Problem 1: Jura Won't Turn On

Affects: E6, E8, E60, S8, Z6, Z10, GIGA 6, D6

Step 1: Check Power and Tank

  1. Verify the power switch is fully pressed — Jura switches can feel engaged before fully clicking
  2. Test the outlet with another device
  3. Remove the water tank and reseat it firmly — Jura machines won't power on if the tank is not fully engaged
  4. Check the tank for damage or scale around the valve base

Step 2: Thermal Cutoff Cooling Period

If the machine was used heavily or ran dry:

  1. Unplug the machine completely
  2. Wait 30-45 minutes for thermal cutoffs to reset
  3. Ensure the water tank is full before repowering
  4. Press and hold the power switch for 3 seconds on restart

Step 3: Full Reset Procedure

For Jura machines with a display (E8, S8, Z10, GIGA 6):

  1. Unplug the machine
  2. Wait 60 seconds
  3. Hold the rotary switch pressed inward while plugging back in
  4. Release when the display activates

For machines with button controls only (E6, D6):

  1. Unplug, wait 60 seconds, plug back in
  2. Press the power switch normally — the machine resets its controller on cold boot

Success rate: 80% of Jura power issues resolve within these three steps.

Problem 2: Error Codes and Display Messages

Jura communicates clearly through its display — these messages have specific meanings and correct responses.

Common Jura Display Alerts

FILL WATER TANK / Water drop icon: The water tank is empty or not seated. Refill and reseat.

EMPTY DRIP TRAY / Fill tray icon: The drip tray is full. Remove, empty, clean, and reinsert before resuming.

EMPTY GROUNDS CONTAINER: The used grounds container is full. Remove, empty, clean, dry, and reinsert. The machine will not brew until this is cleared.

CLEAN MILK SYSTEM: The milk pipe and system require rinsing. Run the machine's milk system clean program (varies by model — usually accessed via the maintenance menu). Do not skip or delay — milk residue inside tubes leads to bacterial growth and blocked lines within 24 hours.

DESCALE / Descaling symbol: Descaling is overdue. Jura machines lock out brewing eventually if this alert is ignored. Run a full descale cycle using Jura's own descaling tablets — no substitutes.

COFFEE GROUNDS MALFUNCTION / Bean icon with X: The grinder has detected a jam or unusual resistance. See Problem 3.

FILTER CHANGE (CLARIS): The CLARIS Smart water filter has reached end-of-life. Replace with a genuine Jura CLARIS Smart filter before the next brew cycle.

Service Errors (Require Jura Support)

E1 through E8 error codes on older Jura models (pre-2018) indicate hardware faults:

  • E1: Grinder motor fault
  • E3: Brew unit motor fault
  • E5: Heating element sensor fault
  • E8: Water circuit pressure fault

These codes require service or replacement of the relevant component. Contact Jura customer support with your machine's model number and serial number.

Problem 3: Machine Grinds but Produces No Coffee

Affects: All bean-to-cup models — E6, E8, S8, Z6, Z10, GIGA 6

Step 1: Remove and Rinse the Brew Unit

This resolves the issue in approximately 55% of cases.

  1. Open the service door (right side on most Jura models)
  2. Press the release button and slide the brew unit out
  3. Rinse the brew unit thoroughly under warm running water — do not use soap
  4. Check for stuck coffee grounds in the piston mechanism — use a toothbrush to clear them
  5. Let the brew unit drain for 5 minutes
  6. Reinsert firmly — the brew unit should slide in smoothly and click into position
  7. Close the service door and run a rinse cycle

Important: Only remove the brew unit when the machine is switched on and has completed a rinse cycle. Removing it cold can cause the mechanism to jam during reinsertion.

Step 2: Check the Grinder

If the grinding sounds abnormal (grinding for longer than usual, or very loud):

  1. Empty the bean hopper
  2. Look inside the hopper for foreign objects — small stones or debris can jam the grinder
  3. Use the cleaning brush to sweep loose grounds from the grinder chute
  4. Refill with fresh beans and run a rinse cycle

For the GIGA 6 and Z10, both grinders should be checked independently.

Step 3: Check Coffee Powder Bypass (Pre-Ground Slot)

If using the pre-ground bypass:

  1. Add only one measure (approximately 11g) at a time
  2. Do not add while a brew cycle is already in progress
  3. Very finely ground coffee can block the bypass doser — switch to coarser ground coffee

Problem 4: Weak Coffee or Low Output Volume

Step 1: Adjust Grinder Fineness

The Jura grinder setting is the most powerful lever for improving shot strength:

  1. Access grinder settings via the rotary dial or menu (model-dependent)
  2. Move one step finer and run a test brew
  3. Wait at least 2-3 brews before evaluating — the grinder clears old grounds first
  4. Note: On E-line machines (E6, E8), the grinder setting is accessible only via the menu, not a physical dial

Step 2: Increase Coffee Strength or Volume Settings

  • Strength setting: Accessible via the main menu — increase from Normal to Strong or Very Strong
  • Volume setting: If output volume has decreased over time (not always perceived as weakness), recalibrate the brew volume through the product settings menu

Step 3: Descale

Scale buildup in the thermoblock reduces both water temperature and pressure:

