Nespresso CitiZ Not Heating? 4 Fixes for Lukewarm Coffee

Lukewarm CitiZ Coffee Has Two Official Causes

Nespresso's CitiZ manuals answer "coffee is not hot enough" in two lines: preheat the cup, and descale if necessary. That's the whole official list, for both the classic CitiZ (EN167) and the CitiZ Platinum. Neither manual describes a temperature setting, so you can't have turned the heat down by accident.

Start with the cup. A small espresso cools fast in a cold cup. If that doesn't fix it, scale is the next suspect, and the classic CitiZ has no light to warn you: it's descaled on a cup count. Two things to rule out first: a machine that's still heating, and the Platinum's fast-blinking error signal.

• Warm the cup with hot water, then pour a coffee and compare.
• Wait for steady lights. Blinking means heating, about 25 seconds on the classic CitiZ and about 30 on the Platinum.
• Count your cups since the last descale. In hard water the classic CitiZ is due every 300 cups.

Fix 1: Preheat the Cup (Works About 40% of the Time)

It's the first remedy in both manuals: "Preheat cup." An Espresso is only 40 ml, so a cold ceramic cup takes a big share of its heat.

1. Fill the cup with hot water, from the kettle or, on the Platinum, the Hot water button.
2. Leave it a minute, then empty it.
3. Brew straight into the warm cup.

Platinum tip: lift the lever and eject any capsule before running hot water, as its manual says, or coffee drops end up in the water.

Fix 2: Descale (Works About 35% of the Time)

"Descale if necessary" is the manuals' second answer, and scale also explains coffee that "comes out very slowly", another row in the same table. The classic CitiZ gives no warning: the manual tells you to descale after a cup count that depends on your water.

The CitiZ Platinum warns you instead. Its descaling alert blinks at level 1 and stays steady at level 2, when the manual says to "descale machine immediately to avoid machine performance and coffee quality decrease".

Classic CitiZ in brief:

1. Remove the capsule and close the lever. Empty the drip tray and capsule container.
2. Put 0.5 L of water and 1 Nespresso descaling sachet in the tank, with a 1 L container under the outlet.
3. With the machine on, hold Espresso + Lungo for 3 seconds until both lights blink.
4. Press Lungo until the tank is empty, pour the solution back in, and run it again.
5. Rinse the tank, fill it with fresh water, and run it through with Lungo.
6. Hold Espresso + Lungo for 3 seconds to exit.

Fix 3: Let It Finish Heating (Works About 15% of the Time)

The lights blink while the machine heats and go steady when it's ready. The classic CitiZ also turns itself off after 9 minutes unused (the setting can be changed to 30), so the first cup after a break starts from cold.

1. Press Espresso or Lungo to switch on.
2. Wait for steady lights before judging the temperature.
3. If you press a coffee button while the lights blink, that's fine: the manual says the coffee will flow automatically once the machine is ready.

To keep it on longer between cups, the classic CitiZ can switch to a 30-minute Auto Off. With the machine off, hold Espresso for 3 seconds, press Espresso to choose, and hold Lungo for 3 seconds to exit.

Fix 4: CitiZ Platinum: Clear the Fast-Blinking Error (Works About 5% of the Time)

The Platinum's troubleshooting table has a row for all beverage buttons blinking fast: "Machine is in error, overheating or in an environment below 0 °C / 32 °F." Nespresso's steps:

1. Wait for the buttons to stop blinking. This can take a few minutes.
2. If they're still blinking after a few minutes, unplug and replug the machine.
3. If it persists, call Nespresso.

Move the machine away from cold spots too, such as an unheated porch or a window in winter. The manual designs it for indoor, non-extreme temperatures.

When DIY Won't Work

Contact Nespresso if:

• Coffee stays lukewarm in a preheated cup after a full descale
• The lights blink irregularly. The classic manual says "Send the appliance for repair"

• Fill with fresh, cold drinking water, and replace water left standing over a weekend.

FAQ

Can I turn up the temperature on a Nespresso CitiZ?

Not according to either manual. The classic CitiZ's settings are cup volumes and Auto Off, and the Platinum adds water hardness. Neither lists a temperature setting. Preheating the cup and descaling are the two fixes the manuals give.

Why is my CitiZ lukewarm after descaling?

Check the descale actually finished. On the classic CitiZ, the solution runs through twice, then fresh water, and you exit with Espresso + Lungo for 3 seconds. If it did finish, preheat the cup. That's the manual's other answer to coffee that isn't hot enough.

Does the CitiZ have a descale light?

The classic CitiZ doesn't; you descale by cup count, every 300 to 1,200 cups depending on water hardness. The CitiZ Platinum has a descaling alert that blinks (level 1) and then stays on (level 2).
