DeLonghi brew head clogged, leaking, or broken? Step-by-step guide for cleaning, descaling, and replacing the brew head on Magnifica, Magnifica Evo, La Specialista, Dedica, and Dinamica models.
DeLonghi Brew Head Cleaning & Replacement Guide (Magnifica, La Specialista, Dedica)
Brew Head Problems: What They Look Like
A DeLonghi that pulls shots slowly, produces weak espresso, leaks around the portafilter, or refuses to flow at all usually has a brew head issue. Most brew head problems are either a cleaning job (free, 10 minutes) or a gasket replacement ($5–15, 20 minutes) — not a reason to replace the machine. This guide covers both the removable brew unit found in bean-to-cup machines and the portafilter group head used in manual and semi-automatic models.
Models covered: Magnifica (ESAM03110, ESAM3300), Magnifica Evo (ECAM29063), La Specialista (EC9335M, EC9155MB), Dedica (EC685M, EC680M), Dinamica (ECAM35020W), Stilosa (EC230BK)
Two Different Brew Head Systems
DeLonghi machines use one of two fundamentally different brew group designs:
Bean-to-Cup Brew Unit (Magnifica, Dinamica, Magnifica Evo, Magnifica Evo): A self-contained plastic mechanism that doses, tamps, and extracts coffee automatically. It slides out completely from a side door for cleaning. Components: brew group piston, filter basket, waste chute, shower screen.
Portafilter Group Head (La Specialista, Dedica, Stilosa): A traditional espresso machine design — a metal portafilter handle locks into a group head. Components: group head body, rubber gasket, shower screen, portafilter basket.
The cleaning and replacement steps differ significantly between these two types.
Bean-to-Cup Brew Unit: Cleaning (Magnifica, Dinamica, Magnifica Evo)
Step 1 — Remove the Brew Unit
- Turn the machine on and wait for it to complete its startup sequence
- Open the side door — on most Magnifica models this is on the left side; on some Dinamica models it is on the front below the spout
- Locate the grey plastic brew unit lever or release button
- Turn the machine off before removing — the brew unit must only be removed with power off
- Press the release button and slide the unit straight toward you. It should come out smoothly.
Note: The brew unit will have damp coffee grounds in it after recent use — hold it over the sink.
Step 2 — Rinse Under Running Water
- Rinse the entire brew unit under warm (not hot) running water
- Do not use soap, detergent, or a dishwasher — these degrade the rubber seals and plastic housing
- Use a soft nylon brush to remove ground coffee from the filter screen and piston face
- Rinse until the water runs completely clear with no brown color
- Shake off excess water but do not dry with a cloth — cloth fibers can catch on the seals
Recommended frequency: Every 200–300 coffees. The machine will display a "Clean Brew Unit" prompt when due — do not ignore it.
Step 3 — Check and Clean the Shower Screen
The shower screen (the small perforated disc at the top of the brew unit where water enters) accumulates scale over time:
- Locate the screen at the top of the brew unit — it's a small disc with many fine holes
- Hold it up to light and check for white or brown crust blocking the holes
- If clogged: soak the entire brew unit head section in a bowl of 50% white vinegar and 50% water for 20 minutes
- Use a pin or toothpick to clear each individual hole
- Rinse thoroughly until no vinegar smell remains
Step 4 — Reinstall and Test
- Slide the brew unit back into the machine until it clicks firmly into position
- Close the side door completely
- Turn the machine on and run a clean water rinse cycle before brewing coffee — this purges any residue from the reinstallation
- Pull a test shot: extraction should take 25–30 seconds for a single espresso
Portafilter Group Head: Cleaning and Gasket Replacement (La Specialista, Dedica, Stilosa)
Regular Group Head Cleaning
- Remove the portafilter by turning counterclockwise — it should release with a quarter turn
- Inspect the rubber group gasket — the circular rubber ring visible inside the group head opening. It should appear smooth, slightly flexible, and sit fully flush in its groove.
- Wipe the group head face with a damp cloth, removing coffee oils and spent grounds from around the gasket and the flat seating surface
- Inspect the shower screen — the flat perforated disc directly above where the portafilter basket sits:
- It is secured by a single central screw on most DeLonghi portafilter models
- Remove it with a flathead screwdriver
- Soak in a cup of hot water with one espresso machine cleaning tablet (Cafiza or Puly Caff) for 15 minutes
- Rinse completely and reinstall
Replacing the Group Head Gasket (Dedica, La Specialista)
Signs the gasket needs replacement:
- Coffee or water leaking from the portafilter joint during extraction
- The portafilter feels loose, wobbly, or locks past its normal stop position
- The rubber gasket appears flattened, shiny from compression, or shows visible cracks
Finding the right gasket:
- Dedica (EC685M, EC680M): Requires a 73mm × 57mm × 8mm group head gasket. Compatible with most standard IMS or Cafelat replacements.
- La Specialista (EC9335M, EC9155MB): Uses a different specification — check your exact model number before ordering.
- Stilosa (EC230BK): Budget machine; the gasket is 71mm × 56mm × 8mm.
