Breville built the Infuser around a thermocoil that heats water to brewing temperature in seconds instead of minutes -- and that speed is exactly why it scales faster than the dual-boiler machines higher up Breville's lineup. A thermocoil has far less thermal mass than a boiler, so the same amount of mineral buildup affects it sooner and more noticeably.

When to descale: every 60-90 days on average tap water, monthly in hard water regions. What You'll Need

  • Breville descaling solution or citric acid (15g dissolved in 1 liter of water)
  • A container of at least 1 liter to catch runoff from the group head and steam wand
  • About 45 minutes, mostly hands-off

Step 1: Prep the Machine

  1. Empty the water tank completely
  2. Mix the descaler (or citric acid) into the tank -- follow the sachet's water ratio, or use the full 1 liter citric acid mix
  3. Remove the portafilter -- don't run the cycle with it locked in
  4. Place a large container (2 liters is safer than the minimum) under both the group head and the steam wand
  5. Empty the drip tray so you can see if it fills unexpectedly during the cycle

Step 2: Enter Descale Mode

  1. With the machine powered on, press and hold POWER and PROGRAM simultaneously
  2. Hold until the CLEAN/DESCALE light pulses rapidly -- that confirms descale mode is active, distinct from the light's normal steady "due for descale" state
  3. Press POWER once to begin the cycle

Step 3: Run the Automated Cycle

  1. The machine pulls solution through the group head and, at a separate stage, the steam wand -- let both stages complete without interrupting
  2. The light pulses differently when the tank runs empty, signaling the solution stage is done
  3. Don't top off with more descaler at this point -- move to the rinse

Step 4: Rinse

  1. Empty the tank completely, rinse it under the tap, and refill with plain water
  2. Press POWER to start the rinse stage
  3. Let the full rinse cycle complete through both the group head and steam wand
  4. Empty and refill the tank a second time if the machine prompts for a second rinse pass -- don't skip it if it does

  1. Pull one blank shot -- water only, no coffee, no portafilter locked -- and confirm the flow looks and sounds normal
  2. Run the steam wand for 10-15 seconds and confirm steam pressure feels back to normal
  3. Reinstall the portafilter and resume normal use

If the CLEAN Light Won't Turn Off

  • The exit sequence needs the rinse stage to fully complete -- if you cut it short, the light often stays on. Run the rinse again in full.

Can I use vinegar instead of Breville's descaler?
