The K-Express adds a STRONG button and a 250-brew maintenance alert. Keurig's guides also give each one different button combinations for the same jobs.
Keurig K-Slim vs. K-Express: Which Should You Buy?
K-Slim or K-Express: One Button Settles It
The clearest difference between these two compact Keurigs is a STRONG button. The K-Express has one; the K-Slim doesn't. Its panel is power, brew and three cup sizes. Both brew 8, 10 or 12 oz from K-Cup pods, neither has a temperature setting, and both switch off 5 minutes after the last brew. The rest of the difference is in upkeep: the K-Express tracks its own maintenance and asks for it after every 250 brews.
Keurig's Use & Care Guides also describe different button combinations for the same jobs. That matters later: a K-Slim tip from a forum can do nothing, or something else, on a K-Express.
Side by Side
| K-Slim | K-Express | |
|---|---|---|
| Cup sizes | 8, 10, 12 oz | 8, 10, 12 oz |
| STRONG brew | No | Yes (press, or hold 3 s with the brewer off to keep it on) |
| Temperature setting | None | None |
| Panel indicators | ADD WATER, DESCALE | Descale notification |
| Maintenance alert | Descale every 3 months | After every 250 brews, and descale every 3 months |
| Auto Off | 5 minutes after the last brew | 5 minutes after the last brew |
| Brewing finished | All buttons go dark | All size buttons light up |
| Minimum water | 6 oz | The reservoir's minimum line |
| Warranty | Limited one year (K-Slim guide) | Check your box paperwork |
Keurig's guides don't print a reservoir volume for either brewer, so we've left it out. Retail listings disagree with each other on it.
Brewing: STRONG and Smart Start
K-Express STRONG. The K-Express has a STRONG button for a bolder cup. To keep Strong Brew Mode on for every brew, hold STRONG for 3 seconds with the brewer off; it blinks twice to confirm.
K-Slim Smart Start. The K-Slim heats and brews in one step. Lift and lower the handle to power on, insert a pod, pick a size and press brew. There's no separate heat-up and no "ready" light: the brew button stays lit through the whole heat-then-brew cycle.
Telling when it's done. This trips up people moving between the two. The K-Slim is finished when the buttons are no longer lit. The K-Express is finished when the sizes are all lit, which is the opposite.
Maintenance: Where They Really Differ
| Job | K-Slim | K-Express |
|---|---|---|
| Enter Descale Mode | Brewer off, hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 s until DESCALE goes solid | Brewer off, hold 8oz + 12oz for 3 s |
| Run each descale pass | Press the flashing brew button | Press the 12oz button |
| Descale ends | After the fresh-water rinse, when ADD WATER lights and the brewer exits Descale Mode | When the DESCALE notification turns off |
| Time | 15-20 minutes | About 20 minutes |
| Mug | Large ceramic mug | Mug of at least 14 oz |
| Descaler | A full bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution plus a bottle of water | Keurig Descaling Solution, or a Descale Pouch plus 24 oz of water |
| Other routine | Clean both needles as needed | Rinse Pods weekly; water filter every 2 months |
The K-Express light only clears after the whole cycle. Its guide says: "the full descaling procedure must be completed to turn off the Descale light." There's no button that resets it. More: Keurig descale light.
Heavily scaled brewer? Both guides give the same rescue. If little or no water comes out during descaling, then air: turn off, unplug, discard the solution, rinse and refill the reservoir, and repeat the fresh-water rinse. Still stuck? Leave it unplugged for at least 30 minutes, then continue.
Same Fault, Different Buttons
| Problem | K-Slim | K-Express |
|---|---|---|
| Partial cup | Brewer off, hold brew + 12oz for 5 s until water dispenses | Brewer off, hold 12oz alone for 5 s |
| High Altitude (the K-Slim guide says 5,000 ft) | Hold brew + 8oz for 3 s | Brewer off, hold POWER + 10oz for 3 s; the 12oz light confirms |
| Won't brew | Add 2 oz more water (6 oz minimum), press brew, repeat | Add 2 oz more water, and lift and reseat the reservoir |
| Grounds in the cup | Straightened paper clip through both entrance-needle holes and the exit needle, then two water-only brews | Same: both needles, then two cleansing brews without a pod |
| No power | Power button on; its own grounded outlet; it may simply have auto-switched off | Same, on its own outlet |
After a partial-cup purge, discard the water and press power to restart. Both guides say the same about a stubborn partial cup: if two full descales haven't fixed it, contact Keurig Customer Service.
Neither brewer has a factory reset, a hidden service menu or numbered error codes. Combinations you see online beyond the ones above aren't in Keurig's guides.
When DIY Won't Work
- Still a partial cup after two descales: call Keurig at 1-866-901-BREW (2739).
- No power on its own outlet: call Keurig. Plug it into its own grounded outlet first: the guides warn an overloaded circuit can stop it working properly.
- Beyond cleaning and descaling, the K-Slim guide says the brewer "is not user serviceable". Don't open it.
The K-Slim guide gives a limited one-year warranty in the US and Canada.
Which Should You Buy?
- Choose the K-Express if you want a STRONG option, or a brewer that reminds you about maintenance by brew count.
- Choose the K-Slim if you want the simplest panel: power, three sizes and brew, with ADD WATER and DESCALE lights.
Neither has a temperature setting, so neither is the answer to lukewarm coffee. That's usually scale; see K-Express not heating and K-Slim not heating.
FAQ
Does the K-Slim have a strong button?
No. The K-Slim's controls are power, brew and 8, 10 and 12 oz. The STRONG button is on the K-Express.
Can I use distilled water in a K-Slim?
No. The K-Slim Use & Care Guide says "Do not use distilled water." Use bottled or filtered water if your tap water tastes of chlorine or minerals.
How often does the K-Express need descaling?
Every 3 months, or when its Descale notification turns on. It also gives a maintenance alert after every 250 brews.
Why does my K-Express keep all its lights on after brewing?
That's normal. The K-Express shows a finished brew with all size buttons lit. The K-Slim is the opposite: its buttons go dark when brewing is done.
Is there a reset button on either?
No. Neither guide has a factory reset. The documented combinations are Descale Mode, High Altitude, STRONG mode (K-Express) and the partial-cup purge.
