DeLonghi Dinamica grinding but not brewing, or refusing to start? Fix brewing unit jams, bean hopper issues, scale buildup, and sensor errors on ECAM350, ECAM360, and Dinamica Plus ECAM370.

The Dinamica Is Different From Other DeLonghi Machines

The Dinamica (ECAM350, ECAM360) and Dinamica Plus (ECAM370) are bean-to-cup automatics — they grind, tamp, brew, and dispense in one cycle. That means "won't brew" can mean a grinding problem, a brewing unit jam, a flow issue, or any combination of the three. It's more complicated to diagnose than a drip machine.

The good news: 80% of Dinamica brewing failures are fixable without tools, and the most common cause — a dirty or jammed brewing unit — takes 20 minutes to resolve. The Dinamica's removable brewing unit is designed to be cleaned at home, which is a real advantage over machines that require professional servicing for the same issue.

Work through these fixes in order. The first two fixes resolve most problems.

Quick Checks Before You Start

  • Is the bean hopper empty? The Dinamica defaults to grinding fresh beans. An empty hopper = no coffee. Check it before anything else.
  • Water tank seated and filled? The tank needs to be above the minimum line and clicked firmly into the machine.
  • Is the dreg drawer full? The Dinamica tracks coffee cycles and will display a "GROUNDS" or empty dreg drawer alert that prevents brewing. Empty it.
  • Drip tray overflow? The machine monitors drip tray level. Remove, empty, and reinsert the tray.
  • Is there a rinse cycle pending? After turning on or after extended storage, the Dinamica runs an automatic rinse. If you interrupted this cycle, the machine may be waiting for it to complete before it will brew.
  • Coffee spout blocked? Grounds and coffee oils can partially clog the spout. Check that it's clear.

Fix 1: Complete the Rinse Cycle, Then Power Cycle

The Dinamica runs startup and shutdown rinse cycles that flush the internal circuit. If the machine was powered off mid-cycle — which happens more often than you'd think, especially if there was a power flicker — it gets stuck waiting to complete the sequence.

How to fix it:

  1. Turn on the machine and wait 3 full minutes without pressing any buttons
  2. If a rinse cycle starts automatically, let it complete fully
  3. After the rinse completes and the machine shows ready status, attempt a brew
  4. If it still won't brew: turn the machine off, wait 1 minute, then turn back on
  5. Let the startup sequence complete (30-60 seconds)
  6. Attempt a brew immediately after the ready indicator appears

If you see an "INFUSER" or "MAINTENANCE" alert on the display, the brewing unit needs attention — move to Fix 3.

ECAM370 (Dinamica Plus) note: this model has a more involved startup sequence because of the LatteCrema milk system. If the machine is connected to the milk carafe, let the milk system purge cycle finish before attempting a coffee brew.

Fix 2: Refill and Check the Bean Hopper

This sounds obvious, but it causes more service calls than you'd expect. The Dinamica's bean level sensor triggers an alert, but only when the hopper is completely empty — the machine will try to grind and fail before displaying the alert. A hopper that's 90% empty but has a few beans stuck in the corner often passes the sensor check.

How to fix it:

  1. Open the bean hopper lid and check the level — not just whether there are beans present, but whether they can actually flow to the grinder
  2. If there are a few beans stuck around the edges, shake the hopper gently to dislodge them
  3. Top up the hopper with fresh beans to at least the 1/3 full mark
  4. Also check the aroma slider at the bottom of the hopper (ECAM350/ECAM370 have this). If it's set to fully closed, beans can't flow. Set it to medium or fully open.
  5. Attempt a brew

Bean hopper cleaning note: Oils from old beans can coat the hopper walls and create a layer that sticks fresh beans. If you notice the machine grinding inconsistently or under-extracting even with fresh beans, empty the hopper completely and wipe the interior walls with a dry cloth. Don't use water — moisture in the grinder causes clumping.

What if you want to use pre-ground coffee? The Dinamica has a pre-ground bypass — there's a small spout at the back of the bean hopper specifically for ground coffee. Add 1-2 teaspoons and use the "pre-ground" setting.

Fix 3: Remove, Clean, and Reinstall the Brewing Unit

This is the most effective fix for a Dinamica that powers on, grinds coffee, but either doesn't dispense or produces only a trickle. The brewing unit (also called the infuser) is the removable component that compresses the grounds, forces water through, and ejects the puck. Coffee oils and compacted grounds build up inside it and prevent proper flow.

DeLonghi designs the Dinamica for user-accessible brewing unit cleaning — you don't need any tools.

How to do it:

  1. Unplug the machine (important — the brewing unit should only be removed when powered off)
  2. Open the side door (left side of the ECAM350, right side of the ECAM370)
  3. Press the release button and slide out the brewing unit — it pulls forward and out. If it's stuck, push in slightly before pulling out.
  4. Hold the brewing unit under warm running water and rinse thoroughly. Work the press mechanism by hand — push the coffee piston down and release it 10-15 times under the water.
  5. Look through the central tube where water passes through — it should be clear. If you see buildup, use a soft brush (toothbrush works) to clear it.
  6. Leave it to air dry for at least 15 minutes — do not put back in wet
  7. Once dry, slide back into the machine until it clicks firmly
  8. Run one full water-only cycle before brewing coffee

IMPORTANT: Lubricate the brewing unit seals every 30 days. DeLonghi sells a specific grease (available for $8-10), and it matters — dry seals cause the unit to stick and eventually crack. Put a small amount on the four rubber o-rings visible on the brewing unit.

Time: 25-30 minutes (including dry time)
Cost: Free (or $8-10 for lubricant)
Success Rate: 52%
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

Fix 4: Run a Full Descale Cycle

Scaling inside the boiler and internal tubing restricts water flow. On the Dinamica, scale buildup shows up as: longer brew times, weaker coffee, or the machine starting a brew cycle and stopping mid-cycle. The display may show a water drop icon or a specific descale alert.