- Generic replacement gaskets from Amazon or coffee equipment suppliers typically cost $4–8. Silicone gaskets last longer than rubber (18–24 months vs 12 months) and are worth the slight premium.
Replacement steps:
- Remove the shower screen and its retaining screw (as described above)
- Use a thin flathead screwdriver to lever the old gasket out of its groove — insert the tip at one point on the gasket edge and work around the full circumference. Do not dig straight in or you may score the group head body.
- Clean the groove thoroughly: Remove any rubber residue, scale, or coffee deposits with a damp cloth. The new gasket must seat against a clean surface.
- Install the new gasket: Press it firmly into the groove with your fingers, working around the circumference evenly. The gasket should sit completely flat with no sections bulging up or sitting proud.
- Reinstall the shower screen and screw
- Insert the portafilter and test the lock: it should require moderate resistance — firm but not requiring excessive force
- Pull a test shot without coffee to confirm no leaking from the joint
Time: 15–20 minutes | Cost: $4–15 | Difficulty: Easy
Deep Descaling for Scale-Clogged Brew Heads
If cleaning the brew unit doesn't restore flow, scale buildup inside the brew path requires a full descale cycle.
Signs the brew path is scale-clogged:
- Extraction takes 35+ seconds for a single shot
- Machine prompts the descale warning repeatedly, even after recent descaling
- Pump makes a labored grinding sound during extraction
- Coffee output is significantly reduced from normal volume
DeLonghi descaling procedure:
- Use DeLonghi EcoDecalk (strongly recommended) or a citric acid solution — white vinegar is less effective on DeLonghi's stainless steel boiler systems and leaves a taste residue in the machine
- Empty and remove the water tank
- Mix 1 full bottle of EcoDecalk (100ml) with 1 liter of fresh cold water in the tank
- Place a 1.5-liter container under both the steam wand and the coffee outlet
- Select Descale mode: This varies by model. On most Magnifica models: turn the dial to "Steam" and hold both the "1 cup" and "2 cup" buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds. Consult your manual for the exact sequence — DeLonghi changes it across product generations.
- Follow the on-screen prompts or indicator light sequence — the full cycle takes 25–30 minutes
- When prompted, fill the tank with 1 liter of plain water and run the rinse cycle
- Run one additional rinse cycle with a freshly filled plain water tank
Time: 35–40 minutes | Cost: $8–12 for EcoDecalk
When to Replace the Brew Unit Entirely
For bean-to-cup machines, the removable brew unit eventually reaches end of life:
Signs a replacement is needed:
- Visible cracks in the plastic housing of the brew unit body
- The piston no longer moves smoothly up and down even after thorough rinsing and drying
- Coffee grounds consistently appear in the output (broken or deformed filter screen)
- Machine reports "Brew Unit Error" that does not clear after proper cleaning and reinsertion
- The brew unit no longer clicks into the locked position properly
Replacement cost: Third-party DeLonghi brew units for Magnifica models cost $35–55. Genuine DeLonghi OEM units cost $60–80. This repair is cost-effective on machines under 5 years old; less so on older machines with other wear issues.
Where to buy: DeLonghi's own website, Amazon, or specialist coffee parts suppliers like CoffeePartsDirect or Whole Latte Love carry replacement brew units by model number.

FAQ
How do I tell if my DeLonghi brew unit is broken versus just dirty?
Remove the brew unit and test the piston manually: push the flat piston disc upward and downward with moderate finger pressure after rinsing. On a functioning unit, it should move smoothly with moderate resistance throughout its travel. If the piston sticks partway, moves unevenly, or won't move at all even after a thorough rinse, the unit has a mechanical fault. If it moves freely once rinsed, the issue is scale or a clogged screen — cleaning will fix it.
My DeLonghi shows "Clean Brew Unit" every time I turn it on, even after cleaning. Why?
Magnifica models detect brew unit removal via a physical position sensor. If the unit is not fully seated, the sensor doesn't register the cleaning. Remove the unit again and check for coffee grounds around the door frame that might be preventing full insertion — even a small obstruction stops the unit from reaching the locked position. Push firmly until you feel a definitive click. If the message persists after confirmed seating, turn the machine off at the main power switch (not just the button), wait 30 seconds, and restart.
Can I use the Magnifica brew unit in the dishwasher?
No. DeLonghi explicitly states the brew unit should only be rinsed under running water. Dishwasher heat and detergents accelerate seal degradation and cause the plastic housing to warp, leading to piston binding and water bypass. A dishwasher-damaged brew unit is not covered under warranty.
My portafilter leaks even with a new gasket. What am I missing?
Three possible causes: (1) the gasket is the wrong size for your model — double-check the exact dimensions against the spec for your DeLonghi model number; (2) the gasket is not fully seated in its groove — remove it and reinstall carefully, pressing evenly around the full circumference; (3) the group head seating surface is scored or damaged from extended use with a worn gasket — if there are visible grooves or pitting on the metal surface, the group head body itself may need replacement.
