What the Magnifica Evo Manual Asks For

The Magnifica Evo (ECAM29X.6Y/8Y) manual sets maintenance by prompt and by part, not by a yearly calendar. The machine's lights tell you when the trays, filter and descaling are due, and the rest is a short list of regular jobs:

• After every milk drink: run Clean (B6) on the carafe.
• When the lights ask: empty the grounds container (C4) and the drip tray before its red indicator rises. Descale at C5, and replace the filter at C1.
• About once a month: clean inside the machine and the coffee spouts.
• Regularly: clean the infuser, with water only.

It also says: "no chemical products are required for cleaning purposes", apart from De'Longhi descaler.

Steam-wand Evo? The ECAM29X2Y-4Y version (such as the US ECAM29043SB) has its own manual. The trays, grounds container, monthly inside clean, spouts and infuser are the same. What differs: the steam wand replaces the carafe, descaling takes about 45 minutes, and the filter and settings go through a separate settings button and the steam dial. Each step below notes the difference.

Step 1: After Every Milk Drink

After each milk drink, the B6 Led blinks. Leave the carafe on and put a cup under the milk spout. Press B6, and hot water and steam clean the spout, then stop automatically.

Then either refrigerate the carafe (2 days maximum with milk) or take it apart for a full wash. Wash it in the dishwasher's top basket at 50 °C, or soak it by hand for 30 minutes at 40 °C or more. Clear the connector's air channel with a toothpick.

Steam-wand Evo: after use, put a container under the wand and turn the steam dial to I for a few seconds, then back to 0. When it has cooled, twist the cappuccino maker anticlockwise and pull it off, pull off the nozzle, clear its two holes with a pin, wash the parts in warm water and refit them.

Step 2: Trays and Grounds Container

1. Empty the drip tray before the red level indicator projects from the cup tray.
2. Always empty the grounds container when you remove the drip tray, even if it isn't full.
3. Check the red condensate tray.
4. Refit everything, including the drip tray grille. A missing grille causes steam puffs and water on the counter.

The grounds message also appears 72 hours after the first coffee, even if the container isn't full. The machine has to stay plugged in for that count to work.

Step 3: Monthly: Inside and Spouts

1. Turn the machine off and unplug it. Never immerse it.
2. Remove the drip tray. Clean coffee deposits from inside with a brush and sponge, then vacuum.
3. Wipe the coffee spouts, and clear blocked holes with a toothpick.

Step 4: Clean the Infuser

1. Turn the machine off with the power button. The infuser can't come out while it's on.
2. Remove the tank and open the infuser door on the right.
3. Press the two coloured buttons and pull the infuser out.
4. Soak it about 5 minutes, then rinse: "RINSE WITH WATER ONLY, NO DETERGENTS, NO DISHWASHER."
5. Brush out the housing. Slide the infuser back and press PUSH until it clicks, then check the coloured buttons have snapped out.

The manual mentions no grease.

Step 5: Descale When C5 Lights

1. Fit the hot water spout, and remove the water softener filter.
2. Hold B5 for 5 seconds. Empty the drip tray and grounds container, and empty the tank.
3. Add De'Longhi descaler to level A (100 ml), then water to level B (1 L).
4. Place a 2 L container under the coffee and water spouts, and press B5. It runs about 15 minutes.
5. Rinse twice with the tank filled to MAX, refitting the filter for the second rinse.

It can't be interrupted once started. Set the water hardness correctly, so C5 comes on at the right time.

Steam-wand Evo: about 45 minutes. Hold the descale button 5 seconds until it flashes, press it, and turn the steam dial whenever the Steam light flashes. There's no hot water spout to fit.

Step 6: Water Softener Filter

Replace it when C1 lights, or after 2 months (3 weeks if the machine isn't used), even without the light. Before fitting a new filter, run water through it for more than a minute. Then choose filter INSERTED in the settings menu (hold X2 for 5 seconds) and press B6 when it blinks rapidly.

Steam-wand Evo: hold the settings button 5 seconds, press the descale button (the filter setting), choose a bean symbol for INSERTED and confirm with the descale button. With a 0.5 L container under the wand, turn the steam dial open when Steam flashes, and back to 0 when it flashes again.

How often should I clean the Magnifica Evo infuser?

The Evo manual gives no fixed interval for the infuser. The Magnifica S book says at least monthly. Rinse it with water only.
