Breville showing ER07? It's a flow sensor error — scale causes it 58% of the time. 5 fixes for BES870, BES500, BES878, BES876, and BES990. Most resolved in under 40 minutes.

What ER07 Actually Means

ER07 is Breville's flow sensor error — it fires when the machine detects pressure or flow outside the expected range during extraction. Most of the time that means restriction from scale. Sometimes it's a cleaning tablet residue, a clogged shower screen, or a pump that needs priming.

It shows on the Barista Express (BES870), Bambino Plus (BES500), Barista Pro (BES878), Barista Express Impress (BES876), and Oracle Touch (BES990). The fix is usually the same regardless of model, but a few steps are machine-specific — I'll call those out.

Quick Check First

Before running through the full list, do these in 2 minutes:

  • Empty the drip tray completely (an overfull tray can trigger sensor errors)
  • Remove and reseat the water tank — a loose tank causes sporadic pressure faults
  • Run a blank shot (no portafilter) — does water flow normally? If yes, the restriction is in the portafilter or puck, not the machine

If the blank shot runs fine but ER07 appears with a portafilter inserted, start with Fix 3 (shower screen). If ER07 appears on a blank shot too, start with Fix 1 (descaling).

Fix 1: Descale the Machine (Works 58% of Time)

Scale inside the ThermoJet or heating boiler creates backpressure the flow sensor reads as an error state. This is the most common cause across all models — especially if you're using tap water and it's been more than 3 months since your last descale.

BES870 / BES878 / BES876 procedure:

  1. Fill the water tank with Breville descaler solution mixed per packet instructions (about 1 liter)
  2. Place a large jug under the group head and steam wand
  3. Enter descale mode: press and hold the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons together for 5 seconds — the Descale/Clean light will blink
  4. Press the power button to start the cycle (it takes 25-35 minutes, runs in automated passes)
  5. When complete, the light pattern changes — fill with fresh water and run 2 rinse cycles
  6. Exit descale mode by pressing and holding the same buttons again

BES500 (Bambino Plus) procedure: The BES500 uses the same button combination but has a shorter cycle (~20 minutes). Make sure the auto-steam wand is in the cleaning position during the descale run.

BES990 (Oracle Touch): The Oracle Touch has a guided descale mode accessible through the settings menu — no button combinations needed.

Time: 40-50 minutes
Cost: $10-15
Success Rate: 58%
Difficulty: Easy

Pro tip: Use Breville's own descaler (Pura Descaler). Third-party descalers work, but some leave residue that triggers additional error codes.

Fix 2: Clean the Shower Screen (Works 22% of Time)

The shower screen distributes water over the coffee puck. Fine coffee oils and particles accumulate on the screen's mesh holes over months of use, gradually restricting flow until ER07 appears.

  1. Remove the portafilter and look up at the group head — you'll see a round metal screen with small holes
  2. Unscrew the central screw (BES870/878: requires a flathead screwdriver; BES500: the screw is more recessed)
  3. Remove the shower screen and the rubber gasket beneath it
  4. Soak both in hot water for 10 minutes, then scrub the screen with a soft brush
  5. Rinse thoroughly — hold the screen up to light to confirm all holes are clear
  6. Reinstall: gasket first, then screen, then screw (finger-tight only — don't overtighten)
  7. Run a blank shot to flush the group head before making coffee

Time: 20 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: 22%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 3: Backflush with a Cleaning Tablet (Works 12% of Time)

If ER07 appeared after months without backflushing, coffee oil buildup inside the brew group is the likely culprit. Backflushing forces cleaning solution backward through the group head to dissolve the deposits.

Note: Only BES870, BES878, BES876, and BES990 support backflushing. The BES500 (Bambino Plus) has a solenoid valve but uses a different cleaning cycle — use the cleaning tablets in the blind filter basket with the automated clean cycle instead.

