Keurig K-Latte Not Heating? 3 Fixes for Lukewarm Lattes

What Heats on a K-Latte, and What the Guide Says

A Keurig K-Latte has two separate heaters: the brewer, which heats water for the coffee, and the milk frother, a jug on its own base with its own power button. Keurig's K-Latte guide prints no brew or milk temperature and has no "not hot" troubleshooting row. So for a lukewarm latte, work through what it does document: let the frother run its full cycle, give the brewer and frother their turns, descale the brewer, and give the machine its own outlet.

There's no heating reset, temperature setting or thermostat calibration on the K-Latte. This page follows Keurig's K-Latte Use & Care Guide.

Try This First

• Which part is cool, the coffee or the milk? They heat separately, so the fix is different.
• Frother: did the button flash and then go off? That's when frothing is finished (about 3 minutes).
• Brewer: the first heat-up takes about 4 minutes, and about a minute between brews. With Smart Start it heats, then brews automatically.
• When did you last descale? Keurig says every 3-6 months.

Fix 1: Let the Frother Finish Its Cycle

1. Pour chilled milk to the MAX line. Keurig says don't underfill or overfill, and don't run it without milk.
2. Put the whisk in, fit the lid and set the jug on its base.
3. Press the frother's power button. It stays lit while it heats.
4. Wait until the button flashes and then turns off (about 3 minutes) before you lift the jug.
5. Button won't light at all? If the brewer has just brewed, wait 30 seconds after it finishes and press again. Keurig says to call Customer Service if it still won't start.

If the milk heats but won't froth, Keurig's guide says to call Customer Service.

Fix 2: Descale the Brewer

Keurig says scale "can hinder brewer performance", and that regular descaling "helps maintain the heating element, and other internal parts that come in contact with water". There's no descale light, so do it every 3-6 months. Allow about 45 minutes.

1. Large ceramic mug, no pod. Empty the reservoir and take out any water filter.
2. Power off. Add the whole bottle of Keurig Descaling Solution plus a bottle of water. Power on.
3. Brew the largest size (10 oz) over and over until ADD WATER lights.
4. Leave it on for at least 30 minutes. Empty and rinse the reservoir.
5. Fill with fresh water and run at least 12 rinsing brews at the largest size, refilling at least once.

Heavily scaled? Little or no output followed by air: turn it off, unplug it, rinse and refill the reservoir and repeat the rinses. If it continues, leave it unplugged 30 minutes.

Keurig's descaling steps run through the brewer's reservoir only. The frother isn't part of them: wash it by hand after each use.

Fix 3: Give It Its Own Outlet

Keurig's power troubleshooting says an overloaded circuit can stop the brewer working properly and that it "should be operated on its own circuit, separate from other appliances".

1. Unplug it from any shared power strip.
2. Plug it into its own grounded wall outlet.
3. Run the brewer and the frother one at a time, as Keurig's guide describes, and compare.

When DIY Won't Work

• Coffee still lukewarm after a descale and its own outlet, or milk that heats but won't froth: call Keurig at 1-866-901-BREW (2739). The guide gives no further owner step.
• Not user serviceable beyond cleaning and maintenance.
• Warranty: limited one year (US and Canada). Damage to the frother from dishwasher cleaning isn't covered.

Prevention

• Wash the frother right after each use, by hand, with a soft cloth inside.
• Descale the brewer every 3-6 months.
• Use bottled or filtered water if your tap water tastes of minerals, but not distilled water.
• Store it frost-free and upright. After freezing temperatures, let it warm up for at least 2 hours.

FAQ

What temperature does the K-Latte frother heat milk to?

Keurig's guide doesn't say. It gives the time (about 3 minutes) and the signal that it's done: the button flashes, then turns off.

Can I heat milk and brew coffee at the same time on a K-Latte?

Not always. Keurig says you may not be able to use both at once. Wait 30 seconds after one finishes before starting the other.

Does descaling help the frother?

Keurig's descaling procedure doesn't involve the frother. It runs through the brewer's reservoir only. The frother is cleaned by hand after every use.

Is there a way to make K-Latte coffee hotter?
