Who Replaces De'Longhi Burrs?

De'Longhi's service centres do, on every model we have a manual for. The La Specialista manuals say it outright: when the dose keeps falling because the burrs are worn, a customer services centre replaces them. The Magnifica S, Magnifica Start and Dinamica books have no grinder or burr procedure at all.

What owners can do depends on the machine:

• La Specialista Prestigio, Maestro and the original La Specialista (EC9335): lift out the upper burr to clean it or clear foreign matter, then refit it.
• La Specialista Arte: brush the grinder and coffee funnel, and vacuum the hopper if it's clogged.
• Magnifica S, Start, Dinamica: adjust the grind while it's grinding, and keep the pre-ground funnel clear.

Is It the Burrs?

The La Specialista manuals list worn burrs as one cause of a dose that won't reach the "perfect dose" mark, alongside things you can fix:

Arte: settings 1-2 are "very fine, for light roasts or to compensate worn burrs".

Remove and Clean the Upper Burr (Prestigio, Maestro)

The manual allows this for cleaning, or "if it becomes blocked with foreign matter".

1. Remove the bean container. Turn it anticlockwise, after running the mill empty.
2. Attach the portafilter and run the mill without beans.
3. Turn the appliance off.
4. Turn the grinding selector anticlockwise as far as it goes, to REMOVE.
5. Lift out the upper burr by its handle.
6. Clean it with a brush and vacuum up the residue.
7. Refit the burr, select a grind level, and pull the handle to check it's locked. It shouldn't move.
8. Refit the bean container until the arrow lines up with the padlock and it clicks.

At REMOVE, the "!" light flashes because the setting is out of range. Move back within the 8 levels while grinding.

Clean the Grinder (La Specialista Arte)

1. Brush the attachment area and the coffee funnel with the brush supplied.
2. If the grinder runs but nothing comes out, set the selector to 8 and vacuum all the beans out of the hopper, then clean it.
3. Wipe the bean container with a cloth only: no dishwasher, tap or soap.

The Arte manual describes no owner burr removal.

Bean-to-Cup Models (Magnifica S, Magnifica Start, Dinamica)

These books list neither the bean container nor the coffee mill in their cleaning instructions, and describe no burr removal. Their grinder care is:

• Turn the grinding dial only while the mill is running, one click at a time. "Do not turn more than one click at a time otherwise the coffee could be delivered a drop at a time."
• Check the pre-ground coffee funnel about once a month and clear it with the brush.
• Don't use caramelised or candied beans: "they could stick to the coffee mill and damage it" (Magnifica S).
• Never put beans in the pre-ground funnel.