  1. Run a full descale cycle using Jura CLARIS or Jura descaling tablets
  2. After descaling, brew and discard 3 cups before drinking
  3. Evaluate coffee strength — scale-related weakness often resolves immediately after descaling

Problem 5: Milk System Not Frothing or Blocked

Affects: E8, S8, Z6, Z10, GIGA 6 (all models with milk connectivity)

Step 1: Run the Milk System Clean Program

This is the first step for any milk system issue:

  1. Remove the milk container and any milk residue
  2. Fill a small container with clean water
  3. Insert the milk pipe into the water container
  4. Run the CLEAN MILK SYSTEM program from the maintenance menu
  5. The machine will cycle water through the milk circuit
  6. Repeat if froth quality is still poor after the first clean

Step 2: Clean the Milk Pipe and Connectors Manually

For persistent blockages:

  1. Disconnect the milk pipe from the machine
  2. Run warm water through the pipe by pinching one end and blowing — if resistance is felt, the pipe is partially blocked
  3. Soak the pipe in a Urnex Milk System Cleaner solution for 15 minutes
  4. Flush with clean water and reconnect
  5. Run the milk clean program again

Step 3: Fine Milk Froth Nozzle Cleaning

The fine nozzle at the end of the milk pipe (or inside the machine's milk spout) has very small holes that block quickly:

  1. Remove the nozzle (it typically pulls or unscrews)
  2. Soak in hot water for 10 minutes
  3. Use a pin to clear each hole individually
  4. Rinse and reinstall

Milk pipe temperature: Never use milk above refrigerator temperature in the milk system — warm milk accelerates bacterial growth inside the tube.

Problem 6: Descale Alert Won't Clear After Descaling

This is the second-most common Jura service call after brew unit jams.

Why It Happens

  • Cycle interrupted before completion
  • Water tank ran dry mid-cycle
  • Wrong descaler used (non-Jura tablets or wrong dilution)
  • CLARIS filter still in place during descaling (should be removed on most models)

Correct Procedure to Clear the Alert

  1. Remove the CLARIS filter from the water tank before starting (unless your model says otherwise)
  2. Dissolve 2 Jura descaling tablets in 600ml of lukewarm water — fill the tank with this solution
  3. Start the descale program from the maintenance menu — do not interrupt for any reason
  4. The machine will run multiple water passes automatically (20-30 minutes total)
  5. When prompted, refill the tank with fresh water for the rinse passes
  6. After all passes complete, the alert should clear automatically

If the alert still shows: The machine's internal counter may need a manual reset. On E and S line machines: hold the rotary switch for 5 seconds from the maintenance screen. On Z line: contact Jura support — the Z series reset requires a service tool on some firmware versions.

Model-Specific Notes

Jura E6 (2022 onwards)

  • Entry-level E-line with a single grinder and thermoblock
  • Brew unit is identical to E8 — same removal and cleaning procedure
  • No automatic milk system — manual frother attachment only
  • Descale every 180 litres or 3 months (whichever comes first)

Jura E8 (Chrome, Piano Black, Dark Inox)

  • The E8 is the best-selling Jura — most issues have well-documented fixes
  • The milk system uses a fine frother connector — clean after every use
  • CLARIS Smart filter compatible — replace every 50 litres for best results
  • The 2023 E8 has an updated brew unit with a wider piston — older brew unit instructions still apply

Jura S8 (Chrome, Moonlight Silver)

  • The S8 has a second grinder height setting unavailable on E-line machines
  • Dual specialty function: the S8 can prepare two drinks simultaneously
  • The milk foam chiller is a significant differentiator — clean it thoroughly after every milk drink
  • More complex milk circuit than E8 — milk system cleaning is more important on the S8

Jura Z10 (Aluminium White, Aluminium Black)

  • The Z10's cold brew function uses a different water circuit — do not descale the cold water circuit with hot descaler
  • The Hot & Cold Froth system requires daily cleaning of both circuits
  • Descaling is a two-stage process on the Z10 — the hot and cold circuits are treated separately

Jura GIGA 6

  • Dual grinder, dual thermoblock — most maintenance tasks apply twice
  • Both grinders should be calibrated and cleaned independently
  • The GIGA 6 has a self-cleaning milk system — still run a manual clean weekly for best hygiene

FAQ

Can I use third-party descaling tablets in my Jura?

Jura strongly recommends their own descaling tablets. The internal descale alert counter is calibrated to the concentration of Jura tablets — third-party tablets may not provide enough acid to clear the sensor, causing the alert to stay on even after a full cycle. Stick with Jura or Jura-certified descalers.

My Jura keeps asking me to empty the grounds container but it's already empty — why?

The grounds counter is brew-cycle-based, not sensor-based. The machine counts the number of brews and prompts at a preset threshold. If you emptied the container and the machine still shows the alert, remove the container, clean it thoroughly, and reinsert while the machine is on — the machine recognizes the removal and reset event.

How often should I clean the Jura brew unit?

Remove and rinse the brew unit monthly minimum. Jura recommends every 200 cups. In practice, monthly rinsing is the most reliable schedule for home users — it takes 2 minutes and prevents 80% of brewing failures.

Is it safe to leave the Jura on all day?

Yes — Jura machines are designed for all-day standby. The energy-saving mode activates after 30 minutes of inactivity (adjustable in the menu). Leaving the machine on keeps the thermoblock warm and reduces preheat time between drinks.
