray fills. If it's poking up through the cup tray, you've found your leak.
  • Pull the tray and look for the small red tray behind or inside it. That's the condensate tray on the Magnifica S, Magnifica Start and Dinamica.
  • Check whether you've just switched the machine on or off. Both run a rinse that sends hot water from the spouts into the drip tray.
  • On a Dedica, check the filter holder is locked in fully, rotated firmly as far as it will go.
  • Wipe the counter dry and watch. A puddle that grows while the machine sits idle points somewhere different from one that appears only while you brew.

Fix 1: Empty the Drip Tray and the Red Condensate Tray (Works About 45% of the Time)

The drip tray's red level indicator is there because De'Longhi knows what happens when it's ignored. The Magnifica S manual warns: "If the drip tray is not emptied regularly, the water could overflow from the edge and seep inside or around the machine. This could damage the machine, the surface it rests on or the surrounding area." The Dinamica, Dinamica Plus and Dedica manuals carry the same warning.

Signs it's this one: water under the front of the machine, and the red indicator is raised or the tray is full.

  1. Remove the drip tray. On the bean-to-cup models, the grounds container comes out with it. The manuals say always to empty the grounds container when you remove the tray.
  2. Take off the cup tray and drip tray grille, then empty and wash the tray and the grounds container.
  3. Check the red condensate tray (A14 on the Magnifica S and Start, A10 on the Dinamica) and empty it if needed.
  4. Refit everything and push the tray fully home.
  5. From now on, empty it before the red indicator starts to protrude from the cup tray, which is the manual's own rule.

Success Rate: About 45%
Difficulty: Easy

Model notes:

  • Magnifica Start: the manual calls the indicator a red float. It works the same way.
  • Dedica: the tray also has a red level indicator. If yours has the mug or glass tray (A10), take that out and clean it too.
  • Dishwasher: on the Dinamica and Dinamica Plus, only the drip tray grille (and the milk container) may go in a dishwasher.

Fix 2: Recognise Water That Isn't a Leak (Works About 20% of the Time)

A new De'Longhi can look as if it's leaking from day one, because several things the manuals describe as normal put water where you don't expect it.

  • Rinse at switch-on and switch-off. The bean-to-cup machines run a rinse of hot water through the spouts when they heat up, and again when they shut down after making coffee, and it lands in the drip tray. The Magnifica Start and Dinamica manuals suggest leaving a container under the spouts "to avoid the need for frequent emptying of the drip tray".
  • Water in the grounds container. "It is normal for the grounds container to contain water following a rinse cycle" (Magnifica Start). The Dinamica manuals say the same after cleaning.
  • Noises or small puffs of steam when it's idle. That's condensate dripping into the hot vaporiser. "This is part of normal operation. To limit the phenomenon, empty the drip tray" (Magnifica Start, Dinamica Plus).
  • Hot water and steam from the milk spout during CLEAN. "A little hot water and steam leak out of the milk spout" while the milk container cleans itself (Dinamica).

What to do: keep a cup under the spouts when you switch on, empty the drip tray daily, and don't chase a fault until the counter stays wet with the tray empty and seated.

Fix 3: Stop a Dedica Leaking Round the Filter Holder (Works About 20% of the Time)

On the Dedica (EC685, EC695, EC785), espresso that comes out round the edges of the filter holder rather than through the spout holes has its own row in the manual's troubleshooting table, with four causes:

  1. The filter holder isn't fitted properly, or it's dirty. Clean the rim, then "attach the filter holder correctly and rotate firmly as far as it will go."
  2. The spout holes in the filter holder are blocked. Clear them.
  3. The filter is blocked, or the perforated filter is missing. Pull the perforated filter out by its tab, rinse both filters, clear the holes with a pin if needed, and press the perforated filter back down fully.
  4. The espresso boiler gasket has lost its elasticity or is dirty. The manual's instruction is to "have the espresso boiler gasket replaced by Customer Services". It doesn't give it as a home repair.

Also check the dose. If the filter holder is hard to lock in at all, the manual's cause is too much coffee in the filter: use the measure supplied and the right filter for single or double.

⚠️ Safety: let the machine cool before you handle the filter holder. The boiler outlet and the holder get hot.

