How to descale the DeLonghi Magnifica Evo correctly — step-by-step for ECAM290, ECAM292, ECAM295, and ECAM298, plus how to fix the descale alert that won't reset.

The Magnifica Evo Has a New Descaling System — and a Common Trap

The DeLonghi Magnifica Evo (ECAM290.21, ECAM290.31, ECAM290.51, ECAM292, ECAM295, ECAM298) introduced a revised water detection and descaling system compared to the older Magnifica S and Classic. The procedure looks similar on the surface, but there are a few differences that catch people out — particularly around the water sensor alert and what happens if the cycle is interrupted.

If your Evo is showing the descale icon, brewing weaker than usual, or the descale alert keeps coming back after you've already cleaned it, this guide covers the correct procedure and the most common fixes.

What the Descale Alert Looks Like on the Evo

The Magnifica Evo uses an icon-based display (no text on most variants). The descaling alert appears as a tap/faucet icon or a water drop with a scale symbol, often combined with a solid or blinking orange light.

On the ECAM298 (Magnifica Evo Manual): the display shows a wrench icon alongside the scale icon when descaling is required. Do not confuse this with the routine rinse cycle alert (which shows only the wrench).

When the alert is amber/orange: descaling is recommended soon. When it turns red: descaling is required and the machine will limit functionality.

What You Need

  • DeLonghi EcoDecalk ($12-15 for 100ml — enough for two descaling cycles). This is the recommended descaler for all Magnifica Evo models.
  • Fresh water — 1 liter minimum in the tank
  • Two containers of at least 500ml each, or one large container of 1.5L
  • 30-40 minutes — the machine handles the timing, but you need to be present

Do NOT use: vinegar, citric acid descalers, or generic descaling solutions not rated for DeLonghi machines with aluminum boiler components. The Magnifica Evo's boiler and internal circuits include aluminum parts that vinegar degrades over time.

Step-by-Step Descaling Procedure

Preparation:

  1. Make sure the machine is fully powered on and at ready temperature
  2. Empty and rinse the water tank
  3. Remove any water filter from the tank (do not descale with a filter installed)
  4. Add the full 100ml of EcoDecalk to the tank, then fill with fresh water to the 1-liter mark
  5. Empty the drip tray and reinsert it
  6. Empty the coffee grounds drawer and reinsert it
  7. Place a large container (1.5L minimum) under the coffee spout and steam wand

Starting the cycle:

For ECAM290.21 / ECAM290.31 / ECAM290.51:

  • Press and hold the hot water/steam button for 5-7 seconds until the scale icon starts blinking
  • Press OK or the brew confirmation button to start

For ECAM292 / ECAM295:

  • Navigate using the dial: Settings → Maintenance → Descaling → Start

For ECAM298 (Manual with physical buttons):

  • Hold the long-steam button for 5 seconds — the descale light will flash
  • Press the coffee button to confirm and start

Running the cycle:

  1. The machine will begin pumping descaling solution through in controlled bursts — you'll see liquid flowing into your container from the coffee spout and the steam wand
  2. The cycle runs automatically for approximately 20 minutes, pausing between phases
  3. Do not interrupt the cycle — if you remove the water tank or power off mid-cycle, the machine's descaling counter won't reset and you'll need to start over
  4. When the tank empties, the machine will pause and display a "refill tank" prompt
  5. Remove the tank, rinse it thoroughly, and refill with 1 liter of fresh clean water (no descaler)
  6. Replace the tank and press OK/confirm to start the rinse phase

Rinse phase:

  1. The machine runs two rinse sequences automatically — each pushes clean water through the full circuit
  2. Empty your container between rinses if needed
  3. When complete, the scale icon will disappear from the display and the machine returns to ready status
  4. Run one additional manual hot water cycle (press the hot water button and dispense ~100ml) before making coffee — this ensures any last traces of descaler are flushed

Total time: 35-45 minutes

The Descale Alert Won't Reset — How to Fix It

This is the most common post-descaling issue on the Magnifica Evo. The scale icon remains after a completed cycle.

Cause 1: Cycle interrupted before completion. If power was lost, the water tank was removed early, or you pressed cancel at any point, the machine's internal counter didn't register the complete cycle. Run the full procedure again from the beginning.

