Quick Fix

Flashing HOT BREW button, milk that won't foam, or weak lattes? Fixes for the Mr. Coffee 4-in-1 Latte and Latte Lux, coffee side and frother side.

Coffee Side or Milk Side?

On a Mr. Coffee 4-in-1, start by working out which half has the problem. The two COFFEE buttons (HOT BREW and OVER ICE) run the brewer. The MILK buttons run the separate frother. A flashing coffee button means wait until it stops flashing, then brew. Milk that won't froth is usually the whisk not clicked into the bottom of the jar, or milk filled past its line.

The 4-in-1 is a single-serve machine with no pods. Unlike Mr. Coffee's single-purpose Iced Coffee Maker, it brews a 4 oz concentrated shot for lattes and cappuccinos, a mug of 8 to 16 oz of hot coffee, or iced coffee over ice in its 22 oz tumbler. The frother sits beside it on its own heated mount. Most faults come down to measuring, the filter or that whisk.

This page is written from Mr. Coffee's own manual for the machine, which covers both the Latte (BVMC-LM200BLK) and the Latte Lux (BVMC-LM300GY). The only difference between them is the frother buttons: the Latte has HOT FROTH and COLD FOAM, while the Lux has Hot Latte and Hot Capp in place of HOT FROTH.

Try This First

  • Watch the button you pressed. If HOT BREW or OVER ICE is flashing, Mr. Coffee says to wait until it stops before brewing. See Fix 1.
  • Lift the frother jar off and look at the bottom. The whisk has to be clicked into place there, and Mr. Coffee lists a badly fitted whisk first among its reasons milk won't froth.
  • Check the reservoir isn't empty, or overfilled. Mr. Coffee says not to run the machine without water, and not to pour above the 16 oz max fill line, or the reservoir overflows.
  • Empty the drip tray. Mr. Coffee says to clean it after a few uses to stop it overflowing onto the counter.
  • Try another outlet if no button lights. The plug is polarized. If it fits loosely or the outlet feels warm, the manual says not to use that outlet.

Fix 1: Wait Out the Flashing Button (Works About 30% of the Time)

A flashing HOT BREW or OVER ICE button isn't an error code. Mr. Coffee's only advice for it is to wait until the button stops flashing, then brew. The manual also says to wait a few minutes between coffees so the heater can cool, and that steam is normal when you brew back to back.

Signs it's this one: you've just brewed a shot or a mug and you're making a second drink straight away.

  1. Leave the machine alone until the button stops flashing.
  2. Check the water is in the reservoir and the filter, grounds and showerhead are in place while you wait.
  3. Close the lid, put your cup under the spout and press HOT BREW or OVER ICE again.
  4. Check the button's LED is lit steadily. That means it's brewing.
  5. Making two lattes? Brew both shots first, a few minutes apart, then froth. The frother has its own heater, and Mr. Coffee says to wait about a minute between frothing cycles as well.

If the button keeps flashing long after the machine has cooled, it's no longer a timing issue. The manual gives no other meaning for it, so call Mr. Coffee (see "When DIY Won't Work").

Fix 2: Seat the Whisk and Fill to the Line (Works About 25% of the Time)

The frother spins a whisk at the bottom of the jar to foam the milk, and the warming plate under the jar heats it for hot drinks. Mr. Coffee's FAQ lists three reasons milk won't froth: the whisk isn't properly inserted, there's milk above the latte or cappuccino line, or the milk itself doesn't foam well.

Signs it's this one: warm, flat milk; foam that disappears in seconds; or a frother that stopped part-way.

  1. Unplug and let the jar cool. Hold it by the silicone sleeve, because the bottom gets hot.
  2. Fit the whisk at the bottom of the jar, clicking it in place and fastening it securely, before adding any milk.
  3. Pour cold milk to the right line: 6.5 oz to the latte line for a latte, 5 oz to the capp line for a cappuccino. Never go above the lines.
  4. Put the lid on and set the jar on the mount.
  5. Press the frother button for your drink (HOT FROTH or COLD FOAM, or Hot Latte / Hot Capp on the Lux). Check its LED lights. The cycle stops by itself.
  6. Don't lift the jar off mid-cycle. If you do, press the same button to turn the frother off, then restart the cycle.

Milk matters too. Mr. Coffee says whole milk gives the thickest, creamiest froth. Reduced-fat milk makes a lighter foam, and skim a more stable one. Oat milk varies by brand, and almond milk makes small bubbles that fade quickly. For either, Mr. Coffee suggests trying an oat- or almond-based creamer instead.

Wash the jar after every use. Mr. Coffee says to clean the frothing jar after each use. The jar, its lid and the whisk can all go on the dishwasher's top rack.

Fix 3: Measure the Water and Grounds the Mr. Coffee Way (Works About 20% of the Time)

Every drink on the 4-in-1 has its own measure, and the scoop has two ends: HOT and ICED. Weak or watery coffee almost always means the wrong amount of water, grounds or ice for that drink. Mr. Coffee's FAQ fixes for weak coffee are an extra ½ to 1 scoop, finer grounds and, for hot coffee, brewing with OVER ICE, which pre-infuses the coffee.

Signs it's this one: thin hot coffee, a latte that tastes of milk, or iced coffee with no ice left.