Fix 4: Empty the Tray Before the Descale Rinse (Works About 10% of the Time)

Descaling sends a lot of water into the drip tray, and on the Dinamica and Dinamica Plus it can ask for a third rinse if the tank wasn't filled to MAX for the first two. The manuals' instruction for that case includes a leak warning: "follow the instructions displayed by the appliance, but first empty the drip tray to avoid the water overflowing." The Dinamica Plus even shows an EMPTY DRIP TRAY message at the steps where it's needed.

  1. Before you start a descale, empty the drip tray and grounds container.
  2. Put a large container under the coffee and hot water spouts.
  3. Fill the tank to MAX for each rinse, so the machine doesn't ask for a third.
  4. Empty the tray whenever the machine tells you to, and again before any extra rinse.

Time: 25-45 minutes, the length of a descale
Cost: De'Longhi descaler
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 5: Check Inside, Then Call De'Longhi (Works About 5% of the Time)

If water keeps appearing with both trays empty and seated, the leak is inside the machine. On the Magnifica S, De'Longhi asks you to check the inside regularly anyway. The area behind the drip tray should be free of coffee deposits, which you can remove with a sponge and a vacuum cleaner.

⚠️ Safety: "Before cleaning internal parts, the machine must be turned off and unplugged from the mains power supply. Never immerse the coffee machine in water."

  1. Turn the machine off with its power button, then unplug it.
  2. Remove the drip tray and look into the opening behind it for water or coffee buildup.
  3. Clean out the deposits, refit the tray and run a rinse on a dry counter.
  4. If water still appears, stop using it and contact De'Longhi Customer Services. On a Dedica, if all the lights flash and it won't work, the manual says to "disconnect the appliance immediately" and contact authorised Customer Services.

When DIY Won't Work

Unplug it and stop using it if water is near the power cord or plug, water keeps appearing with both trays empty, you smell burning, or a Dedica flashes all its lights and won't work.

Warranty and support: De'Longhi's instruction books send you to Customer Services when a problem isn't solved by the listed remedies. The contact details are on the Customer Service sheet in the box, or on the guarantee. Taking the housing apart yourself isn't one of the manual's remedies.

Repair or replace: a bean-to-cup machine that leaks from inside is worth a Customer Services quote before you replace it, since these machines cost several hundred dollars new.

Prevention

  • Empty the drip tray before the red indicator protrudes, and glance at it every day.
  • Check the red condensate tray every time the drip tray comes out.
  • Keep a cup under the spouts at switch-on to catch the rinse water.
  • Fill the tank to MAX before each descale rinse, and empty the tray first.
  • On a Dedica, rinse the filter after each use and clean the filters at least once a month.
  • Use De'Longhi descaler. The Dedica manual warns that an unsuitable descaler can cause faults not covered by the guarantee.

FAQ

Why is my De'Longhi leaking water underneath?

Usually the drip tray has overflowed, or the small red condensate tray is full. De'Longhi's manuals warn that an overflowing tray can seep inside or around the machine. Empty both, refit them fully, and watch the red level indicator from then on. If water still appears with both trays empty, contact Customer Services.

Is it normal for a brand-new De'Longhi to leak?

Some water is normal. Switching on, and switching off after making coffee, both run a rinse into the drip tray, and water in the grounds container after a rinse is normal too, according to the manual. A new machine can fill its tray faster than you expect. Water that keeps appearing with the trays empty is not normal.

Why does my De'Longhi puff steam and drip when it's off?

It's condensate dripping into the hot vaporiser after use. The Magnifica Start and Dinamica Plus manuals call it "part of normal operation", and the fix is to empty the drip tray, which limits it.

Why does my Dedica leak from the group head?

On the Dedica, that's espresso escaping round the filter holder. The manual lists four causes: the holder isn't fitted and rotated fully, the spout holes are blocked, the filter is blocked or the perforated filter is missing, or the espresso boiler gasket has worn. The gasket is a Customer Services job.

Can I replace the gasket on a Magnifica myself?

The Magnifica S, Magnifica Start and Dinamica are bean-to-cup machines with a removable infuser, not a portafilter group head, so there's no group gasket to swap. The infuser itself is cleaned monthly with plain water, never detergent. For leaks that persist, the manuals send you to Customer Services.
