Barista Express or Barista Pro lasting years longer starts with one thing: a consistent maintenance schedule. This guide gives you the exact daily, weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annual tasks for BES870 and BES878 — tested and timed.
Breville Barista Express & Barista Pro Annual Maintenance Guide (BES870, BES878)
Breville Maintenance Schedule at a Glance
Most Breville owners only think about maintenance when something goes wrong — shots running fast, descale light staying on, steam wand clogging mid-froth. The machine usually gives months of warning before these become real problems. Getting ahead of it takes under 5 minutes a day and around 2 hours per year.
| Task | Frequency | Time |
|---|---|---|
| Steam wand purge + wipe | Daily | 2 min |
| Rinse portafilter and basket | Daily | 2 min |
| Empty drip tray | Daily | 1 min |
| Backflush with water | Weekly | 10 min |
| Cafiza backflush | Monthly | 20 min |
| Basket soak | Monthly | 10 min |
| Descale | Every 2-3 months | 45 min |
| Grinder burr inspection | Annually | 30 min |
| Portafilter gasket replacement | Annually | 20 min |
Daily Habits (5 Minutes Total)
These three habits keep your machine performing well between deeper cleans.
Steam Wand Purge and Wipe
Every time you steam milk:
- Open the steam valve for 2 seconds after frothing — this blows out milk residue
- Immediately wipe the wand with a damp cloth
- Open the valve again briefly to clear any remaining milk
Dried milk inside the wand is the most common cause of steam wand blockages and poor froth quality. A 20-second routine prevents a 2-hour cleaning session.
For BES878 Barista Pro with AutoSteam: Even with the automatic steam function, wipe the tip after every session. The tip cap can still trap milk solids.
Portafilter and Basket Rinse
After each espresso shot:
- Remove the portafilter immediately — don't leave it seated
- Knock out the puck
- Rinse the basket under hot water
- Wipe the inside of the group head with a dry cloth
Leaving a spent puck in a hot portafilter bakes oils into the basket and group head gasket. Over weeks, this causes channeling and bitter shots.
Drip Tray
Empty and rinse the drip tray every day or every other day. A full drip tray triggers the overflow indicator on BES870 and BES878 and can eventually push back against the machine base.
Weekly Tasks (10-15 Minutes)
Water Backflush
A weekly backflush without detergent clears loose coffee oils from the solenoid valve and group head.
How to backflush with water only:
- Insert a blind filter (the solid disc that came with your machine) into the portafilter
- Lock the portafilter into the group head
- Press the single shot button 5-7 times in a row, running 10-second cycles
- Remove the portafilter and rinse under hot water
- Wipe the group head seal with a dry cloth
What it does: Flushes coffee oils from the group head, solenoid valve, and internal tubing before they harden into residue.
Grinder Chute Cleaning
Coffee oils accumulate in the grinder exit chute and the portafilter holder:
- Use the cleaning brush (supplied with your machine) to sweep the chute
- Wipe the portafilter cradle with a dry cloth
- Check the grinding chamber for any beans that didn't fall through
Monthly Tasks (30-40 Minutes)
Cafiza Backflush (Critical)
This is the most important regular maintenance task. Cafiza (or Puro Caff) removes oil buildup that water alone cannot dissolve.
For BES870 Barista Express:
- Place 1/2 teaspoon of Cafiza powder in the blind filter
- Insert the blind filter and lock in portafilter
- Run a 10-second cycle — the pump will build pressure then release
- Repeat 5-7 times
- Remove portafilter and rinse thoroughly
- Run 5 more cycles with clean water (no detergent)
- Remove, rinse, and check for suds — keep rinsing until completely clear
For BES878 Barista Pro: Same process, but the BES878's ThermoJet heats faster. Run the first Cafiza cycle within 30 seconds of reaching temperature.
Frequency: Once monthly minimum. If you pull 4+ shots per day, every two weeks.
Coffee oils that bake into the solenoid valve are the #1 cause of "brewing but nothing comes out" failures that look like major repairs but are actually just overdue cleaning.
Portafilter Basket Soak
Monthly, soak your single and double baskets in Cafiza solution:
- Mix 1 teaspoon Cafiza in 500ml hot water
- Submerge baskets for 20-30 minutes
- Scrub with the supplied brush
- Rinse thoroughly under hot water
Clogged basket holes cause channeling, uneven extraction, and bitter shots. This fix is free and takes 30 minutes.
Quarterly Tasks (45-60 Minutes)
Descaling
Breville recommends descaling every 2-3 months in soft water areas and monthly in hard water areas.