What you need: DeLonghi EcoDecalk descaler ($12-15) or a compatible liquid descaler. Do not use vinegar — it's too aggressive for the Dinamica's internal components and can degrade the seals.

How to descale:

  1. Empty the water tank and refill with 1 liter of water + the full contents of one EcoDecalk sachet
  2. Place a container of at least 1.5 liters under the steam wand and coffee spout
  3. Select the descale function: Menu → Maintenance → Descaling
  4. Follow on-screen prompts — the cycle runs in two phases with pauses in between. Total time: about 30 minutes.
  5. When prompted, empty the container and refill the tank with fresh water
  6. Complete the rinse phase (machine will run water through twice)
  7. After the cycle, run one manual water-only dispense before brewing coffee

ECAM360/ECAM370 note: these models track descaling history in memory. If you run a manual descale cycle but don't go through the machine's official descale menu, the machine won't reset the descale counter and will continue showing the alert.

Fix 5: Reset the Brewing Unit After a Jam

Sometimes the brewing unit gets jammed in a partially engaged position — especially after a brew was interrupted or the machine was moved while brewing. When this happens, the unit can't complete its cycle, and the machine will refuse to start a new brew.

How to fix it:

  1. Open the side door and check the brewing unit position — it should be fully retracted (in the resting position, piston up)
  2. If it looks partially engaged or stuck mid-cycle: press down firmly on the piston with your thumb, then release — this manually cycles it to the end of its stroke
  3. Remove the brewing unit fully (see Fix 3 steps 1-3)
  4. Reinstall it by inserting straight in and pushing firmly until you hear/feel the click
  5. Close the side door
  6. Power cycle the machine (unplug, wait 60 seconds, replug)
  7. Let the machine complete its startup sequence, then attempt a brew

Time: 10-15 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: 28%
Difficulty: Easy-Moderate

Fix 6: Check the Water Sensor for False Alerts

The Dinamica has a float sensor in the water tank that triggers a "Fill Water" alert when the water level drops below minimum. This sensor can sometimes get stuck in the triggered position even when the tank is full — mineral scale can cause the float to stop moving freely.

If the machine shows "Fill Water" but the tank is clearly full:

  1. Remove the water tank and check the float inside it — it's a small plastic piece that moves up and down as the water level changes
  2. Rinse the tank thoroughly with fresh water, agitating it to free the float
  3. If the float feels stuck, soak the tank in warm water for 15 minutes
  4. Shake it side to side to confirm the float is moving freely before reinstalling
  5. Reseat the tank firmly and check the display — the alert should clear

When to Call for Service

If you've worked through all fixes and the Dinamica still won't brew, the likely issues are:

Grinder failure: The grinder burrs are worn or jammed with a foreign object (stone, non-coffee material). A clunking or grinding-but-no-grounds symptom is the giveaway. Burr replacement is doable at home ($30-50 for parts) but requires partial disassembly.

Pump failure: No water flow despite the pump running (you can hear the motor). Replacement is a moderate-difficulty repair.

Control board fault: Erratic behavior, multiple alerts at once, or display errors that don't match any described issue.

DeLonghi's repair service runs $80-150 for most Dinamica issues. Parts under warranty (2 years on ECAM models) are covered; labor typically isn't after the first year.

Prevention: Keep the Dinamica Brewing Reliably

  • Rinse the brewing unit every 100 brews (or once a month with daily use) — don't wait until it jams
  • Lubricate the brewing unit seals every 30 days — DeLonghi food-grade grease, not petroleum-based products
  • Descale every 3 months — hard water users should go every 6-8 weeks
  • Empty the dreg drawer and drip tray daily — full accessories cause the machine to refuse brewing
  • Use fresh beans — stale or oily "dark roast" beans clog the grinder faster
  • Don't put flavored beans in the hopper — the oils from flavored beans coat the grinder and clog the brewing unit far faster than regular coffee

FAQ

How do I reset my DeLonghi Dinamica?

For a soft reset: hold the power button for 5 seconds until the machine turns off, wait 30 seconds, then power back on. For a full factory reset (clears all settings including descaling history and brewing parameters): hold the Lungo + Americano buttons simultaneously while powering on. Note that this doesn't fix hardware issues — it only clears software states.

Why is the Dinamica grinding but not producing any coffee?

The most common cause is a jammed or dirty brewing unit — grounds have built up to the point where the piston can't compress properly and water can't flow through. Fix 3 (remove and clean the brewing unit) resolves this in most cases. If the grinder runs but no grounds fall into the brewing unit at all, check the bean hopper for a blockage at the outlet chute.

How often should I clean the brewing unit?

DeLonghi recommends every 200-300 cycles. In practice, with daily use (2-3 cups/day), that's every 2-3 months. If you use oily or dark roast beans, clean monthly. The machine will prompt you with a maintenance alert as well, but don't wait for it — the alert comes later than it should.

What's the difference between the Dinamica and Dinamica Plus?

The ECAM350 (Dinamica) makes espresso and coffee only. The ECAM370 (Dinamica Plus) adds the LatteCrema milk container system, which allows one-touch lattes, cappuccinos, and flat whites without a separate steam wand. Both have the same brewing unit, grinder, and core brewing system — troubleshooting for brewing problems is identical on both models.

Why does my ECAM350 say "Fill Water" even when the tank is full?

The water level float sensor is stuck. It happens from mineral deposit buildup on the float mechanism. Remove the tank, rinse and agitate it vigorously to free the float, then reseat. If it persists, descale the tank separately with a diluted EcoDecalk solution.
