Regular cleaning keeps your Nespresso brewing at full speed. This guide covers the descaling cycle, drip tray, capsule container, and water tank — with model-specific steps for Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Next, Pixie, Essenza Mini, and CitiZ.
How to Clean a Nespresso Machine: Complete Guide (Vertuo & OriginalLine)
Why Cleaning Your Nespresso Actually Matters
Nespresso machines are remarkably low maintenance — but "low maintenance" isn't "no maintenance." Skipping regular cleaning leads to three specific problems: stale coffee oil buildup that turns brews bitter, mineral scale that slows flow and eventually kills the pump, and capsule residue that causes recognition errors in Vertuo machines.
This guide covers both the Vertuo line (Vertuo Pop, Vertuo Next, Vertuo Plus, Vertuo Pop+) and the OriginalLine (Pixie, Essenza Mini, CitiZ, Inissia, Creatista). The machines look and work differently, so I've noted where the procedures diverge.
How often: Daily rinse (30 seconds), weekly basic clean (5 minutes), descaling every 2–3 months.
Daily Rinse: 30 Seconds
This is the single most effective habit for keeping your Nespresso tasting fresh.
After every brewing session:
- Remove the used capsule from the capsule container (Vertuo) or capsule chamber (OriginalLine).
- Place a cup or container under the coffee spout.
- Run a plain hot water cycle with no capsule — on most models, just close the head and press the button once.
- Let about 50ml of hot water run through, then discard.
This flushes coffee oils from the brewing head before they oxidize. Coffee oil residue is the primary cause of bitter-tasting Nespresso coffee — not stale capsules.
Weekly Clean: 5 Minutes
This covers the removable parts that collect the most residue.
Drip Tray and Capsule Container
Vertuo machines (Pop, Next, Plus):
- Pull out the drip tray assembly by lifting and pulling forward.
- Remove the capsule container from the top of the drip tray.
- Empty and rinse both under warm running water.
- Use a soft brush or sponge to scrub the inside of the capsule container — used Vertuo capsules leave a fine coffee residue that builds up.
- Wipe down the drip tray grid with a damp cloth.
- Let both dry, then reinsert the capsule container, then the drip tray.
OriginalLine machines (Pixie, Essenza Mini, CitiZ):
- Pull the drip tray straight out.
- The used capsule container is built into the drip tray on most OriginalLine models — flip it open to empty capsules.
- Rinse under warm water, scrub the coffee residue from the capsule compartment walls.
- Dry and reinsert.
Coffee Spout
The coffee spout is the most-overlooked part of any Nespresso machine. Coffee oils collect inside the outlet nozzle and turn rancid within days.
- Remove the spout if it's detachable (Vertuo Plus and most OriginalLine models — it pulls straight down).
- Rinse under warm water. Use a toothpick or cocktail brush to clean the inside of the nozzle.
- On machines with a fixed spout, wipe the outlet with a damp cloth and run the daily rinse cycle.
Water Tank
- Remove the tank from the back or side (depending on model).
- Empty any remaining water — don't top up stale water, always start fresh.
- Rinse the inside with cold water. Every 2–4 weeks, fill with cold water and add a small drop of dish soap, swirl, and rinse thoroughly.
- Refill with fresh cold water before reinserting.
Descaling: Every 2–3 Months
Descaling is the most important maintenance task and the one most people skip. Scale (calcium carbonate) builds up inside the boiler and tubing and, if left long enough, permanently damages the pump. In hard-water areas (midwest, southwest US), descale every 6–8 weeks. In soft-water areas, every 3–4 months is fine.
What you'll need:
- Nespresso descaling kit (about $10 for a 2-use bottle) — or a Nespresso-compatible descaler
- Large container (at least 1 liter capacity)
- About 30 minutes
Important: Use only Nespresso-approved descaler or a solution with citric acid. Vinegar works but it's not recommended — the acetic acid can damage the rubber seals over time, and the smell lingers in subsequent brews.
Vertuo Pop / Vertuo Next / Vertuo Plus Descaling
- Empty and remove the capsule container.
- Fill the water tank with 500ml of fresh water, then add the full Nespresso descaler packet.
- Place a container of at least 1 liter under the coffee outlet.
- Enter descaling mode:
- Vertuo Pop: With the machine on, press and hold the button for 7 seconds until orange light blinks.
- Vertuo Next: With the head locked, press the button 3 times in 2 seconds.
- Vertuo Plus: Slide the lever to unlock, press the button 3 times quickly, then lock.
- The machine will run the descale solution through in two phases — a slow flow phase and a rinse phase.
- When the tank empties, the machine pauses. Refill with 500ml of fresh water (no descaler) for the rinse cycle.