Cause 2: Water filter was left in the tank. Descaling with a filter in the tank prevents full solution concentration from reaching the boiler — the machine may complete the cycle without achieving full descaling, leaving the sensor triggered. Remove the filter, repeat the descale.

Cause 3: EcoDecalk ratio was wrong. Using less than the recommended 100ml (some users try to stretch two cycles from one bottle) reduces effectiveness. Use the full amount.

Cause 4: Evo water sensor fault. Rare but documented on early ECAM290 units — the water hardness sensor can report incorrectly. If you've run two complete cycles with full EcoDecalk dosing and the alert persists: contact DeLonghi support. This is covered under warranty as a sensor defect.

How Often to Descale the Magnifica Evo

The Evo's water hardness sensor monitors calcium in real-time and calculates descaling intervals automatically. Set the water hardness correctly in the settings — it's worth doing rather than leaving it at default:

  1. Go to Settings → Water Hardness
  2. Use the DeLonghi test strip (included in the box, or purchase separately)
  3. Set to the matching level (1-5 on most Evo models)

General frequency:

  • Soft water (level 1-2): Every 3-5 months
  • Medium water (level 3): Every 2-3 months
  • Hard water (level 4-5): Every 4-6 weeks

If you use a water filter (DeLonghi DLSC002 or similar), set the hardness level to Soft regardless of your actual tap water — the filter removes the minerals before they reach the machine.

Descaling vs. Rinsing — Not the Same Thing

The Magnifica Evo performs automatic rinse cycles at startup and shutdown — these are not descaling. Some users confuse the two and believe the machine is cleaning itself more than it is.

  • Rinse cycle (wrench icon alone): 30 seconds, clears the brewing group with hot water. Runs on startup and shutdown. Does not remove scale.
  • Descaling cycle (scale icon): 35-45 minutes, uses descaling solution to dissolve calcium deposits. Required every 4-12 weeks depending on water hardness.

Do not skip descaling because the machine performs rinse cycles. They do completely different jobs.

Prevention

  • Use a water filter. The DeLonghi DLSC002 activated carbon filter removes calcium before it reaches the boiler. With a filter, most users can extend descaling intervals to 4-6 months.
  • Set water hardness accurately. The machine's alert timing is only as accurate as the hardness setting.
  • Don't descale with the filter in. Always remove the filter before starting a descale cycle, then reinstall after.
  • Don't use flavored or sparkling water in the tank. These cause scale-like deposits much faster than plain tap water.
  • Run the machine to empty before descaling — don't start a descale cycle with leftover coffee solution in the system.

FAQ

How do I start the descaling cycle on the ECAM290?

Press and hold the hot water/steam button for 5-7 seconds until the scale icon blinks, then press the coffee/OK button to confirm. The exact button varies slightly between ECAM290 sub-models — if this doesn't work, try holding the lungo button instead.

Can I use a third-party descaler instead of EcoDecalk?

Yes, if it's specifically rated for DeLonghi machines and contains no vinegar or acetic acid. Durgol Universal and Urnex Full Circle are both compatible. Avoid citric acid concentrations above 10% — higher concentrations can damage O-rings in the Evo's water circuit.

The machine shows the descale icon but I just descaled 2 weeks ago. Is it broken?

Check the water hardness setting first. If it's set too low relative to your actual tap water, the machine recalculates quickly and re-triggers the alert. Also check whether a water filter is installed — if it is, the hardness setting should be at level 1 (Soft). If settings look correct and the alert keeps returning within days, the water hardness sensor may be malfunctioning — contact DeLonghi support.

Do I need to remove the milk system before descaling the ECAM290.51 or ECAM295?

Yes — if your Evo has a separate milk carafe or LatteCrema attachment, detach it before descaling. The descale cycle runs through the water and coffee circuits only. The milk system has its own separate cleaning cycle.

My Magnifica Evo is leaking during the descaling cycle. Is that normal?

Small amounts of condensation around the steam wand are normal during descaling. Active dripping from the bottom of the machine or from the group head seals is not normal — stop the cycle, unplug the machine, and inspect the drip tray and group head seal. A leaking group head seal during descaling usually means the seal has degraded and needs replacement.
