Cuisinart won't brew? There's no reset and no power switch, only Brew/Off. The booklets point to Grind & Brew interlocks, a backed-up basket, Auto On and calcium.

Why a Cuisinart Won't Brew

When a Cuisinart drip coffeemaker won't brew, the cause is usually a program setting, a Grind & Brew interlock, or a basket that isn't draining. The DCC-3200 PerfecTemp booklet has no troubleshooting section and describes no reset, no pump test and no thermal fuse. Its "60-Second Reset" is a memory backup, not a button to press.

Quick Checks (2 Minutes)

  • Plugged in fully. The polarized plug fits one way; if it won't go in, reverse it. If it still won't fit, the booklet says to call an electrician, and never to modify the plug.
  • Water in the reservoir, poured in using the water level window at the side.
  • Carafe on the heating plate and the lid closed.

Fix 1: Start It With the Brew/Off Button (Works About 30% of the Time)

The DCC-3200 has no separate power switch. The Brew/Off button "turns coffeemaker on and off", and you press it to start brewing.

  • 12:00 flashing after plugging in means the clock is in Clock Set mode for 10 seconds. Set the clock or let the flashing stop, then press Brew/Off.
  • After a power cut: the 60-Second Reset keeps your settings through an outage of up to a minute. Longer, and the clock returns to a flashing 12:00.
  • DCC-1200 Brew Central: turn the Function Knob to Brew, then lift and release the Flip Switch.

If there are no lights at all, see our Cuisinart won't turn on guide.

Fix 2: Grind & Brew: Clear the Interlock (Works About 25% of the Time)

The DGB-900BC won't operate and beeps continuously until every part is in place. The booklet's causes:

  1. Hopper not locked in place (when using whole beans)
  2. Filter basket door not closed. It clicks when shut.
  3. Filter basket or basket cover not in place
  4. Used grounds not emptied from the basket
  5. Coffee chute clogged. Remove the hopper, lift the coffee channel cover, clean out the chute, then refit both.

After fixing the cause, press On/Off or Program again to resume. Restarting "will not affect coffee results". For pre-ground coffee, press Grind Off first. Our Grind & Brew guide covers the grinder itself.

Time: 5-10 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 25%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 3: A Basket That Isn't Draining (Works About 20% of the Time)

The Operating Notice lists what makes water and coffee back up in the filter basket: coffee ground too finely, two or more paper filters, the gold-tone filter with a paper filter, a gold-tone filter not cleaned of grounds, or grounds spilled over the filter.

Never open the basket during brewing, even if nothing is draining, as scalding water can spill out. Unplug the unit and wait 10 minutes before opening and checking it. Then use one #4 paper filter, fully open, or the gold-tone filter alone. Our overflowing guide has the amounts.

Time: 15 minutes, including the wait
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 20%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 4: Auto On Didn't Brew: Re-Arm the Program (Works About 15% of the Time)

  • DCC-3200: hold Prog/Auto On for 2 seconds to set the start time, which can be up to 24 hours ahead. The light comes on when it's armed. Pressing the lit button turns Auto On off, which is an easy mistake.
  • DCC-1200: set the knob to Prog, then Auto On, and lift and release the Flip Switch (green light). To brew at the same time another day, lift and release the Flip Switch again.
  • DGB-900BC: hold Program until it flashes, set the time, and press Program (green Auto-On light). For the next day, press Program once more.

Our timer guide covers the clock and programs in more detail.

Time: 2 minutes
Cost: Free
Success Rate: About 15%
Difficulty: Easy

Fix 5: Decalcify When CLEAN Is Lit (Works About 10% of the Time)

Calcium build-up "can affect the functioning of your coffeemaker," the DCC-3200 booklet says. When the red CLEAN indicator is on:

  1. Remove the charcoal water filter.
  2. Fill the reservoir with 1/3 white vinegar, 2/3 water.
  3. Hold CLEAN until it flashes. It beeps 5 times and shuts off when done.
  4. Repeat if CLEAN lights again, then run one full reservoir of fresh water.

Time: About 1 hour
Cost: White vinegar
Success Rate: About 10%
Difficulty: Easy

When to Call Cuisinart

If it still won't brew, the booklets offer nothing further for the owner. The base panel warning says: "No user-serviceable parts are inside. Repairs should be done only by authorized personnel." The DCC-3200 has a limited three-year warranty that includes mechanical and electrical defects. Don't return it to the store. Call 1-800-726-0190 (U.S.) or 1-800-472-7606 (Cuisinart Canada).

Prevent Brewing Problems

  • Decalcify whenever CLEAN lights up.
  • Empty and wash the basket after each pot.
  • Clean the Grind & Brew hopper and chute every 1-2 weeks.
  • Never add water with the basket or hopper removed.

FAQ

Why won't my Cuisinart coffee maker start brewing?

Press Brew/Off, which is also the on switch on the DCC-3200. Check there's water and the carafe is on the plate. On a Grind & Brew, continuous beeping means a part isn't in place.

Does a Cuisinart coffee maker have a reset button?

No. The "60-Second Reset" only holds your settings through a short outage. The booklets describe no reset procedure.

Why does my Cuisinart Grind & Brew beep and not brew?

The hopper, filter door, basket or cover isn't in place, old grounds are still in the basket, or the coffee chute is clogged. Fix it, then press On/Off or Program.

Why didn't my Cuisinart brew at the programmed time?

Auto On wasn't armed. On the DCC-3200 the Auto On light must be on, and pressing the lit button turns it off.

Does a Cuisinart have a thermal fuse that resets?

None of the booklets we read mentions a thermal fuse or cut-out. If it has no power at all, check the outlet and plug, then call Cuisinart.