- Press the button to continue the rinse.
- When complete, the light returns to steady white.
- Run one additional water-only brew cycle before making coffee.
OriginalLine Descaling (Pixie, Essenza Mini, CitiZ, Inissia)
- Empty and remove the used capsule container.
- Fill the water tank with 500ml of fresh water and the full descaler packet.
- Place a container of at least 1 liter under both the coffee outlet and the steam nozzle.
- Enter descaling mode:
- Pixie / Essenza Mini: Hold both the short and long coffee buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds until they blink.
- CitiZ: Hold both coffee buttons for 3 seconds.
- Inissia: Hold both buttons for 3 seconds.
- Press the large coffee button to start. The machine runs the descaler through at a slow flow rate.
- When the tank empties, refill with 500ml of fresh water for the rinse cycle and press the large coffee button again.
- After rinsing, both buttons return to steady green — descale mode exits automatically.
- Run a plain water cycle before your first coffee.
Cleaning the Brewing Head (OriginalLine Only)
OriginalLine machines have an exposed brewing head — the needle that punctures the capsule and the capsule housing that makes contact with the coffee. This area accumulates fine coffee grounds that can block the needle.
Every 30 brews or monthly:
- Open the machine head without a capsule inside.
- Inspect the puncture needle (the thin spike that pierces the top of the capsule). If grounds are visible, use a toothpick to gently clear the hole.
- Wipe the inside of the capsule chamber with a damp cloth.
- Close and run a water-only rinse cycle.
For machines with the Nespresso capsule cleaning tool (included with some models), use it monthly per the included instructions — it's a small silicone pod that scrubs the brewing head while running a water cycle.
Cleaning the Barcode Reader (Vertuo Only)
Vertuo machines read a barcode on each capsule rim to set brewing parameters. If the barcode reader lens gets smudged with coffee splatter, the machine may show "capsule not recognized" errors or brew at the wrong settings.
- Open the brewing head (lift the handle on the Vertuo Pop/Next, turn the lever on the Vertuo Plus).
- Look inside the head at the round black window on the inner rim — that's the barcode reader.
- Wipe it gently with a dry cotton swab or a clean, dry cloth. Don't use water directly on the lens.
- Close the head and test with a fresh capsule.
If the reader was visibly dirty and the capsule error clears after cleaning, that was the problem. Do this whenever you see capsule recognition errors.
Descaling Indicator Lights
Nespresso uses light patterns to tell you when descaling is needed:
| Machine | Descale Alert |
|---|---|
| Vertuo Pop | Orange light pulses twice repeatedly |
| Vertuo Next | Orange light blinks continuously |
| Vertuo Plus | Orange light pattern on startup |
| Pixie | Orange lights on both buttons |
| Essenza Mini | Orange blink pattern |
| CitiZ | Both button lights blink orange |
If the orange descale alert appears, descale within the next few days. The machine still works, but continued use with heavy scale risks pump failure.
FAQ
Can I use vinegar to descale my Nespresso?
Technically yes, but Nespresso doesn't recommend it. White vinegar (5% acetic acid) can descale the boiler, but it's harsher on internal rubber seals than citric-acid-based descalers, and the smell and taste can linger in subsequent brews even after rinsing. The Nespresso descaling kit costs about $5 per use — it's worth using the right product.
How do I know if my Nespresso needs descaling?
Four signs: (1) the orange descale alert light appears, (2) coffee flows slower than usual, (3) the machine takes longer to heat up, or (4) coffee tastes more bitter or flat than normal. Any of these means scale is building up. If all four are present, descale immediately.
My Nespresso says "descale required" but I just descaled it. What's wrong?
Usually one of three causes: (1) you didn't complete the descale cycle fully — the machine needs both the descale phase AND the rinse phase to reset the indicator, (2) you used a third-party descaler that the machine didn't register (some Vertuo machines are finicky about this), or (3) you're in an extremely hard-water area and the machine is scaling faster than the timer expects. For (3), increase your descaling frequency to every 6 weeks.
Can I put Nespresso parts in the dishwasher?
The drip tray, capsule container, and water tank on most Nespresso machines are dishwasher safe on the top rack. The coffee spout is also generally dishwasher safe if removable. Do NOT put the brewing head or anything with electronics near the dishwasher. When in doubt, hand wash — warm water is sufficient for most residue.
How often should I change the Nespresso water filter?
Nespresso Vertuo Plus and some OriginalLine machines have a water filter compartment in the tank. Nespresso recommends replacing the filter every 2 months or after 300 cups. The filter reduces mineral content, which directly extends the time between descaling cycles. If you're descaling more than every 6 weeks, adding or replacing the water filter is a worthwhile fix.
