Cuisinart Coffee Maker Maintenance Guide (DCC-3200, DCC-3400, SS-15, DGB-900BC — Full Schedule)

The Cuisinart Routine, From the Booklets

Cuisinart's drip booklets ask for very little, and the machine tells you when the main job is due. Wash the carafe, lid and filter basket after use. Change the charcoal water filter every 60 days or 60 uses. Decalcify when the CLEAN light comes on, with 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 water and the CLEAN button held until it flashes. Coffee Centers add a separate descale for the single-serve side. A Grind & Brew adds a chute clean every week or two.

Things the booklets don't include: a monthly "self-clean" separate from decalcifying, a showerhead to unscrew, a reset to clear the CLEAN light, or burr replacement. This schedule leaves those out.

Try This First

• Is the CLEAN light on? That's the descale prompt. On the DCC-3400 it's a red indicator; on the DCC-3000 the Clean light flashes.
• When did you change the charcoal filter? Over 60 days or 60 brews means it's due.
• Coffee Center: do all the single-serve lights flash in sequence when you switch on? That's that side's descale prompt.
• Grind & Brew: continuous beeping means a part isn't in place, or the coffee chute is clogged.

Step 1: Clean After Each Use

1. Unplug and let the machine cool before taking parts off. The reservoir cover can be hot: wait at least 10 minutes.
2. Discard the grounds and the paper filter. Rinse a gold-tone filter so no grounds dry in it.
3. Wash the carafe and lid in warm, soapy water, or put them on the dishwasher's upper rack only.
4. Wash the filter basket the same way.
5. Wipe the area under the filter basket with a damp cloth. Don't put any water in the machine while the filter basket is out.
6. Clean the heating or resting plate without scouring pads or harsh cleansers. Cuisinart says not to use them on any part of the coffeemaker.

Never put the base in water. And "do not dry the inside of the water reservoir with a cloth, as lint may remain".

DCC-3000 Coffee on Demand: the brew basket, coffee reservoir and drip tray can go on the dishwasher's upper rack. The water reservoir and its lid can't. Let the coffee reservoir cool before lifting it out.

Step 2: Replace the Charcoal Water Filter

The charcoal filter cleans the water in the reservoir. The booklets give a fixed interval: every 60 days or 60 uses.

1. Soak the new filter in water for 15 minutes.
2. Rinse it under cold water (the DCC-3000 booklet says to flush it for 10 seconds).
3. Fit it into the holder and snap the holder closed.
4. Slide the holder back down its channel to the base of the reservoir.

Take the charcoal filter out before every decalcifying cycle, and put it back afterward.

Step 3: Decalcify When the CLEAN Light Comes On

Scale builds up at a rate set by "the mineral content of the tap water in your area and the frequency of use". It affects both how the machine works and how the coffee tastes. Cuisinart prints no fixed interval for the drip models: you decalcify "whenever the CLEAN LED indicator lights up". The Coffee Center booklets add "every 3-6 months".

1. Remove the charcoal water filter.
2. Fill the reservoir to capacity with 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 cold water.
3. Press and hold CLEAN until its LED flashes, then release. The machine is in Clean mode.
4. Leave it. When the cycle finishes, it beeps 5 times and shuts off.
5. If CLEAN lights again, repeat with fresh vinegar solution. "One cleaning cycle is usually sufficient."
6. Run one full reservoir of fresh, cold water to rinse.
7. Refit the charcoal filter.

Step 4: Descale the Coffee Center's Single-Serve Side

The SS-15 and SS-20 have a separate 40-ounce reservoir for the single-serve brewer. It's descaled separately, every 3-6 months, or when all the lights flash in sequence as you switch the unit on.

1. Remove the single-serve charcoal filter.
2. Fill the reservoir with 13 oz white vinegar and 26 oz water.
3. Put a 16 oz ceramic mug under the brewer.
4. Hold 6 oz + 8 oz for 2 seconds to start.
5. Empty the mug and repeat until ADD WATER lights. All LEDs light when it's complete.
6. Rinse by repeating the process three times with fresh water.

Step 5: Clear the Single-Serve Needles

The Coffee Center brewer has two needles that can clog with grounds:

1. Exit needle: in the bottom of the capsule holder. Twist the funnel off and clear the needle with a paper clip.
2. Piercing needle: in the brewing chamber. Clear it with a paper clip.
3. Realign the capsule holder arrow to arrow when you refit it.

SS-20: if the 6 oz, 8 oz and 10 oz buttons flash together, the booklet says the unit has overheated. Clean the piercing needle as above and resume.

Step 6: Clean the Grind & Brew Hopper and Chute

The DGB-900BC's booklet suggests "cleaning the hopper and coffee chute every 1-2 weeks depending on frequency of use". Its Quick Reference Guide says to clean the grind chute every 7-10 uses.

1. Unplug the machine.
2. Remove the hopper. Throw away leftover beans, wash the hopper and lid in warm soapy water (or on the upper dishwasher rack), and dry them.
3. Lift the coffee channel cover and clean out the coffee chute. The grind chute lever is there "for easy cleaning".
4. Replace the channel cover (it must be in place before grinding) and the hopper.
5. Don't add water while the hopper is off. Water in the grinder motor can damage it.

The booklet presets the grind to medium and has no burr removal or grinder-cleaner step. Keep the hopper no more than ½ lb: over-packing can jam the grinder.

When It Needs Service

The booklets say the base panel hides no user-serviceable parts ("Repairs should be done only by authorized personnel"). Call Cuisinart if:

• The machine leaks from underneath
• It won't turn on, or a cord or plug is damaged
• It was dropped or damaged in any way

FAQ

How often should I descale a Cuisinart coffee maker?

Whenever the CLEAN light comes on. The drip booklets print no fixed interval because it depends on your water and how often you brew. The Coffee Center booklets add every 3-6 months as a guide, for both sides.

Does Cuisinart have a self-clean cycle?

The CLEAN button runs the decalcifying cycle, with vinegar and water in the reservoir. The booklets don't describe a separate monthly self-clean with plain water.

Can I use Cuisinart descaler instead of vinegar?

The booklets read give white vinegar and water, 1/3 to 2/3, for the carafe side, and 13 oz vinegar to 26 oz water for the Coffee Center's single-serve side. If you use another descaler, follow its own instructions.

Can the Cuisinart carafe go in the dishwasher?

Yes. The carafe and lid can go on the upper rack only, per the DCC-3200, DCC-3400, SS-15 and SS-20 booklets. The DCC-3000's water reservoir and lid are the exception: hand-wash them.

Do I need to clean the showerhead?

The DCC-3200C booklet describes the showerhead but gives no removal or cleaning step. Decalcifying cleans the water path through it. Don't force it off.