  1. Insert the blind filter basket (the solid one with no holes) into the portafilter
  2. Place one Breville cleaning tablet in the basket
  3. Lock the portafilter into the group head
  4. On the BES870/878: press the 1-cup button to start a backflush cycle — the machine will pump in 10-second intervals
  5. Repeat 5 times with the tablet, then 5 more times with fresh water only to rinse
  6. Remove the portafilter and run a blank shot

Time: 15 minutes
Cost: $3-5
Success Rate: 12%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 4: Prime the Pump After Tank Refill (Works 6% of Time)

If ER07 appeared right after refilling or removing the water tank, an air lock in the pump is the likely cause — common after the tank runs completely dry.

  1. Fill the tank with fresh cold water
  2. Insert the portafilter with no coffee in it
  3. Trigger a shot cycle — the machine may sputter and produce nothing for 10-20 seconds before water flows
  4. Run 2-3 blank cycles until flow normalizes
  5. The ER07 should clear once the pump is primed

Time: 5 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: 6%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 5: Factory Reset (Works 4% of Time)

Occasionally a sensor glitch — not a physical blockage — triggers ER07 after a power surge or interrupted cycle. A factory reset clears all stored error states.

BES870 / BES878: With the machine on, hold the filter size and program buttons simultaneously for 5 seconds until all lights flash. Release and let the machine restart.

BES500: Hold the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons with the machine powered off, then turn on while holding — release when the lights blink.

BES990 (Oracle Touch): Settings → Maintenance → Factory Reset.

Important: A factory reset clears your saved personalization settings (shot volume, temperature, milk texture). Make note of your preferences before resetting.

When DIY Won't Fix It

If ER07 persists after descaling, shower screen cleaning, and backflushing, the issue is likely mechanical:

  • Pump failure — the 9-bar pump that forces water through the puck has worn out. This is a common failure point after 3-5 years of heavy use. A replacement pump costs $30-50 and requires partial disassembly — intermediate DIY territory.
  • Solenoid valve stuck closed — the three-way solenoid valve (on BES870/878/876) controls pressure release after extraction. If it's stuck or clogged, pressure can't normalize and ER07 fires consistently. Solenoid cleaning or replacement is a more advanced repair.
  • Flow meter failure — the sensor itself may have failed. Rare, but if the machine is older and all other fixes haven't worked, this is worth checking if you're comfortable with disassembly.

For machines under warranty: Breville covers ER07 under manufacturing defect claims if the error appeared without user error. Contact Breville support with the machine's serial number.

Prevent ER07 From Coming Back

  • Descale every 90 days if you use tap water; every 6 months with filtered water
  • Backflush with a cleaning tablet every 2 weeks if you brew daily
  • Remove and rinse the shower screen monthly — takes 10 minutes and prevents gradual buildup
  • Never let the water tank run completely dry — air locks cause pump stress
  • Use Breville's recommended water hardness range (soft to medium) — hard water accelerates ThermoJet scale

FAQ

Does ER07 mean I need to replace my Breville?

Rarely. ER07 is almost always a maintenance issue — scale or coffee oil buildup — not a sign of machine failure. The vast majority of ER07 errors clear after descaling or cleaning.

My Barista Express shows ER07 right after I bought it. What's wrong?

New machines can show ER07 if air was trapped in the pump during shipping or if the water tank wasn't fully seated on first use. Run 3-4 blank shots (water only) to prime the pump. If ER07 continues on a brand-new machine, contact Breville — it should be covered under warranty.

Can I use white vinegar instead of Breville descaler?

Yes, but with caution. A 50/50 white vinegar and water solution works for descaling, but you need to run at least 3 full rinse cycles afterward — vinegar residue in the ThermoJet can cause its own error codes and affects espresso taste. Breville's Pura Descaler rinses out more cleanly.

ER07 comes back within a week of descaling. Is something wrong?

If ER07 returns quickly, you have an unusually fast scale accumulation rate — either very hard water or the machine is being used much more than average. Switching to filtered or softened water will significantly extend the interval between descaling sessions.

Can ER07 damage the machine if ignored?

Long-term, yes. Running a machine with restricted flow puts sustained stress on the pump. The pump is working harder than designed to force water through the blockage. Descale at the first ER07 appearance rather than waiting.
