Hamilton Beach Timer Not Working? 5 Fixes

What to Check First

When a Hamilton Beach auto brew doesn't start, the program usually wasn't activated, or the clock isn't set. Every Hamilton Beach guide we read ends programming by pressing the program button a second time, and only then does its light come on. The BrewStation guide adds: "Clock time must be set for programming function to work." After a power outage the clock needs resetting, which also stops the program.

These steps come from the Use & Care guides for the FrontFill 12-cup (46310), the BrewStation (47950), the FlexBrew 2-Way and the FlexBrew TRIO.

Fix 1: Set the Clock First (Works About 34% of the Time)

A program runs by the clock, so the clock has to be right.

• 46310: press TIME. Pulse TIME to set the hour, watching AM or PM. Wait 3 seconds for the minutes to flash, then pulse TIME to set them.
• BrewStation: press HOUR, then MINUTE.
• FlexBrew 2-Way and TRIO: pulse SET TIME for the hour (AM or PM), wait 3 seconds, then pulse or hold for the minutes.
• Smart coffee maker (49350): the display shows "- - -" when plugged in. Hold TIME for 3 seconds, then set the hour and minutes. If you don't set it within 5 minutes, the clock display goes blank.

After a power outage, Hamilton Beach says the clock requires resetting. Set it again, then reprogram (Fix 2).

Fix 2: Program It, Then Press the Button Again (Works About 26% of the Time)

Setting the start time isn't enough. Each model needs a second press to activate automatic brew, and a light confirms it.

FrontFill 12-cup (46310):

1. Choose a brew option (Regular, BOLD or 1-4 CUPS).
2. Hold PROG. Pulse TIME to set the brew hour. Wait 3 seconds, then set the minutes.
3. Release PROG. The current time shows again.
4. Press and release PROG again. The white PROG light comes on. It goes off when the programmed brew begins.

BrewStation (47950):

1. Hold PROGRAM until the clock flashes.
2. Keep holding, and press HOUR and MINUTE to set the start time. "START TIME" shows on the display.
3. Choose BREW OPTIONS and KEEP WARM if you want them.
4. Press and release PROGRAM. A green light shows program mode, and "START TIME" disappears.

FlexBrew 2-Way (PROG) and TRIO (DELAY BREW):

1. Hold PROG (or DELAY BREW). The start time shows, with 19:99 flashing as the default.
2. Keep holding, and pulse SET TIME to set the hour. Wait 3 seconds, then set the minutes.
3. Release the button, then press and release it again. The PROG (or DELAY BREW) light comes on.

Fill the reservoir and the basket before you go to bed. The program only starts the brew.

Fix 3: Check AM/PM and the Stored Start Time (Works About 18% of the Time)

• AM or PM: every guide sets the hour "in AM or PM", so a start time 12 hours off is easy to set by mistake. Watch the AM/PM indicator while you pulse the hour.
• FlexBrew: to check the start time, hold PROG (or DELAY BREW). The time you set is shown, and you can change it the same way. Then press the button again to reactivate automatic brew.
• 46310 and BrewStation: repeat Fix 2 with the time you want. The start time shows while you hold the program button.

Fix 4: FlexBrew: Programming Is for the Carafe Side Only (Works About 14% of the Time)

Both FlexBrew guides say programming is "For Carafe Side Only". Their troubleshooting tables are blunt: auto-start "is not designed to work with Single-Serve side".

• You can't schedule a single cup. Program the carafe side instead.
• While the carafe side is programmed, the single-serve side can't be used. Plan single cups for when no carafe program is waiting.
• The carafe must be on the warming plate at start time. A carafe off the plate is the first cause Hamilton Beach lists for the carafe side not brewing. Our FlexBrew won't brew guide covers the rest.

Fix 5: Keep It Plugged In, and Reset After a Power Cut (Works About 8% of the Time)

Programs live on the clock, and the clock needs power.

1. Leave it plugged in overnight when you've set a program.
2. After an outage or surge, unplug it, plug it back in, set the clock and reprogram. That's the only reset in the guides.
3. FlexBrew: unplugging also sets brew strength back to Regular. The guide says it "remembers last brew option selected" only while plugged in.
4. 46310: unplugging also resets the count for the CLEAN reminder.
5. If the clock won't keep time while plugged in, or the program light never comes on, contact Hamilton Beach. The 46310 guide prints 1-800-851-8900 for the U.S., and the warranty is 1 year in the U.S. and 5 years in Canada.

When to Replace vs Repair

The guides describe no owner repair for the controls, and say there are no user-serviceable parts inside. Under warranty, claim it. Outside the warranty, a clock that can't hold time on constant power means replacing the machine. You can still brew manually with the on button in the meantime.
