Keurig K-Mini Leaking? 5 Fixes (K-Mini & K-Mini Plus)

Where a K-Mini Leak Actually Comes From

A K-Mini holds no water between cups. You pour in what you need, 6 to 12 oz, between the MIN and MAX lines, and it all goes through. So a leak almost always traces back to that cup's water: spilled while filling, overfilled past MAX, backed up behind a clogged needle, or caught by an 8 oz drip tray that's full.

The K-Mini and K-Mini Plus Use & Care Guides have no "leaking" row, and they list no seal or valve for owners to replace. The two machines are close: the K-Mini Plus adds a STRONG button, pod storage and a removable water reservoir. Everything else here applies to both.

Try This First

• Check the fill line. Pour between MIN and MAX. The guides say to measure the water in your mug first and pour that in.
• Empty the drip tray. It holds up to 8 oz, and it slides out toward you.
• Wipe the top dry. Water spilled while pouring runs down the outside and looks like a leak underneath.
• K-Mini Plus: lift the reservoir off and set it back so it sits properly.

Fix 1: Clear the Exit Needle and Pod Holder

A clogged exit needle traps water in the pod. That gives a short cup, and water can spill around the pod holder. It's the first cause the guides give for a partial cup.

Signs it's this one: less coffee than the water you poured in, water around the pod holder, or grounds in the cup.

1. Turn the brewer off and unplug it.
2. Lift the handle. Grasp the top of the pod holder and push up from underneath until it releases.
3. Pull the funnel off. Push a straightened paper clip into the exit needle on the inside bottom of the holder and move it around.
4. Wash the holder and funnel. Snap the funnel back on.
5. Line the holder up with the two front ribs and snap it in from the top.

⚠️ Caution: the guides warn of sharp needles above and inside the pod holder. Keep your fingers out of it.

Fix 2: Clear the Entrance Needle and Purge

The entrance needle under the lid has two holes. If grounds block them, water can't get into the pod properly.

1. Lift the handle and hold it up.
2. Push a straightened paper clip into both holes of the entrance needle. Move it around gently.
3. Lower the handle and run two water-only brews with no pod.
4. Purge: press the power button, then press and hold the brew button for 5 seconds until all the water has been dispensed. Discard it and press power to restart.

Fix 3: Fill Between MIN and MAX, Then Close the Lid

The reservoir on a K-Mini takes one cup's water at a time. Pour past MAX, or pour fast, and the overflow runs down the brewer.

1. Measure the water in your mug first: 6 oz minimum, 12 oz maximum.
2. Lift the reservoir lid and pour it in slowly. Stay between MIN and MAX.
3. Lower the lid before brewing.
4. K-Mini Plus: the reservoir lifts off for filling. Set it back properly before you brew.

The guides don't give a fix for under-filling, but they do say what happens: below the minimum it won't brew. "Add an additional 2oz of water … then press the brew button." More on that in our K-Mini won't brew guide.

Fix 4: Empty and Refit the Drip Tray

The drip tray takes overflow and drips. It holds up to 8 oz, so one overfilled brew can fill it.

1. Slide the tray toward you, keeping it level.
2. Empty and clean it with a damp, soapy, lint-free cloth.
3. Slide it back in fully. After using a travel mug with the tray removed, put the tray back before the next normal cup.

Fix 5: Descale Every 3-6 Months

Scale builds up on the parts that heat and carry water, and the guides say it "can hinder brewer performance". If cups have been getting shorter and the needles are clear, descale.

1. Turn the brewer on. Pour one third (4.6 oz) of a bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution into the reservoir, then add fresh water to the 10 oz line.
2. Put a large ceramic mug on the tray. Lift and lower the handle with no pod. Press brew, then empty the mug.
3. Repeat step 1. When the brew light turns solid and it starts to dispense, press power. Let it stand at least 30 minutes.
4. Press and hold brew until all the solution has dispensed. Empty the mug.
5. Rinse with 12 oz of fresh water, three times in all.

It takes about 45 minutes. Foam is normal.

If little or nothing comes out, then air: the brewer is heavily scaled. Turn it off, unplug it, rinse the reservoir, and repeat the fresh-water rinse. If it persists, leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes.

When DIY Won't Work

Unplug it and stop using it if water reaches the cord or outlet, or appears under the brewer when nothing is brewing.

The guides set the limit: if it still brews a partial cup after two descales, contact Customer Service. "Beyond these recommended cleaning and maintenance procedures, this brewer is not user serviceable." Opening the case isn't an owner repair. Call Keurig at 1-866-901-BREW (2739). The K-Mini and K-Mini Plus have a limited one-year warranty in the US and Canada, and you'll need an RMA number before sending one back.

Prevention

• Measure the water in your mug before pouring it in.
• Empty the drip tray after a travel mug or a spill.
• Clean both needles whenever grounds turn up.
• Descale every 3-6 months.
• Store it empty and frost-free. After freezing temperatures, let it warm up for at least 2 hours.
• Don't use distilled water. Both guides say so.

FAQ

Why does my K-Mini leak from the bottom?

Usually water spilled while filling, a reservoir filled past MAX, or a full drip tray. The K-Mini keeps no water between cups, so a puddle with nothing brewing should be checked by Keurig.

Does the K-Mini Plus leak in different places?

Only one: its reservoir lifts off, so set it back properly after filling. Otherwise it's built like the K-Mini.

Can I wash the K-Mini Plus reservoir?

Yes. Its guide says to clean it with a damp, soapy, non-abrasive cloth and rinse it thoroughly, so no cleaning solution gets into the water. Don't dry the inside with a cloth, because lint stays behind.

Is water left in the drip tray normal?

Yes. The tray catches drips and holds up to 8 oz. Empty it now and then.