Recommended descaler: Breville's own descaler, or Durgol Swiss Espresso. Avoid generic descalers with strong acids — they can damage rubber seals over time.
For BES870 and BES878 — entering descale mode:
- Empty and remove the water tank
- Place an empty jug under the group head and steam wand
- Dissolve descaler in 1L of water and fill the tank
- Press and hold the 1-cup and 2-cup buttons simultaneously for 3 seconds (BES870), or press the MENU button and navigate to DESCALE (BES878)
- Follow the machine's prompts — the cycle takes 20-25 minutes
- When complete, run two full tanks of clean water through
After descaling: Run a test shot before drinking. The first shot after descaling can taste sharp — discard it.
Grinder Calibration Check
Every 3 months, run a test shot and evaluate:
- Shot time: 25-30 seconds for a double espresso is the target
- Grind setting: If you're grinding finer to hit this time, your burrs may be wearing
- Consistency: Puck should be evenly compacted, not crumbly or wet in the center
Annual Tasks (1-2 Hours)
Grinder Burr Inspection
After 12-18 months of regular use, burr sharpness degrades:
- Shots start running faster at the same grind setting
- You grind finer and finer but can't slow the shot
- Coffee tastes flat despite fresh beans
Replacement burr sets cost $40-55 for BES870 and BES878. See our full Breville Grinder Burr Replacement Guide for step-by-step instructions.
Portafilter Gasket Replacement
The group head gasket (the rubber ring the portafilter locks against) hardens over time:
- Signs it needs replacement: Coffee leaks from around the portafilter during extraction, or the portafilter locks at a different angle than it used to
- Replacement cost: $8-12 for a compatible gasket
- Skill level: Moderate — requires removing the shower screen and gasket with a flat-head screwdriver
Replace annually if you pull 2+ shots per day. Every 18 months for lighter use.
Water Filter Replacement
BES870 and BES878 both support the Breville CLARO Swiss water filter:
- Replacement interval: Every 3 months or 100 gallons, whichever comes first
- Why it matters: The filter reduces calcium carbonate buildup, extending time between descales
- Cost: $15-20 for a 3-pack
Model-Specific Notes
Barista Express BES870
- The BES870 has a fixed thermocoil — backflush timing is less critical than the Barista Pro
- The grinder cradle tends to accumulate oils faster — brush it weekly
- The steam wand is manual — purge time is fully user-controlled
- Water filter slot is inside the tank — replace every 3 months regardless of use
Barista Pro BES878
- The ThermoJet heater changes temperature modes in 3 seconds — requires more precise maintenance timing
- Backflush should be started immediately once the machine reaches temperature
- The steam wand tip has a smaller hole than the BES870 — clean more frequently if you steam milk daily
- LCD menu allows viewing descale alert countdown — check it monthly
Oracle Touch BES990
- Monthly cleaning includes the automatic milk frothing system — run the auto-clean cycle after every use
- The dual boiler means two separate descaling paths — follow the machine's prompted sequence exactly
- The Oracle logs usage internally — the machine will alert you to each maintenance task when it's due
Signs Your Breville Needs Immediate Attention
Act right away if you notice:
- White scale flakes in your coffee or in the water tank — descale immediately
- Bitter shots with correct grind setting — Cafiza backflush is overdue
- Steam wand completely blocked — soak tip in hot Cafiza solution, then use a pin to clear
- Portafilter leaking during extraction — gasket needs replacement
- Grinding noise change — burrs may have debris or are wearing rapidly
FAQ
How often should I backflush my Breville?
Backflush with water weekly, and with Cafiza once per month minimum. If you pull 4+ shots daily, do a Cafiza backflush every two weeks.
Can I use vinegar to descale my Breville?
Breville does not recommend vinegar — it can damage rubber seals and leave an odor that affects coffee taste. Use Breville's own descaler, Durgol Swiss Espresso, or another commercial espresso machine descaler.
My descale light came on but I just descaled — what's wrong?
The descale indicator resets only when the machine completes the full cycle. If you cancelled the cycle early or the tank ran dry mid-cycle, the machine may not have registered completion. Run a complete second descale cycle to clear the light.
Do I need to descale more in a hard water area?
Yes. In very hard water areas (above 200 ppm hardness), descale monthly and use the Breville CLARO water filter. The filter significantly reduces scale buildup and extends descaling intervals.
Can I use Puro Caff instead of Cafiza for backflushing?
Yes — Puro Caff is a direct equivalent. Urnex Espresso Machine Cleaner also works. Avoid bleach-based cleaners or any powder not specifically formulated for espresso machines.