Hot coffee, 16 oz16 oz (the maximum)2 scoopsHOT BREW
Iced coffeeTumbler to the WATER mark1 scoop, ICED side (1½-2 for bolder)OVER ICE
  1. Measure the water in the cup you'll drink from, and read the amount off the reservoir's water ladder.
  2. Use the right end of the scoop, and level it.
  3. Before closing the lid, move the showerhead over the filter. The manual includes this in every latte step.
  4. For iced coffee, fill the tumbler to the ICE marking with large cubes. Bigger cubes melt more slowly, which is Mr. Coffee's answer when no ice is left after the brew.
  5. Still too weak? Add ½ to 1 scoop, try a finer grind, or brew hot coffee with OVER ICE for the pre-infusion.

Fix 4: Stop the Overflow and Counter Spills (Works About 15% of the Time)

Water on the counter usually has one of two everyday causes. Pouring more than 16 oz into the reservoir makes it overflow, which Mr. Coffee warns about on the hot-coffee page. The other is a full drip tray. It catches the few drips that fall after a brew, and Mr. Coffee says to clean it after a few uses so it doesn't overflow.

Signs it's this one: water around the base after filling, or a puddle in front of the machine near the drip tray.

  1. Unplug the machine and let it cool.
  2. Empty and wash the drip tray. Wash its cover by hand, because Mr. Coffee says it isn't dishwasher-safe.
  3. Next time, pour water in slowly and stop at your amount on the water ladder. Never go past the 16 oz max fill line.
  4. Keep grounds out of the reservoir. Mr. Coffee suggests taking the filter out to fill it, so grounds can't fall into the water.
  5. Use the machine on a hard, flat, level surface, as the manual specifies.

If water collects under the machine when the reservoir is filled correctly and the tray is empty, the leak is inside the base. That isn't a home repair. See below.

Fix 5: Fix the Filter Problems (Works About 10% of the Time)

Grounds in the cup and late drips both come from the filter. Mr. Coffee's FAQ says grounds get over the top of an overfilled reusable filter, that decaf is more likely to spill over, and that a paper filter inside the permanent filter causes it too. Paper filters also make the machine keep dripping after the light has gone off.

Signs it's this one: grit at the bottom of the mug, or coffee still dripping from the spout well after the brew ends.

  1. Use the reusable nylon filter on its own. Don't line it with paper.
  2. If you prefer paper, use it instead of the reusable filter. The manual names a standard 5-cup basket-style paper filter.
  3. Use a little less coffee, especially decaf. Don't heap the scoop.
  4. Seat the filter in the brew basket and move the showerhead over it before closing the lid.
  5. After an iced brew, a few drips from the spout are normal, according to Mr. Coffee. The drip tray is there to catch them.

When DIY Won't Work

Stop using it and unplug it if:

  • No button lights in an outlet that powers a lamp.
  • A button keeps flashing long after the machine has cooled, and nothing brews.
  • The frother never starts with the whisk fitted and the LED lit, or the whisk won't turn. An owner on Wayfair reported a whisking mechanism that failed, and the manual gives no owner repair for it.
  • Water leaks from under the base with the reservoir below 16 oz.
  • You smell burning, or the cord or plug is damaged.

Warranty: Mr. Coffee gives a 1-year limited warranty from the date of purchase, and you'll need proof of purchase. Don't take it back to the store for repair. Call 1-800-MR COFFEE (1-800-672-6333) with the model number from the bottom of the machine and the purchase date. Mr. Coffee says there are no user-serviceable parts inside. The warranty doesn't cover disassembly or repair by anyone other than Sunbeam or its authorized service centers.

Repair or replace: out of warranty, a dead brewer or frother on a single-serve machine is rarely worth a paid repair. Mr. Coffee's line can tell you whether a service center near you handles it.

Prevention

  • Wash the frothing jar after every use, and keep the whisk with it so it never gets lost or left out.
  • Brew a few minutes apart. Let the heater cool between coffees, and wait about a minute between frothing cycles.
  • Use the reusable filter alone, never with paper inside it.
  • Measure with the cup and the water ladder, never past 16 oz.
  • Empty the drip tray every few brews.
  • Wash by hand the tumbler, its lid and straw, and the drip tray cover. The filter, brew basket, frothing jar, jar lid and whisk can go on the dishwasher's top rack.

FAQ

How do I descale a Mr. Coffee 4-in-1?

Mr. Coffee's manual for the 4-in-1 Latte and Latte Lux doesn't include a descaling or decalcifying method. Other Mr. Coffee machines use different vinegar amounts (compare them in our Mr. Coffee descaling guide), so don't borrow one. Ask Mr. Coffee at 1-800-672-6333 before putting vinegar or descaler through this machine.

Why is my cold foam not working?

Cold foam needs the same setup as hot froth: the whisk clicked into the bottom of the jar, cold milk no higher than the line, and the lid on. Then press COLD FOAM. Almond milk's bubbles fade quickly, so Mr. Coffee suggests an almond- or oat-based creamer instead.

Is it normal for it to steam?

Yes, when you brew back to back. Mr. Coffee says steam is normal then, and that hot steam escapes from the machine during use, so keep the space above it clear. Don't open the lid during or just after a brew, because the contents can scald.

Can I use K-Cups or pods?

No. The 4-in-1 is a pod-free brewer. It uses ground coffee in the reusable filter, or in a 5-cup basket-style paper filter.
