Breville Bambino Not Heating? 4 Fixes for Cold Espresso (BES450)

Cold Shots From a Machine That Heats in 3 Seconds

The Breville Bambino (BES450) uses a ThermoJet heater that Breville says reaches extraction temperature in 3 seconds, with PID control. So a lukewarm shot rarely means the heater is slow. The book's own row for "coffee not hot enough" starts with the parts the water meets after it's heated: a cold portafilter and a cold cup. Scale comes next.

The BES450 has no screen, no temperature setting and no power switch, so there's nothing to turn up. That leaves four things to fix: pre-heating, the group-head purge, descaling and the thermal cut-out. All four come from the BES450 Instruction Book.

Try This First

• Check the tank. If the lights flash 6 times in 3 seconds, the machine detects no water. The tank must be pressed down, "properly attached and sitting flush against the back of the machine".
• Is the 2 CUP button flashing continuously? That's the Bambino's descale alert. Go to Fix 3.
• Wake it up. The Bambino drops into standby after 10 minutes idle. A shot pulled straight after waking it is the one most likely to run cool.
• Taste hot water. Press HOT WATER into a cup. Breville gives the cup temperature as 194°F (90°C). If that's hot and the espresso isn't, the problem is pre-heating, not the heater.

Fix 1: Pre-Heat the Portafilter and the Cup

A 54 mm aluminum portafilter and a cold ceramic cup take heat straight out of a small shot. Breville's troubleshooting row for "coffee not hot enough" names exactly these two: portafilter not pre-heated, and the cup.

1. Lock the empty portafilter into the group head while the machine is ready.
2. Run hot water through it. Breville's remedy is to rinse the portafilter under hot water.
3. Remove it and dry it thoroughly. Water left in the basket ruins the puck.
4. Run hot water through your cup to preheat it. Use the HOT WATER button, which delivers through the steam wand.
5. Dose, tamp and pull the shot straight away.

Fix 2: Purge the Group Head Before Each Shot

The book tells you to purge the group head with 1 CUP or 2 CUP before inserting the portafilter. In the Barista Pro book, from the same ThermoJet family, Breville spells out why: it "will stabilize the temperature prior to extraction and preheat the portafilter".

1. With the portafilter out, press 1 CUP and let a short flow of water run from the group head.
2. Press 1 CUP again to stop it.
3. Insert the dosed portafilter and pull the shot.

Do this every time, not only for the first shot.

Fix 3: Clean & Descale When the 2 CUP Button Flashes

Breville says hard-water scale reduces "the brewing flow, brewing temperature, power of the machine, and the taste of the espresso". The Bambino tells you when it's due: the 2 CUP button flashes continuously. Any button cancels the alert, but Breville says not to ignore it.

1. Empty the drip tray and put it back in. "Before descaling, ensure drip tray is inserted."
2. Fill the tank to the DESCALE line and add the descaling agent. Breville supplies descaling powder in the box.
3. Put a container of at least 68 fl oz (2 L) under the group head and steam wand.
4. Press 2 CUP + STEAM together for 5 seconds to start. 2 CUP flashes throughout.
5. When the solution is used up, it pauses. Rinse the tank, refill it to MAX, and empty the container.
6. Press 2 CUP to run the rinse. The machine returns to ready mode.
7. Empty, rinse and dry the drip tray and container.

⚠️ Safety: Breville warns that hot steam may be released during descaling.

Fix 4: Let the Thermal Cut-Out Reset

If the Bambino is on but stops working, the book's cause is the safety thermal cut-out, triggered by the pump overheating. It isn't a heater fault, and it resets by cooling.

1. Turn the machine off by pressing 1 CUP + HOT WATER together for 0.5 seconds.
2. Unplug it.
3. Let it cool for 30-60 minutes.
4. Plug it back in, refill the tank, and press 1 CUP to run water through before your next shot.

When DIY Won't Work

Stop using it and unplug it if you smell burning, see smoke, the breaker trips, or it cuts out again and again.

The book describes no owner test or repair for the ThermoJet, its sensors or the PID, and no owner-serviceable screen or fuse. If hot water from the wand is cold too, or the machine keeps cutting out after cooling, contact Breville. The warranty length isn't printed in the book. It points you to breville.com or the Breville Service Center, so check before anyone opens the housing.

• Purge the group head before every shot (Fix 2).
• Pre-heat the portafilter and cup every time (Fix 1).
• Descale when 2 CUP flashes. Don't keep cancelling it.
• Use fresh water and keep the tank pressed fully home.
• Don't run steam and shots back to back for long stretches. The thermal cut-out protects the pump.

Can I change the brew temperature on a Breville Bambino?
